How Fast Is Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) connection?-speed.jpg

30 MBPS as advertised by Virgin :D:D

Mods: I did a quick search on the forum without getting a relevant thread. Searching for "broadband" in "gadgets computers and softwae" led to three threads that have a single post in 2012 and later and none are relevant. Still If I missed something please do merge it.

Everyone - I have been facing a problem which I believe is by no means unique. My 2yr old is fond of youtube and the FUP limits are exhausted within first two weeks if I personally don't use the broadband much. If I use it as well, it takes less than a week.

This also means no Streaming services to watch movies (I'm talking about non-pirated paid services).

My plan has been a very old Airtel plan (pre-FUP days) that used to be 1Mbps, and they upgraded it to 2Mbps with a FUP of 30GB (once FUP is crossed it reverts to 1Mbps)

I need something that gives me minimum 2Mbps without bothering about FUP, preferably at least 3Mbps (so that there is some margin) and then whatever FUP-related peak speed I get, I get.

the problem: Both Beam and Airtel in Hyderabad have rather ungenerous FUP limits on their reasonable-speed plans (>50GB costs over Rs.2k/month).

I ran across Reliance with some new thunder plans, and those do have pretty high FUP (they claim unlimited) BUT - I have no clue whether the it is truly unlimited and also am not sure about quality of their service.

In over 7 years of Airtel usage I personally haven't had any headaches and nor do I know anyone personally (a few rants on internet notwithstanding) who had problems with Airtel. For Beam service used to be pathetic when they started, I haven't had any contact with recent customers.

Reliance is another ballgame altogether - my concerns are (1) quality or service and whether it is really unlimited as they claim (2) their max. offered bandwidth is 4Mbps. Airtel offers 16Mbps, Beam as much as 25 in Hyderabad. Also Beam's post-FUP claimed banwidth is pretty high (as much as Reliance's non-FUP)

While I don't see a problem even with 4Mbps in normal course, I do download software via internet from time to time, and I was thinking why not take something fast right now.

So here are my options (all prices exclusive of taxes):

(1) Airtel 16Mbps @ 1399/month - FUP 50GB, post-FUP 512kbps
(2) Airtel 8Mbps @ 2099/month - FUP 80GB post-FUP 512kbps
(3) Airtel 8Mbps @ 2599/month - FUP 175GB post-FUP 512kbps
(4) Beam B-Max 1110 15Mbps @ 1100/month - FUP 30GB post-FUP 2Mbps
(5) Beam B-Max 1660 20Mbps @ 1660/month - FUP 40GB post-FUP 4Mbps
(6) Beam B-Max 2770 25Mbps @ 2770/month - FUP 60GB post-FUP 6Mbps

(7) Reliance Thunder 699 2Mbps @ 699/month - no-FUP
(8) Reliance Thunder 1099 4Mbps @ 1099/month - no-FUP

I'm really tempted to take Beam - it somces without phone but then I don't use phone much (meaning at all).

If I take Reliance I would rather take it together with Airtel (1) above, this is more expensive than Beam, but I get two providers simultaneously - some (very expensive) protection against random network-down faults.

What do BHPians advice?

I am using the Beam 1110 Plan. I haven't used any others you speak of, so can't do a comparison.

The FUP in Beam is 30GB, which I exhaust within a week! Post FUP, the speed is 2mbps, it is still decent. You Tube videos stream without buffering, and it takes under an hour for a 700mb download.

Only downside with Beam is the retarded customer service deptt. If you install it, get hold of the local tech person's number who is responsible for your area. Give him a call rather than trying to break your head with the customer care reps. Works 99% of the times.

There are very few service disruptions/outages as such. I am happy with Beam.

EDIT: Just for clarification, no FUP once you cross the 30GB mark. So its true unlimited at 2mbps.

Can't comment on Airtel. I had used reliance in the past (5 years back). It was a really pathetic service. Changing to beam was refreshing. Faster speeds + lower downtimes + better customer support.

I am using beam 1660 Plan. 20mbps till 40GB, 4mbps after that (which is still superb). Service quality is still a question. But this varies from area to area. E.g. in our colony, customer care/technical team is very prompt but for one of my friend, the service is poor. Your best bet would be to get some feedback on the service from someone having beam in the neighborhood.

I can only envy and cry after seeing plans that are being offered in HYDERABAD.

I am paying Rs 1789 including taxes for 1Mbps No FUP Static IP Reliance Wimax Connection. Only plus point is zero down time.

My vote goes to

(4) Beam B-Max 1110 15Mbps @ 1100/month - FUP 30GB post-FUP 2Mbps

Revisiting this thread after 9 years had me rl: rl: The highest option in the thread poll was "256 kbps - I am very lucky or a liar"

Even our mobile phones today have over 2 mbps (and more)! Just waiting for 100 mbps to become the norm, rather than the exception that it is today.

Is Beam broadband available in Delhi?

That's the speed with my Beam 15 MBPS connection for which I pay Rs 1660 per month.

I'm really happy with it. I watch several youtube videos on my 42" Plasma using the Sony PS3, that streams wireless content from my router.

This is the speed of my BSNL Broadband at my Chennai home under BB Home Combo ULD900 plan:

That's technology for you!

And this post in the thread has never failed to amaze me!

2. 60G 5400 rpm Hard drive
3. 512 MB Ram

Its lightning fast, and I reinstall the OS myself every three months to have a clean system. Have the hard drive partitioned into 3 parts of 20G's each.

Hi!
I moved to Mahavir Enclave, near Dwarka sector 1 , Delhi and have taken a Reliance broadband internet connection. It really sucks. I pay Rs 850/- for 250 kbps. In Mumbai I get 3MBPS for Rs 210/-

Is there a better option in Delhi for internet connection. I need minimum 1MBPS and unlimited download.

Beam is damn cheap. I am paying 1599 + Taxes for 8 mbps. FUP 30gb on Airtel.
I do get 1000 local minutes as well but no one at home prefers using the landline and we end up using not a single minute.
They don't have a plan without these minutes.

A couple of my friends are using MTNL in Dwarka. They have the 999 - 1 Mbps plan and I don't remember them cribbing about any FUP, so I guess it's true unlimited. You could check at the nearest Sanchar haat.

I am using the Airtel 8Mbps @ 2099/month - FUP 80GB post-FUP 512kbps plan in bangalore.3 of us share the connection over wifi. The service is great. The speed is also good. With a single user there is minimal buffering and live streaming is smooth. But with more than 1 user lve streaming is affected if the other is also using youtube.Beam sounds like a amazing service provider with cheap packages and amazing true speed..How good is the support?
