Re: Post pictures of your Bicycle on day trips here!

August goal of 400kms is done. I'm thinking in remaining days to clock 100 more kilometers and make it a nice 500. Post pictures of your Bicycle on day trips here!-20210822_164648.jpg

Re: Post pictures of your Bicycle on day trips here!

Went out for a sunday evening first time ride on my new MTB. Did a leisurely 30 kms, as it was my confidence building ride after a recent biking accident 6 months ago. Weather was beautiful and the route scenic.

That is a sweet looking bike you have there. Total drool-maal, and well done for a good distance for a morning ride.

Well done!. That sure is some great climbing.

I have a 11 speed, 11-28 cassette at present on my roadie, 50-34 front. Its ultegra. Would you know if it would be ok to swap it to a 11-30 or 11-32, 11 speed cassette without having to change the chain?.

Re: Post pictures of your Bicycle on day trips here!

The boredom of lockdown in New Zealand owing to the recent delta out break means no taking out the car or motorcycle unless its essential. It was Saturday evening. After my wife got back from work, I headed out. The plan was to cycle further but after about 35km, I was flat. My legs were just tired to push on any further. Light was going low and the temperature also started to drop below 10 degrees. I decided to call it quits at Manor park. Fortunately there is a train station so I could load my bike and head back home.

This is called the Hutt River Trail. The map can be seen here. You need to scroll down to 70% of that page to see the route map. My route was somewhat like this. I had to cycle a bit on the motorway to Petone and then veer off towards the cycle track which starts here.

It was a nice still (wind free) day and a good relaxing ride. Heading out on days like these refreshes the mind, especially after starring at a computer monitor for close to 50 hours a week!

Based on my understanding, its not only chain length, but the Rear Derailleur (short cage, long cage etc) also is a factor to consider for this decision.

And my assumption is that 11-28 to 11-30 maybe ok, but I am not sure about going for 11-32 (assume current RD is short). And chain needs to be longer as well.

Narayanang76 has already posted the right answer. It includes the RD cage length as well. Usually up to 32 teeth, short cage should be sufficient and anything beyond 32, medium or long cage will be required. With respect to chain, in case length is not sufficient, think we need to add some more links to it. Not sure of it though, experts can confirm.

Just to add my two bits, regardless of what Shimano claims in their literature, in the end you need to actually try it out to know of it works.

Per Shimano my short cage (SS) Claris 2400 rear derailleur can take a maximum of 32 teeth on the largest cog. Stock cassette by Cannondale was a 12-25.

But my 11-32 cassette is way too tight a shift on the stock derailleur. Even after adjusting the B screw.

So I use a hybrid/MTB long cage Alivio rear derailleur on my road bike. And it shifts like molten butter. Millions of owners of older road bikes do the same mix and match.

The newer Claris 2000 shod bikes come with a medium cage (GS) rear derailleur, which can actually take a 32 (though Shimano claims 34).

There is no long cage road series derailleur as far as I know.

Cheers, Doc

Late evening Old Highway catcher-upper. Guilt trip for waking up in the morning, and air, bottles, coffee and potty later, diving back into bed shutting off all the remaining alarms! Lol

Nice stress free, Z1-Z2 meditative ride it was. I liked it.

First time riding with my Dad (who is 67 year old retired academician) ! He took to cycling upon my insistence about a year back - brought himself a Firefox 7 speed and been riding 2-3 days a week. He has so far covered close to 1800 kms !

It was a special feeling since we never got to ride cycles / bikes together till this instance !

Climbers!!!

New Katraj Tunnel loop today. Met and rode with a couple of friends in the early part. Road is not as bad as I imagined on the Daripul and Menon's Hill descent (used to be a high speed 70-80 kmph 7 km bomb zone once upon a time). Another 60 km 610 meters of elevation loop.

It felt wonderful to be back on the bike after two weeks – not a long one, just around 44kms.
