This was something I was very much surprised to see. Clicked on 18/7/2013 near Lucky Hotel on SV Road, Mumbai.

Re: Indian Taxi Pictures

Pictures of taxis clicked in Meghalaya state. The Maruti 800 is quite popular as a taxi. Even new ones are bought for private use, mainly due to the narrow steep and hilly gradients here. parking space is also at a premium here so the choice is the 800.
The Tata Nano is also seen to be quite a part of the taxi trade but very few are seen.
Three wheelers are a no-no in Shillong and the adjacent hilly towns and villages. But when we reach the plains we find the three wheelers too ! This will be evident from the last picture clicked beyond Nongpoh, towards Guwahati (on Shillong- Guwahati National Highway) where autorickshaws are also seen.

Re: Indian Taxi Pictures

The Ambassador Encore (a taxi) clicked in Kolkata. The Encore ( for our members who missed its pictures earlier) is the new BS IV version of the older BMC 1500 cc diesel engine (1489 cc) that HM launched in Sept 2013.

Its now the only product from HM that is bought by the taxi owners in Kolkata. The production picked up by Nov - Dec 2013 and quite a few white Encores can now be spotted in Kolkata.

But there is trouble in paradise. The Suzuki Swift Tour is also selling well as white "No Refusal" taxis in Kolkata and these offer a formidable competition to the mighty Ambassador.

Earlier some taxi owners tried the Indigo CS, but that has not taken off quite well. The Swift TOUR is now seriously competing.

"No Refusal" taxis in Kolkata are those that have been sold with a concessional state excise duty (a relief of about Rs 50,000) to taxi owners. Once they buy with such a concession, they have to paint "No Refusal" with a horizontal stripe in blue and the taxi is white. That means they cannot refuse any passengers for their desired trips. Defaulters may be reported by passengers on the Kolkata police FB page or one can dial the no. 1079 to alert the police and register a complaint.

Trouble in paradise- the Swift Tour has come in the Ambassador's bastion with a bang. Many can be sighted these days.
In fact, the taxi market of Kolkata was the last bastion for the once mighty Ambassador.

Do I see a windscreen mounted GPS holder in the Amby Encore?

I too think it is a MapmyIndia GPS. You can sight one on the dash of the car below too !

Meanwhile more pictures of Encores. One moving on the street in the first photo and many pictures of the other brand new one clicked on 25/07/2014. It could be among the last ones to roll out of Uttarpara prior to 24/05/2014 the closure date of the HM's plant in West Bengal.

Re: Indian Taxi Pictures

Ambassador taxis still rule the Kolkata streets, but the entry of the Swift Tour and to some extent the Indigo CS will surely change the face of the Kolkata taxi trade, given the fact that HM stopped production at Uttarpara on 24/05/2014 coupled with the fact that each taxi has to be scrapped after it completes 15 years from the date of registration.

Re: Indian Taxi Pictures

Saw this Premier Padmini Taxi, but with private car plates, at Thammanam, Kochi recently.
Kerala presently do not have any Black and Yellow Taxis as the "uniform " is not mandatory now.

PP taxis were not common in Kerala except in Kollam, which had some in the 70s.

Re: Indian Taxi Pictures

Great thread!

Which car do you think would get the title of the most suitable taxi in India?
For intra city use, I think the Datsun Go+ fitted with a CnG will make the cut. It is spacious, basic and frugal (despite being unsafe).

I have another question- who decides which car can be used as a Taxi? If it is the Government, there will be a vested interest- manufacturers can influence government decisions.
