It depends on the modem model actually. Probably will be in the WAN settings. But different manufacturers call it different Some calls it WAN, some calls it Internet. Which modem is your's?

Re: BSNL BroadBand Issues

I checked, it is already showing as DHCP. Guess is when i connected the wifi router with the cable to the modem, it took the default gateway for modem as local IP hence 10.xxx.xx.xx.

Would it mean i have to reset the modem? problem is i dont know the user id/password , after all this time.

I will try it from outside and see how the signal is.

One advantage if you buy from BSNL itself is..if something happens to your modem, they will be happy to replace it.
I faced a problem with the modem within a month of buying it.They promptly replaced it with a new one.
If you buy the modem from BSNL they will replace if found faulty for one year only (warranty). If you take it on rent, then of course they have to replace it whenever it happens. However, you will usually (depends on their stocks) be given a used one, if on rent.

As for the recent quality of their modems - Teracom Type 1 (wired) modem just was not working with p2p clients (torrents, ed2k, etc), even after port forwarding. It would work well in bridged mode though. Another good thing is that the modem would not reboot on power failure and when connected to UPS. This used to invariably happen with Huawei.

UTStar (Wifi) on the other hand seems to work quite well with p2p, with ports forwarded. But AFAIK they aren't giving UTStar CPEs anymore. If you can get it, its supposed to be amongst the better ones. One of the best things is that you can also set the power output. Don't know which other routers allow this. Anybody knows?

Currently, in my exchange they only have a stock of VMC. Manuf. is mentioned as Vuppalamritha Magnetic Components Ltd., Hyderabad. Anybody has any idea about the this manufacturer? Need to know, as if I have to buy from BSNL, then this is the only choice I have. And I don't think any brand of WiFi CPE is available for Rs. 1600.

But there is a catch with their "one-year warranty". Did you know that this
"one-year warranty" is actually a "one-time replacement warranty" which is valid for one year? i.e. you ran out of your "one-year warranty" as soon as you got your modem replaced within a month (your warranty coverage ended with that one-time replacement)! Lucky for you that you didn't have to find it out the hard way with your modem failing again.

Also, BSNL charged me 10% more than the MRP printed on the modem box. I got nowhere complaining. "We only charged according to our corporate fixed price". Funny how the government gets away with breaking their own laws!

Every time, are you clicking "Apply" button in configuration page only or are you clicking "Save/Reboot" ?

Re: BSNL BroadBand Issues

Folks need suggestions for a wireless good modem, which I plan to pick up externally. The existing BSNL modem has gone bad and browsing has become a pain. Damn slow, swapped the modem with a Type-II from my parents place and it works well.

Called BSNL(local area) today to check the availability for a replacement and they don't have a Type II modem in stock. They don't even have an ETA as to when this will be in stock.

I plan to pick up one from one of the local stores here, what brand would you recommend ?

Am using Dlink wireless modem and it's been more than a year now. Works really well. Think this particular is not available now. Didnt see them on the net. They have launched a new model based on the existing modem. Will let you know my model no soon.

I got this from a local computer shop.

Re: BSNL BroadBand Issues

zBSNL boadband is good as long as it works. I have used both the UT Com as supplied by them (I paid for wireless, they gave wire and took over a year to sort out the refund), and D-Link (wireless). I used run the wireless with Mac filtering to prevent aunauthorised access. However, if you have a breakdown on BSNL even God may not be able to help you.

I switched to an EVDO a year ago, and it is bliss. I may add I have a 1Gbps pipe at work.

You won't get a modem in the market for the price BSNL sells for. I'd suggest you try getting one on rent (mostly they will give you a used one) until they get stock of new modems. Else try to buy one from other exchanges.

As far as BSNL's modems go, UTStar, Huawei were supposed to be amongst the best. But it seems BSNL no longer buys from them (not sure). Normally they get a lot of 1 brand and you have to take that, no choices. But you will get one year warranty. However, I recall someone posting that they will replace it once only.

This is a bit OT, but using MAC filtering in isolation is not a good idea. A wireless network using only MAC filtering for preventing unauthorised access can be hacked very easily.

A better approach would be to disable SSID broadcast and use WPA2 encryption. You may also use MAC filtering along with these.

+1, I use all of these - disable SSID broadcast, use WPA2 encryption and MAC filtering. But now trying to move over wired LAN due to HD media sharing within home.
