Been using the D300 with a 18-200mm Vr lens for a month
and must say piscs at 3200 are very good
havnt tried boost(6400)

annoying thing is i have one teeny weeny dead pixel on my LCD .....

B&H, Adorama - have bought from both, online & in-store. Keep aside sufficient time if you are going in-store. Both are safe bets.

Try for an on-line purchase, but with billing & delivery address outside the state of NY. Any retailer will charge tax if you are buying in-store, or if on-line - when your billing / shipping address is in a state where the retailer has a physical presence. One exception is if the retailer specifically states he will absorb the tax part.

I am currently in Toronto, Canada on official duty. Trying to get some good snaps in this peak winter time here. Its pretty much fully white and I find it quite difficult to get decent pictures on my Canon S5 and A80. Most of them look very pale and foggy. Request gurus here to advice me on appropriate techniques. Shall post some sample images in the other thread.

Appuchan, camera has a tendency to under expose in situations where the scene is predominantly white, so shift to any of the semi-auto modes and compensate the exposure.

I'll envy you everytime I need a swivel LCD; for me however canon's extensive service network in India was the killer (besides my friends and niece who are Pros all use Canon so I believe I would be in a better position to twist some arms if they deny me service).

This is a whole new beast. Will take some time learning it, photos may have to wait. Even though I am very familiar with E-500, I couldn't figure out how to change mode in E3 until I read the manual. So, some controls are very different, while most others are similar. I need to customise to my shooting needs. It is a little bigger than E-500, but the viewfinder is just amazing. I could easily focus in dull indoor lights, even dark objects like my camera bag. No more lowlight AF problems for me.

Now I might need a new carry bag for the bigger camera.

I am also trying out Adobe Lightroom trial.

Hey guys,
im planning on buying a digital camera. Now im a shutterbug but dont really have a good camera, the only one i have is a vga on my cell which is just a gap fill measure.
I am looking for a basic camera in the range of Rs.10,000/-
Am also considering the K810i Cybershot Phone with Xenon Flash by Sony Ericsson as then i wont have to carry around a camera and a phone.

What are your suggestions? Please keep in mind that my needs are for a basic camera and the settings are mostly going to be on AUTO for 90% of the time and print outs will be almost negligible. Mostly the photos will be stored and viewed electronically (On the Computer or on a phone).

So does it make sense to go for the K810i to fullfill my camera need?

Also i forgot to mention another cam-phone contender is the Nokia N73 which people say also has a very good camera but i am a Sony Ericsson fan.

Both the phones are 3MP and i frankly dont think i require more.

No camera phone not even the N82/N95 etc.. can compete with even a basic digicam. It is not the number of megapixels but the size of the pixels that is more imprtant (after you cross the basic 4MP resolution). This means that a 4MP camera with a 1/2.5" CCD might take a better picture than a 10MP camera with a 1/2.5" CCD (for example my 6 year old Canon G2 compares quite favourably with my few month old Canon IXUS 860).

A camrea phone is good for when you dont have a camera though.

Background to case

Amateur trekker with a passion for photography. Currently using a Sony T100 digi for exploring shots.

Budget to purchase new unit

Roughly Rs 40K - INR purchase to help with warranty ( if that really helps )

Need help in selecting a good camera based on your collective wisdom. As this will probably be my last camera purchase for atleast a decade.

Am inclined towards the H9 - Sony but this is jus an impulse, with no real rationale.

Appreciate all your guidance through this process.

...!!! For your sake, I wish I get a stupendous rise and can afford atleast one new Cam every two years inclusive of lens

- Sure it can be a DSLR if it comes at the price. Any brand / product suggestions.

- Even though am exposed only to a miniscule SONY T 100, i remember my younger days when folks at home drolled over a Yashica & an Olympus. Are they still as good a brand as they were made out to be then..or has technology got the better of these old-time Champions??
