Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

There is a 4wd Sumo ambulance coming up for auction at Avadi. PM me if you want the number of Mr Srinivasan, a regular buyer at army auctions.

Any shorter than 2400mm will mean that all the dimensions of the vehicles will also have to Reduce.

What can be done is 2500 mm WB, but better GC.
2400mm = ~94 inch = Wheel Base of MM540/550, Thar . I guess Sumo Wheel Base is same?

Sumo wheelbase currently stands at 2425 MM which is marginally more than the original figure of 2400 MM.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Hardly makes a difference to highspeed stability ..

I have seen both numbers being given. IIRC, my Sumo was @ 2400mm

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Is BD really working on anything close to Thar at TM? Has anyone confirmed?

Compared to the Thar, he already has a HT, AC, PS and 4WD in the SUMO and all he is doing is making it shorter from a LWB to SWB.
He doesn't need to change any Wheelbase, its already short enough and already has the right diff.

BD will not be able to change the dimensions, he can only make it visually more appealing and have and replace electrical the mechanical one from Thar.
Will BD be able to change anything?!

From what I hear there is some development going on, but I don't think it will be easy for him.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Yes, but there was an attempt to project 4972 as the big Daddy of all Sumo's in the works, much in line with one Super "521"-Thar that never saw the light of day, and is now reported to be "diluted".

Then we saw subsequent posts!

Lets see what churns up. Infact nothing needs to, just the Army Sumo with 3.0 Dicor engine will rock.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

I saw this Sumo 4x4 (original version) chugging along the highway in Punjab, going to Chandigarh.

It was driven by either CRPF/BSF/ITBP personal, couldn't make out from their uniforms.

BD Sir's Tata baby - Sumo Extreme:

This has a 4-wheel drive system on it and looks amazing with those body claddings and super wide off-road tyres.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Looks like just a customized Sumo. Hope there is more under the body than we see in the pic.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Sumo Extreme looks really good.
Why don't Tata Motors launch it in the 8L range, with the hard top and 4WD, it will get a lot of attention from potential Thar Buyers.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

I hope Tata Motors does more than adding 31x11x15 Mudzilla tyres, cheap aftermarket foglights on top, roof rail and minor cosmetic touch-ups. Would have loved to see a Sumo 4x4 customized as a expedition vehicle, with roof tent, winch, offroad bumpers (front and rear), expedition accessories etc.....
Still long way to go !

One of the main attractions for the buyer considering the Thar is the open top / soft top experience which the Sumo cannot offer. I had been to Goa recently and spotted a number of Thars used open top by the tourists.

If the Sumo is indeed launched with a hard top and a 4WD it will head the same way down as it happened with the new Gurkha models. For a 8 lakh budget, people will stick to the Ecosport and other compact SUVs that will be launched now. Plus the Sumo name and look is not what many private buyers will want to associate with.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

They had the sexiest Xenon body with them - why didn't Dhabhar sir try something with that instead of the Sumo?

Sumo also has a soft top version. Hope BD Sir is looking at that option too.
Trying to still imagine how an open top Sumo would look like.. Where the Roll over bar will be placed? How the seating would be?
It can be a very good off roader with its minimal overhangs both at front and back.
