don't forget to

1. reset it to factory conditions.
2. apply latest firmware.
FinePix HS10 / HS11 Firmware (camera control software) Update | Fujifilm Global
3. take complete manual for reference(pdf in cd).
4. take a larger capacity card if possible.

Superzoom camera tryout day

Today was my superzoom camera tryout day.
The contenders
Panasonic FZ-35 18X
Nikon P100 26X
Olympus 800 (30X)
Sony HX1 (20x)
Canon SX20 (20x)
Fuji HS10 30X

I was able to try out Panny, Nikon, Oly, Sony and canon. Unfortunately, nobody had an HS10(will be available in 2-3 days)

First the Nikon. I was interested in video, therefore thats what I tested. Well zoom out here and there, pan the camera, once it loses focus, getting focus back is almost impossible. Inspite of the salesman claiming that no other camera in the world can optical zoom while filming video, the camera failed to deliver. Probably the worst camera, esp for video.

Oly I decided not to test at all. The reason being if you want to use optical zoom during video, you need to switch off sound. What idiocy. Moreover, hardly any video controls

Now the sony, was a relevation. Good focus lock. Made is a nice contender inspite of memory stick storage. Great cam.

And now for the Canon SX20. Amazing focus lock. The best. But no RAW and no manual controls in video

Last the panny. The camera I may most probably get. Great focus lock even at 18X zoom, and I saw the recorded footage on a 42" TV via normal AV cables(HDMI not in stock at panasonic shop). It was very very good, even though I recoded at lowest High def quality setting.

Moreover this cam gives me full manual control in video, and also allows WVGA in MPEG. MY laptop will commit suicide if I got it near a AVCHD file. So panny can directly play footage on my TV via HDMI, and for other stuff I intend to shoot WVGA

So the best cameras for video. Canon SX20 and Panny FZ28.
Only place where the canon gets beaten is lack of manual controls. Other than that, in AF during video, it slightly betters the panny.
But it has no RAW mode either.

But canon allows me an easier workflow(my DSLR is canon, no need to use 2 different softwares). OTOH, if I shoot JPEG only, any image editor will do. Since the canon SX20 has no RAW mode, that point loses significance

So canon or panny? I lean towards the panny, but one caveat.

Joshisons guy(to be fair to panasonic he is fuji dealer also), told me that panasonic service is very bad. If I go to panasonic service center, I will never buy a panasonic product.
How much truth is there in this statement. Anybody care to give feedback?

I have been very satisfied with Panasonic service for my washing machine during the last 6-7 years of ownership. But I have no idea about the support for digital equipment.

Panasonic FZ35 is a camera that I too have shortlisted. But now that you have raised this concern about their support, I will wait for more input from others.

Well joshisons is mostly a Fuji house with some Oly, canon and nikon. They do not carry panasonic. Maybe that prompted this comment?
As for service, canon has exemplary service(experienced first hand), but other than that I am not aware of any other MFR. LG is good too(in case of LCD TV), but as for panasonic, well lets see.
However, be aware that in 99.9% of cases you may never require service at all!

just got back from a 3 day trip with my Fuji HS10. I am so far very satisfied by the performance. I am not ACE at photography, but over all i would rate 9/10. i managed to click a few distant shots. still getting used to the 30x zoom and trying to keep my hands steady.

@vivekiny2k, thanks for your inputs. Shall surely follow the steps as advised by you.

Try Fuji S2500/S1800. They retail for 13K with memory card(you can bargain at smaller dealers).
Great cameras, good zoom, good all rounds with HD video

Tanveer, They are working on the CHDK version for SX20 IS currently & once that is done, RAW would be available (Its already available for SX10 ) Plus a host of other goodies

You can follow the CHDK progress thread for SX20 here

I have a Panasonic FZ28 for about 2 years. Brilliant and capable P&S. The image stabilization is superb, much better than the 55-250 IS. So is the video mode.

My cousin bought a FZ35 a few months back and he is satisfied as well.

Panasonic TZ 10 Vs Canon SX 210 IS

I am upgrading from my 5 MP digital camera. I have short-listed the Panasonic TZ-10 and Canon SX 210 IS.

After reading so many reviews, I am inclining towards the TZ-10.

Can you please provide your valuable suggestions?
