Re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

This is the perfect second car for any household which has something bigger and needs a car for city duties. Or for people who rarely drive out of the city and don't need the long range regardless of fuel type.

For most EVs, small range was a handicap because they were competing with much bigger cars in pricing.

BUT, Tiago EV XT Medium range is priced almost at par with Swift ZXI AMT. Slightly more than i10 Nios Sportz AMT. All 3 are supposed to be good city cars. All of them have almost the same target audience. If you have heavy highway usage in mind, you will be better served with something with a larger size / boot so none of the 3 are well suited. The only difference here is the operating costs of the Tiago EV will be at least 1/7th of the other 2. It also addresses the only chink in Tiago's armour, its comparatively noisier petrol powertrain.

Tata is gunning for the numero uno position here and they have an ace up their sleeve. They can wipe the floor with the cheap small CNG cars like the Swift, Celerio, WagonR, i10 Nios with just this 1 car. Watch out Hyundai and MSIL.

Dear TaMo, Please bring on the Atroz/Punch EVs like yesterday!

As the price of a car goes down, the cost of operations becomes more important because the running costs don't go down dramatically when you go from a 20L car to a 10L car. So I do think for heavy city users, this is a great car especially if you live in a state without road tax for EVs.

I don't think it is a good thing if car companies start rushing for EVs at 6L by cutting corners. It will sour the whole EV adoption movement.

Tata's success with this car will hopefully create economies of scale and force other companies like Maruti to join the race as well which should further reduce costs.

Already Tigor EV looks over priced, there is ~2.2 to 2.7 Lakhs (depending on whether you compare Tigor XZ to Tiago XZ+LR LUX or XZ_LR) and you pretty much get only bigger boot (~76 litres + spare wheel or ~176 litres without the spare wheel). Okay Torque is higher in Tigor EV, but with the stock tyres all it gets you is wheel spin.

By comparison the price difference between petrol Tiago XZ+ and Tigor XZ+ is only 77K. Even in percentage terms it is ~11% between the petrols vs ~22% between the EVs.

Between Tigor and Tiago, the EV premium has narrowed from ~5 Lakhs to ~3 Lakhs, even in percentage terms its down from ~53% to ~35%. Hope this trend continues for EVs.

  • To keep safety margin for the socket
  • To keep safety margin for the wire leading to the socket. The wire might be old, or undersized, or of inferior quality, etc.

With their own 3.3kW charger, they have control over the above parameters and hence allow the full 15A current.

That's my assumption.
That could be a possible reason. However, if a proper sized wire is used for a 15A plug then it should not be a problem. For example, in my home, we have ensured that 15 Sockets have 4sqmm wire which can carry upto 20A easily.

So, for a 3.3 KWh charger, the proper sized wires(4 sqmm) have to be drawn from the meter. I for one would tap from existing 15A socket for the 3.3 KWh charger since I know that wire is of the required thickness and not from the meter box.

Great pricing & specifications from Tata! Nobody was expecting this.
Charging time with 15A socket as well looks quite satisfactory. One would want to avoid fast charging to prolong the battery life.

Looks like a very well packaged product and the price really hits the spot. Tata will do big volumes with this one.

On the flip side, Tata's already inadequate EV after sales services are only bound to get worse. As others have mentioned, might be time to spin off the EV arm to a Maruti Nexa style channel.

And if that's the case, there should be an option to skip the 3.3kW charger altogether.

In fact, even if the 15A charging takes a little longer, many people won't mind at all. For people like me looking at this as secondary city car, it may take an entire week to use the full range. Moreover, the car almost certainly remains parked for 12 hours every night. These ensure that a quicker charging at home is never required.

If you can call the 4 wheeled Citroën Ami EV a car of sorts, then that one is launching tomorrow. Expected to be in this price range.

And the Tiago brochure here.

Re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

A well-planned launch at the right price. The introductory price for 10k units must be available for at least a year ( today Tiago sells ~5k units).

With 2 battery options and great features list this will surly pull big numbers from i10, Alto, Celario, and swift. The running cost of 1rs/km and ride experience of an EV ( no engine vibration, noise, and instant power) make it a perfect City car. And the experience of Tata with EVs can be helpful in terms of groups and forums.

The real-world range can be ~200 (24/120KWH/km) for the long-range version (24kw) and ~160(19/120KWH/km) for the short-range version. This will have better KWH/km due to less weight and non-SUV type compared to NexonEV.

Re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

This is what was needed to bring more people into EV space. There are many customers who want a car just for city needs and a weekly run of barely 100-150 kms. This can be the de-facto choice for such customers.

Tiago EV can also help TATA to breach the monthly 50k dispatches comfortably thus becoming number 2 in Indian car market.

Re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

Great effort from Tata's, though the headline is misleading: Rs.8.49 L comes with a smaller 19.2 kWh battery pack and has lesser 250 kms range as compared to the top of the line that costs Rs 11.79L and comes with the 24 kWh battery pack that gives a range of 315 kms.
