Re: The most practical & best looking Hardtop - Mahindra Thar

I am planning to buy a Thar and get a HT. Have shortlisted the below HTs:

1. HHT (FRP from Hyderabad)
2. Metal HT (vin4x4 from Bengaluru)

Have come across many reviews for HHT but not many on the metal HT. I am aware that the HHT is a direct fit and does not require any welding. Does the metal HT requires welding to be done. Which one should I go for?

Please provide your feedback to decide on the above.

Meta, hard top needs welding and your vehicle will be there for much longer and if not done properly is prone to rusting. My advice would be to go for FRP hard top with either Prabu Hyderbad or from Rohan Rogeotech Coimbatore. There is also a factory option which has been installed by a fellow jeep.

In bangalore there seems to be problem with the metal hard top done by this person call Joy Putturan . Spartan I think the place is called. Some people are not able to get back their vehicles from him. If you are going for metal top, expect your Thar to be there for much longer and make sure that you are comfortable leaving it there and the person is dependable.

Thanks for your revert. I was referring to the below metal hardtop from Bangalore. But unable to find much reviews from team-bhp members.

Thanks a ton Blooming Flower. With your inputs I have finalized Bimbra and already in talks with them. Also your suggestion to check out with the local RTO makes sense. I know a friend who has people in RTO Guwahati, so will directly have a discussion with them before I take the step.
Now coming the suspension you said that Ironman is good for 4x4. However I do not intend to do much offroading and I am more inclined to a plusher ride on the highway. Not bouncy like the scorpio but more plush and planted than the stock springs.

Now coming to the mods, I note your point. Will not take a decision so soon. Don/t want to fiddle with the engine now.

Thanks once again bro for your inputs. I truly appreciate :-)

If the Hyderabad HT team has not created a facility in Calcutta or Guwahati already he will send a person there.

Suspension for a better ride too i.e. modified rear leaf spring set is provided by the same Hyderabad guys.
Thank you desertfox for your reply. You have a point. Driving the Thar for intial 3k to 5k kms is a good idea. Now why I intend to take my vehicle to Bimbra is because I have lots of other mods to be done. They can ship me the hardtop, however the interiors, spacers, suspensions etc can only be done in the workshop. Not sure of the local guys here how good they at these and hat is the quality of materials they will use. Hence I will have to take my car to Hyd or Ggn for sure. However your suggestion to drive the car for first 5k is noted and valid.

Have booked my Thar. Will be taking delivery next month. Has anyone installed Tembo hardtop from bluegarage. Please share your feedback on the same.

Drove down to Hyderabad & came back with short hard top fully sealed one. Also went in for the additional spring leaf, power windows & remote lock.

Re: The most practical & best looking Hardtop - Mahindra Thar

I bought a 2018 Thar CRDe the last day of 2018. I am thinking of putting a Bimbra fiberglass/plastic hardtop on it in a week or two.

Question: How do these tops hold up to India's relentless sun and ultraviolet over time? And how do they hold up in general? Hopefully I will get some answers from members who have a few years experience with their top.

Mine is just a week old as of now, I find the hardtop quite good, though cannot give long term review.

Re: The most practical & best looking Hardtop - Mahindra Thar

I went to Bimbra (Delhi, Gurgaon, Gurugram) last week and had them install one of their new fiberglass hardtops on my very new 2018 Thar CRDe. They offer 4 different tops. I chose their newest one which retains a flat boxy look, which I like, AND has a one piece rear swinging door. It took them 4 days to do and cost 72,224 rupees.

While there I picked up a front bumper and some Australian " Light Force" 170 watt auxilliary lights. The bumper was 5,700...the lights..were WAY expensive let's just say. I can put in a nice interior headliner and maybe a rear seat or two. Jury is still deliberating on that.

Below are some pics I took today upstairs on one of the hydroelectric service roads near Palampur. A little overcast and squally up there this day.

Plus side: All the advantages of a hardtop. Inside is quieter, much cleaner. Vision is better thru the clear glass. Fewer water leaks as opposed to a canvas top that would degrade quickly under the relentless sun and heavy H.P. monsoon.
Very little loss of headroom.

Minus side: A little expensive. Windows could be bigger.
