I have Canon OowerShot SD870 IS. I always use it in auto mode and it's working pretty good. The video is also nice.

Why do you not try the G9. I got it from brother abroad and costs around 18-20K in UK. OK, it is not SLR, but definitely better than most of the digicams in that range. If you want, I can mail you a sample photo taken from my G9.

G9 is one of the most capable point and shoots alongwith the fujifilm s100 series.

Eliminate all 3-5x optical zoom cameras. I bought G9 with a 6X zoom. That was lower than S5IS (10-12 x) but I thought it could be extended thru optional equipment later. The photo results on G9 are very good, and it gives even better with only a little bit of customisation. I got it as an import for 19K in 11/07 and prices may be even lower now. At 15K+10%, you would be wasting money on 3-4x zooms.

thanks Vasudeva, i am following this thread and still not able to decide. TZ5 and G9 are capable cameras. with TZ5 having a bit more features such as HD video recording (althought this can't match the proper handycam video). TZ5 is highly recommended in the dpreview. There is one more option though for those who love manual controls.
check the Pentax K100D DSLR. should be good. any idea about this camera?

Vasudeva? why don't you post the sample G9 pic here?

Zoomingbhat, Go for the powershot S5 IS ( INR 20995/- ) or SX100 IS ( Rs 15995/- ).

Price from canon.co.in.

Similar sort of process that I went through. Nearly went for a used D200 till I saw the D300. Obviously my reasons for buying it were not all that professional as I am very much a novice, but the D300 blew the D200 away.

Congrats!

Just came across this high end camera, which will be avaliable from october 2008. 50 Mpixel 36×48mm sensor, which measures, twice the physical size of the largest 35mm DSLR sensors, the H3DII-50 camera system has been specially designed to meet the most exacting demands of high-end commercial photographers who require the ultimate in both image quality and performance

Seems like the digital equivalent of a medium format camera. I thought there were a couple of similar (large sensor based) products already around

Trust me, G9 performs as claimed and then more. Of course, that came in mid-2007 and till the time I bought it in Nov 2007, it was amongst the best in its range and somewhat above (the best?). This is July 2008.

You can see a photo here (of wife's sister husband):

vasudeva - SOME G9 PHOTOS

My son:

Each G9 photo is around 4-5MB and it may not be possible to email. More photos can be seen at other websites.

The only equivalent of Medium format in Canikon range is Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III. 21.1 MPS camera with a 1.3x crop factor, Dual DIGIC-III 14 bit processor chips make it superfast and at the same time, unparrelled. And not to mention, Up to 5 fps, burst rate up to 12 consecutive RAW images or 56 full-resolution JPEGs, and compatible with newest UDMA high-speed CF cards, it is simply superb.

I am not going to compare it with D3 because there are simply enough difference to keep it at a different plain. Plus, I also wouldn't like to open a can of worms (Read Nikon vs Canon).

Please have a look at the other super zoom's too just befor you purchase, the image quality of the FZ18 somehow seems to be ages behind those having 10x/12x zooms, just compared my friends fz18 with my s3is, ofcourse other than the reach and everything anything above ISO 200 seems to be of really pathetic image quality on the fz18. Have a look at Nikon P80 & Fujifilm S8100 fd as well.

Contact R.K Photoguide or Photocircle to get good prices.

From what I know, S8100fd is a good model, but FZ18 is better than the Nikon P80.

I came to know Panasonic FZ18 picture is not great and Fuji 8100fd and few similar models in Canoon have better image quality.

I saw FotoCircle and other shop guys try to push Panasonic over Fuji and Canoon/Nikon since its slow moving in sales i guess.

I suggest Fuji s8100fd which would cost 15,000 range over FZ18 which would cost 18,000 range.

If someone has baught Fuji s100fs let me know I am ready to buy that after complete research.

Regards,

Ravi.
