Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Got the Redmi Note 3 Gold colour yesterday -its the 16Gb model. Initial impressions are good. The phone feels premium with the metal touch. The phone heats only while charging or using resource intensive apps. This is similar to the heating issue i see on Moto x play. Nothing alarming. I am using google now launcher, hence app drawer is present and makes things easy for me. Also after installing all apps that i use regularly and the Google now launcher, i see 600 to 700 MB of RAM free, which is good. Also free/usable space is approximately 9.3GB out of 16GB. I now have 3.78 GB free. That should be fine for now I hope. The phone is a treat for music lovers. I am using sennheiser CX 180 headphone and the music clarity and bass is too good.

Many of the users are rating it down in amazon because of the non availability of 32 GB models. I would say that MI didn't anticipate the demand and is now facing the backlash.

Bottom line is the phone is a true value for money.

Thanks for that piece of info on the RAM. Could you please send a screenshot of the apps installed ? 700 MB of free RAM is terrible for a 2GB RAM phone.

I use a Moto G3 2 GB / 16 GB variant and get about 1.0 - 1.2 GB free RAM at any instance. This is what I expect from a 2 GB RAM phone.

My wife was contemplating on buying the Redmi Note 3, 32 GB / 3 GB RAM variant, but I was in favour of the 16 GB / 2 GB variant.
Although I had added the phone in my cart, good that we didn't buy the 2 GB RAM variant. She gets 600 MB free RAM from her Samsung Grand 2 which has only 1.5 GB RAM.

I strongly have a feeling that RAM management is very poor in these latest gen of "chinese" handsets. It could be other wise too, where one may be running many apps in the background and the notifications are ON as well (which would be consuming memory to check for updates, etc).

Which is why, I would request you to share screenshots of the app drawer, so that I can get a fair idea of the number of apps installed.
Also if possible please share screenshot of the Memory usage screen. My usage screenshot shown below:

Memory usage is quite high in MIUI especially because its not stock android. I have little over 92 apps installed and i fell the RAM usage is fair. I will post screenshots later. 2 GB is fine for me, but if you are a heavy/power user, then 3GB model makes sense.

Unlike stock android or Moto ones, in MIUI you can kill all recent apps using a single touch by clicking the recent apps button.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Why do people obsess over RAM usage? It is a resource; it is there to be used. There is no advantage at all in keeping memory usage low. running out, of course, would be a different matter.

The Moto (6.0... was it the same in Lollipop, I forget?)* unclearable recently-used-apps screen is a useless mess of a facility. To be able to return to an app that I have been recently using, and open it in the same state, is great. To be faced with every app since fovever is like carrying the house garbage around with us all day. I use an add-on to make this heap of rubbish clearable --- not because of RAM, but to make the facility sensible again.

*Actually, I think this is an Android 6 thing, not a vendor thing.

I can clear them all with a single tap on my Moto G running CyanogenMod 13.

BTW, I think there is still the option of clearing them individually by swiping across them?

You need only enough RAM to start the next couple of apps without lag - as long as the system remains responsive enough, free RAM is an academic number.

My S3 was the most fluid when on MIUI (4.4 kitkat) and it never had more than 80-120 MB free. I never felt any lag in any activity with MIUI.

The OEM ROM in the same free memory would be simply non-responsive. So I don't place too much credence in the free RAM number beyond a point.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Don't know if this is the right thread to post this noob question.

I own an Asus Zenfone 5 running on kitkat version. These days (rather last few months), the Whatsapp hangs whenever I try to open a pic or video. Happens more than often and has become slightly irritating. Anybody face this issue, any solutions??

Also is there any way to delete the previous history of whatsapp messages? If I check in the Settings<storage>Misc I can see a Whatsapp file of 1 GB. Deleting file will do what??

I would not say so. I have a redmi 2 prime running on MIUI 7. when all apps are cleared I have 1.2 -1.3 gb of free ram. When using several apps, after few days without clearing the ram, I still have 800mb free. I am not a power user though. I know that the main discussion is related to redmi 3 note, but my point is that MIUI itself is not a heavy on ram. Obviously the kind of apps that you have installed also has an effect on the amount of ram available. Even if you are not using and does not appear in the recent apps screen, some apps run in the background.

hi.
depending on the WA version you are using (I suggest you upgrade to latest), there could be multiple ways to handle the data. dont fiddle with any internal files of WA on the memory, there are master and backup files.

- open the individual chats (pvt or groups), and from options Clear the chats; no point holding the chronology of conversations for years in WA database; unless its really important to hold that chat.

- in WA there is a option to Delete All Chats - All means All, use it carefully!

- go to Gallery and from the WA Img and Vid folders, individually delete the files that you dont use. this may take a longer time! I do this every few days, and generally delete the several media files (jokes, etc) to keep the WA and phone memory optimized.

- you can use an app WCleaner (bit dated), which allows you to delete the Img, Audio, Vid, Voice files from the WA database. surely, a preview of these media files would be helpful, not to accidentally delete some important data.

- WA will backup at 3.00AM every day, and hopefully by above the file size will be smaller; resulting in faster WA and a bit free memory.

regards,

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Sharing my experience with a tempered glass screen protector for Moto G Turbo.

After installing the tempered glass screen protector (which is quite thick by the way), there was noticeable problem with the touch sensitivity while scrolling through a list of contacts or gallery.

After spending several hours with settings and online forums, I removed that brand new piece of 'glass' and voila - the problem was gone.

Then I went to the market and got a normal 'screen guard'. There is no problem with that one.

Lesson learnt: Some times the more expensive things may not necessarily be suitable for you.

@S_U_N; As a rule I do not put any protectors on the touchscreen glass. So people do need it, like my son (twice) and daughter-in-law (once).

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Here's some bad news: Google My Tracks will no longer be available from April 30, 2016.
Source: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6333516?hl=en

What is the best alternate apps to track GPS data while on road trips? I would like it if the app gives at least the same information which My Tracks does.

I don't mind paying less than INR 100 for the app.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I guess it depends as much on the quality of the accessory too.

I bought a One plus upon it's launch along with a tempered glass protector also from the OEM. Installed it a week after initial usage with the help of the included guide and have never had an issue ever. No problems with the touch sensitivity , swipe or press actions either.

If you have 1GB of RAM free then it means the RAM is not being utilised. RAM should have maximum usage and the free RAM should only be enough for opening next few apps.

If the system has 200-300MB RAM free means it has all apps loaded on the RAM and will open without lag.

If you have 1GB free then either you don't have much apps or are just wasting the free RAM.

From last week I have moved to a Nexus 5X with 2GB RAM. Even with all my apps installed I can see 1.5-1.7GB RAM being used at all times.

Phone works without any lag. Infact I was using a Oneplus X with 3GB RAM and the NExus is snappier. The One Plus X was using around 2GB at all times.

I am looking for a Free/Low Cost Version Car Expense Logger. I am currently using "acar" App (Free Version) and am happy with it. But the Free Version does not allow to take manual backups but automatically takes monthly backups. And the Pro Version costs Rs.399/-.

This app has option to schedule the different types of services i.e. Engine Oil, Gear Oil, Coolant, Suspension Parts, separately according to odometer as well as months. This app reminds through notifications the upcoming due service(s).

I have checked the Fuelio app but it is not like acar. Fuelio does not allow to select multiple services at a time.
Please suggest me app similar to acar where I can add multiple vehicles and no limits on the records of entries and can take manual backup as required.
If no other app is available, I will have to purchase acar Pro Version.

I am attaching the screenshots of acar app for your reference.
