Just for your info: Maxtor Basics 120GB will work with 6050UI. This is the cheapest HDD with enclosure (Factory assembled) I could find which will work with 6050. Otherwise I have tried 2 local cases with Hitachi HDD was not working with the HU

Here you go: eBay India: Seagate Maxtor 120 GB Mini USB External Hard Disk 120GB (item 310077409719 end time 21-Sep-2008 21:38:49 IST)

But note that here in Bangalore eZone you will get it for 2990 bugs. It comes with 3 years company Warranty. So better try in your local stores for a better price. In Nehru place Computer Empire will have this stuff in stock

Yes you can. I am using it for the last one month. I could carry 20GB of music in more than 300 folders.
As far as specifications concerned, you should look out for the rated current of HDD. it should be around 400mA, so including the case electronics it will come below 500mA(USB2.0 Spec ). But practically many drives with the above spec will not work with 6050, I suspect the IDE to USB converter consuming huge power and hence the total power required for the setup exceeds 500mA. I personally tried Hitachi , Toshiba and Samsung drives with different local 2.5" HDD casings(Advik and Supercomp). Both were giving a Error 22 , Error 11 or USB N/A on 6050.

So I believe its not only just the HDD, but the Electronics too will make a difference. I haven't tried any factory built HDD portable drives other than Maxtor Basics 120GB, as my first try itself with this setup as successful.

You will have to format the Maxtor Basics 120 with any HDD partition tools available on net to FAT32 before copying files. By default it is NTFS formatted from factory and will not work with your HU. Let me know in case anyone required some help in preparing the drive. Also its better (not mandatory)to run a defragment utility on the HDD after copying all files, especially if you copied more than one folder at the same time, this will make a difference. This will help the HU to find out files faster and lesser seek time.

This would be beautiful with a Parrot Rk8200. Keed the HDD in the cave/pocket and forget about it.

btw anyone know if the new SSD (solid state (?)) hard drives work with HUs? I would guess they need less power.

since the same thing is available for about the same price locally, it would be easier, and you don't have to bother, especially with the customs etc, and buying it locally would be easier.
If you want to buy another HU, lets not go off topic here. there may be existing threads, or start a new thread for your requirements

Nothing special

There's nothing special about clarion drives as far as playback is concerned (the name Clarion gives a rosy picture doesn't it?). Me and my brother (who is a pretty good auditioner) have listened to quite a few HU's, and feel that quality wise Eclipse>Alpine>Kenwood=pioneer=clarion>Sony. Of course clarion has some innovative products like the DMR's (Digital media receivers), which are only solid state memory based (Less maintenance- no moving parts), and also look neat , but SQ is not as great as the eclipse. If you are looking at those 3 pioneer HUs mentioned on the thread then 6050 is it.
