Re: The DSLR Thread

Repeating the question in the DSLR thread.
D90 or D3100 or Canon???
I'm confused big time. I have been wanting to buy the D90 for a while now and was about to buy when my friend pushed in some of his words thus leaving me perplexed

he says d90 is 3yrs old and makes no sense buying and old model. He suggested to pick D7000, but thats way off budget for me.

I have somehow not liked D3100 for it has no AF motor, but its cheaper and I can invest on some lens.

Never been a fan of Canon, but 60D looks impressive.

Any suggestions welcome

Forget the D3100 or D5000 and D7000(as its out of your budget!!) go with the D90. Older model but still a fantastic one!

Canon 60D is in the same category as the D90 i.e. Mid-Range DSLRs. Being a newer model, it may offer better features than the D90.

For decision, weigh in both the advantages and disadvantages of Canon & Nikon w.r.t what you are looking and decide the brand. Its a very simple process. The max it would take is 5 hours on the internet!

Did you ask him why?
I never got this : it is old model, hence do not buy mentality.

Are we in Kindergarten that everything we buy is just to show other kids and make them envious?

D90 can whack the daylights out of D3100 any day. Especially with more available lenses.
D7000 is not a direct replacement for D90, rather it has subtle enhancements. Hence, the humongous price.

You may of course look at Canon 60d also, priced in similar range.

But frankly - if you are in such a situation, why do you want to spend so high on the camera?
Better get a cheaper body and plug on expensive lenses on it. Unless you wish to start with high speed action photography

If you are a first time user of a SLR ( dont think so.. however ) , or are on a strict budget then the D3100 is a perfect buy.

If you are big time into DSLR photography ( live, eat breathe types.. ) then by all means invest in the D90, which is definitely a good buy. Other than the higher Mpixels / sensor the D3100 does not have any apparent advantage over the D90, inspite of being a newer model.

I bought a D3100 simply because I am an occassional photographer, have used a SLR, so know its advantages, and want some of the SLR features when i shoot.

For the price ( plus a few $$) more, of a D90kit I got a D3100 kit and a 50-300 zoom during the black friday sale in the US.

A canon would definitely have a better sensor/ higher mpixel than the nikon in the same price range.. from what i could find out during my research...

I beg to differ. The D7000 has features that can rival even the canon 7D. Has better AF compared to the D90, newer technology which includes the sensor, processor, active D lighting, support for next generation SDXC cards, dual card slots (available only in D300S and 1d and pro series cameras), 6fps, better bugger, better ISO upto 25600, shooting 1080 video for full 20 minutes with full time AF, 1/8000 second shutter speed which lets you shoot those action or sports and more.

D90 is definitely a great camera but an old generation. If you can extend your budge my pick would the D7000 or the Canon 60D.

Used 7d's and D300S cost the same as the new D7000. Thats where i see a better value in getting an used D300S if you can spend for D7000.

Canon has better VFM with 60D, 18-55 IS and the 55-250 IS lenses. This package is fantastic for most of the needs.

Hope i added some more confusion

Re: The DSLR Thread

Thanks guys..
Alpha1, He meant old in the sense, there are better sensors, processors in the newer cameras compared to D90.
I'm no that Pro level nor do I dream and sleep SLRs. just a humble hobbyist photographer. I love to go on photo walks and meet ups with fellow photographers.
The Canon 60D i had checked with 18-105mm lens is priced $1200.
Personally i liked the D7000, but budget

Do you suggest I can pick a used D90 or a D7000?

Re: The DSLR Thread

My new Fujifilm HS10 will be in my hands early next week. I was looking for the HS20 EXR, but its release date is still uncertain and might as well go into April or later.

Somehow CAnon 550/600D seems to be a better budgeted choice for you.
Nikon d5000 would've been good also, but you are not considering it.

Of course there are no probs with D3100 also.

I believe because its a hobby thingie - firm up your budget first!
Make and model will automatically line up ...

I repeat again. Why would you go for an used D90.

I have some forums that does very credible used body sales. PM me if you want those details.

US is a fantastic market for used items and i would recommend you to pick an used D300S and some good lenses. If you feel you are not making use of it, you can sell it in the same forum hardly losing any money.

Go for an Used D300s. PM me for the site.

Never been a fan of Canon,
Well your question is flawed you are asking D90 or D3100 or Canon I see follwoing problems with this.
1. Canon does not make one single Camera it has a very wide range consisting of 1000D,500D,550D,60D,7D,5D MK2 etc so what exactly you are looking.

2. D90 and D3100 : two cameras from two different segments. If you are willing to spend on D90 there can be better choices ( in Canon ) but D90 is best choice in Nikon.
Comparing these two D3100 lacks following
1. AF motor :So you can not use cheaper prime lenses of Nikon and cheapest Nikon prime with AF motor is around 16K.
2. Commander mode flash : D90 has this , You can use your Camera popup flash to control the off-camera iTTL flash , In Canon 60D has this feature.
3. Lack of IR remote on D3100 , Comes handy in various situations.

If you are considering D3100 then in same budget Canon 500D is much better choice.

I am inclined to go for a 50mm f1.4 or 1.8 and/or a 70-300 f3.5-5.6.

I have been using a 12x superzoom (Canon S3IS) for a while and would find it difficult to live without decent zoom.
Ok guys here's the update: Once in the camera store, I lost my head and the heart ruled. I walked home with a D7000 kit with an additional 35mm prime (f1.8G) thrown in. And two fast memory cards to fit in the twin slots of the beast.

Now the task ahead is to do proper justice to this huge investment

Good buy. I repeat again, the D7000 can rival even the 7D for features. Enjoy the new camera.

Take more pictures. I took close to 20000 pictures in my first 20D in less than 6 months before buying my first 5D.

Congratulations!! Thats one heck of a buy!!! And the decision to buy the 35mm prime is equally laudable(also because I suggested it ). On a serious note the 35mm lens being a Normal lens on the cropped body, you will understand what lens you need to buy in future. Also it being a fast lens, and the Nikons in general are good low light performers, you can get lovely pics in the parties you attend and that too with out the need of a flash!!!

BTW, if you manual lenses in the back of your mind, then D7000 is a fantastic investment!! My heart says, D7000 will be retaining its value better than D90!!
