Re: Help :Choosing a Netbook?

Let me get you a initial ownership review-
easy to use, easier on the eyes, little heavier to carry than a 10 incher, the trackpad surface has a strange problem being a bit sticky to use even with fingers changing, may be because its steel, but it looks damn good, machined metal. Very good camera for chat. ..contd

Where did you buy this particular model? Full specs linky will be helpful.

I'm shopping for a no frills netbook for my dad and had shortlisted the HP Mini 110-3106TU (HP Mini 110-3106tu PC (XP525PA) specifications - HP Home & Home Office products)

This is a stopped model as per the website but sold at the HP stores @ an discounted price of 15K all inclusive.

Re: Help :Choosing a Netbook?

@JKDas, Sorry I did not see your post. Just noticed it now. I already ended up buying ASUS EEPC. Very decent spec with 2 GB DDR3 and 320GB HDD, and 12.1 display.
Costed about 23K.

Here is the link to the specs.

Re: Help :Choosing a Netbook?

DELL M101Z (aka Inspiron 1120). Is it a netbook or notebook?:

Reaching U.S.A. on 29 March 2011 on a 108 day visit, I reversed my decision not to buy a laptop and started looking for an affordable netbook that is easy on travel, peppy enough and HD capable.

Out went an order for the DELL M101Z on 31 March 2011 and I received it on 12 April 2011. Cost USD 590.

The Specifications:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

AMD Athlon II Neo K325 1.3 MHz Dual Core

ATI Mobility Radeon HD4225

2X2GB DDR3 1333

320 GB 7200 RPM Sata II HDD

11.6" 1366X728 HD WXGA TLF WLED display

802.11 b/g/n Wi Fi, Blutooth3, 10/100 LAN

1.3 MP webcam

SRS Premium Sound, 2X1.5W Speakers

3XUSB 2, LAN, VGA, HDMI, 3 in 1 Card reader, audio jacks (Line-out, Mic), SIM Card slot

6 cell Li-ion 56Whr battery pack

The DELL M101Z laptop : ( The Blue ASUS external Blu-ray writer SBW-06C1S -U is a seperate USD 127 purchase from newegg )

The Netbook Thread.-dell-m101z.jpg

Playing a video clip shot with Kodak Zi8 Pocket HD Camcorder ( a $70 purchase after a rebate of $110 from Officemax - and that was a steal)

The Netbook Thread.-5312011-103300-pm.jpg

i have now been using the laptop for over a month and a half. The only thing I am not happy with is the Glossy 11.6" screen. The letters are very small and so I have to increase the fonts to 125% zoom.

While during daytime I have no difficulty reading them, I find it difficult to read at night. May be the usually dim lights in U.S. homes is the reason.
With bright ceiling lights in India I may perhaps feel comfortable.

The laptop made it possible to continue my rantings in Windows SevenForums and keep browsing Team-BHP. Incidently, shortly after my arrival in U.S.A. I got my Seven Guru badge (1000 reputation points) at a post count of 343. Today my post count is 439, thanks to my laptop.

Re: Help :Choosing a Netbook?

Small keyboard will never easily go away with a netbook. My take for that is at home keep a dummy work bench with a larger display, USB hub (with keyboard and mouse connected) and plonk the netbook in to use it better. Only when is really mobile in the house, let one use the key board and display. In fact I do the same even for my regular-work laptop.

Re: Netbook purchase advice needed - totally confused as all look the same to me!!

^^
Considering your requirements, u dont need to have such a budget. 17 - 18K should suffice. But if you want to spend it, you should obviously expect other kool things to be done well too - like video playback. So here is my suggestion based on ur budget :

Netbooks would not be able to play 1080P videos smoothly and would even show problems in playing 720P content streamed from YouTube. I bought an Asus 1215P after a considerable research. It has a very decent configuration, for a netbook, but still faces the above problems.

However, the AMD Fusion GPU powered netbooks are much better at this. Check out the sony YB series netbook. It sells for 26K and has a windows experience rating of 3.7 which even beats my Inspiron 1545.

I feel its one of the best netbooks available today since all the others have experience ratings of 2.9 or lower, and the fusion chip works wonders for it.

So i would recommend the Sony AMD Fusion YB series netbook to you.

PS: i am not sure of the exact YB-XXXX model number. Please look it up. And you can check windows experience ratings of display models in malls/electronic stores. Right Click Computer >> Properties >> System Rating. (if it is not available, click "update my score").

Hope it helps.

HP Pavilion dm1z & Dell m102z series also come with AMD E-350 processor (APU). These run Windows 7 and have good HD content playback.

@SilkDrive. Both the netbooks you mentioned are fantastic. Asus has an additional advantage over Y series in terms of display size (11.6 versus 12.1 )

In fact I bought both these (I think what I got was the Asus 1215N) over a span of 2 weeks (some 3 months back), but purchased for others.

Asus authorized shops are available, but one needs to call their head/zonal office to find out from which places one needs to buy.
Sony is available at all the big shops.

Thanks Silk drive. I initially understood my requirements and had the budget of max 20k in my mind. But when i started to look all the alternatives slowly landed up selecting either Lenova/Samsung with Intel i3 Core processor-500GB Hard disk-2/3GB Ram and 15.6inch screen.

If you suggest me some models within 20K then which that would be and also say whether samsung is a good go because of the unique screen and keypad (as the sales advisor blabbers so much about samsung)

Re: Netbook purchase advice needed - totally confused as all look the same to me!!

Well, i wish i could have given a valuable answer to your question. :-(

Actually i am no expert, i just faced the same dilemma like u 2 months back and I ended up extending my budget from 17K to 23K. I saw a Samsung model for 17K, with Atom Dual Core N550 processor and 1Gig of RAM. It was good enough but somehow, i did not have complete trust Samsung when it comes to PCs, as it was too new (its just me). Though, my LCD TV and other applainces (refrigerator, washing machine) are Samsungs.

Few models I found good in 20-22K range were :

1. Asus 1215T (AMD & DOS only) 20.5K
2. Asus 1215P (Intel atom Dual Core and Win7 starter) 22.4K
3. Toshiba NB520 (Intel Atom dual core, 2 GB RAM, Best ever speakers on laptops) i realy liked and recommend. 22K
4. Hp mini 210-2100 (Intel Atom dual core and 1 GB ram) 19K @ croma

Beyond this price range:

5. Sony YB15 (AMD fusion) 26K

And please look at the other AMD fusion models, that others mentioned. I guess AMD Fusion based models would be the best bet if u decide to spend few extra bucks.
They doo perform like (or even outperform ful grown laptops) when it comes to graphics.
