No, apparently not. I spoke to her about this and she did investigate but found, essentially there is nothing she could do. In this particular case, the person in question is a well known Dutch writer and she now has fans and lunatics showing up at her doorstep at regular interval.

I checked a few more names, and it is really amazing who shows up. I checked a few and none of these individuals were aware or had asked Google. I mean I can understand if you're running a company you want it to show up on Google map, maybe you would be willing to pay a little.

Folks,

I had purchased the top end MMI device from Danew with a 5 " screen, Bluetooth and reverse camera for Rs. 17,000 two years back. Last month the touch screen got damaged and the cost to repair it is Rs. 7,000. My questions are:

1) Should I spend the money to repair this device or continue using Google Maps on my smart phone ? Assuming each time I go on a trip, I will spend couple of hundred rupees for data charges for using Google maps, Google maps still works out to be cheaper than spending Rs. 7k in addition to what I already spent for the MMI device.

2) Smaller screens from Garmin or Tomtom without Bluetooth and reverse are available for around Rs. 9k. In case, I decide to go for a GPS unit, should I then buy a new Garmin or Tomtom without bluetooth and reverse camera for Rs. 9k instead of spending Rs. 7k to repair the MMI device ?

Please advice.

Sygic is free now - and it uses MMI maps. Download the app and the states you are most likely to visit. No restriction on how many you can download - if you wish you can have whole India. These are offline maps, so you don't need a active data connection.

Some more free offline map solutions - OSMAnd, NavFree - both of these use openstreetaps.

While in your home city, you can still use Gmaps with data, on outstation trips any of the above 3 will be good.

I personally feel, Smart phone / tablets are way forward and maps like MMI are thing in past. Dont waste your money on repairing.
My experience with Nokia Drive/ Here Drive been exceptionally good.

Unless you are the kind who can devote time to updating your maps, and taking care of a seperate device, I suggest sticking to your smartphone. Either way, maps can never be blindly followed at all times and always require a certain amount of alertness and common sense. Google maps has come a long way and while it still might be a little behind MMI or other services, they do not justify their lead over using google maps and the conveniences of having it on your phone that is an integral part of your life

I have now seen two instances where they do not tell the shortest and best possible route.

And instance 2 is my Amritsar-Manali route query, which it showed me three routes except the most obvious one.

So is it time to hunt for a more reliable alternative?

Routes aside, it has let me down a few times with regards to places/establishments also. For eg. the last time I had to visit a Titan showroom, there was no such showroom where it was marked. And from the look of it, and from my memory, there never was one, anywhere in that area. Waste of time and trip.

I'v learnt not to trust Google maps much. But is there a better alternative?

I have had a strange experience. I was using google maps to locate a colleague's house from where I new the route to a place that i was heading to. Once reaching the colleague's house i observe the navigation in google maps suggesting me a wrong direction. The worst part is that it was suggesting the exact opposite direction in which i had to travel. I doubt if it was just a bug!!!

I was off to a meeting in Mahalaxmi yesterday and going to the place after a long time, all the directions by Maps were pointing wrongly.

Not only that, for the sake of a check, I decided to do a random check of office to home. There also, there was a deviation which was pretty sad!!

Friends, crap happens but no point being worked up. Other alternatives just don't have as much information at all. It may be a bit crappy but its far better than others!

You can always do a quick google to confirm the address, and then put the address in.

Infact GMaps also returns the phone number of POIs such as showrooms so u can call them before you start. MMI etc just don't have that kinda stuff - e.g bakeries etc.
