Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Guys I updared my Optimus One to Gingerbread yesterday. It was successfully updated. Today I was downloading a youtube video using tubemate. It was downloading then suddenly it lost the wifi signald as well as the network signals. I opened settings menu and under that Wireless network it was showing error. Then suddenly it again got connected and again it lost all the signals. As soon as I stopped downloading it became normal. What could be the reason?

Android 4.0.3. There is a major update coming in a couple of months which is the push to 4.0.4. Read more about it on XDA. That forum is a massive resource for Android.

Realistically, you should be getting about 20-26 hours. During the day, I have the screen brightness set to about 80%, 3G and auto sync on all the time, about an hour each worth of games and music and browsing, and wifi in the evening. At night, everything gets shut down and the phone has about 10% charge before I charge it to full just before I leave for work in the morning.

Incidentally, my phone battery used to drain by about 10%-15% during the night even when everything was off. Try the Easy battery saver. This has arrested it down to about 2%.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Any one using Idea 3G network in Kerala, please comment on the battery life. I am facing horrible battery drain and on Idea 3G. Reception levels are pretty good is what I noticed. The thing is afterwards I checked with a BSNL 3G sim and the battery seems to last at least 40% more time on BSNL 3G

Whoa! Is that so? IMO the only shortcoming of Android was the lack of visual treat. What use are the 720p screens if the animations are no good. Certainly looks like "Project Butter" has paid off.

Contrary to others I have faced no issues with ICS update to my Note. Battery life also remains the same i.e. 24 hours with full time 3G, Bluetooth on and with 2 hours of talk and some 1 hour play.

Wonder what the update was about.

The ICS Kernel is able to utilize both the processor cores, so upgrading to ICS means better performance in Dual/Multi core phones.

After upgrading to ICS first version for Galaxy Note (DDLP8) in May,
1. The brower performance had improved dramatically.
2. Even the S-Note is lot smoother, sensitive and responsive in ICS.

On the downside, the battery life reduced from 36 Hours charge intervals (in GingerBread) to about 24 Hours (in ICS DDLP8) for the same level of usage.

In DDLP8, there was a bug which prevented the Note from going into "Deep-Sleep" mode when the phone is idle, so it resulted in significant battery drain even when the phone is idle.

After upgrading to the Second ICS patch (DDLPA) for Note last week (June) , that Deep-Sleep bug seems to have disappeared. The phone now goes to "Deep-Sleep" mode and the battery level is coming down by about 10% overnight (instead of about 30% in the previous DDLP8)
So I'm happy with the battery performance now after going to ICS DDLPA.

If you are buying over the counter then rates will depend upon the requirement there. In Hyderabad it is available for price anywhere between 38k to 40k.

I had initially booked it from suleka.com for 35k but due to long delivery period got it cancelled and picked up 3 weeks back for 36.9k. Today again there is a deal on sulekha where using a coupon you get 3k off on the price. Not very sure if this off is applicable on sgs3. Try bargaining hard on retail counters and you can get it for 37.5 to 38k.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

thanks for the detailed info. i'll target to buy it below 38k based on your feedback.

i'm upgrading from a iphone 3G bought about 3yrs ago. my brother is using note and he's very happy with it. i was confused for long time over s3, one x, xperia s, galaxy note and others. All of them are superb and equals as far as features & performace go. it was very difficult to make a choice but i've decided to go for the S3. hopefully it'll satisfy me and i'll be happy for sometime to come.

i expect the S3 to have impressive longevity due to quad core, 8 mp, & 1 gb ram. but who knows, the next generation phones might have dual cores which might be faster than today's quad core, 12 mp cameras which blow away the current 8 mp and 2 gb ram.

although i still expect the S3 to have longer shelf life/longevity then the original Galaxy & S2.

I upgraded my dad's note today to 4.0.3. So I think it is available for sure.
I'm still waiting for my DHD. Planning to sell and get an One X or S III.

Is it worth getting for use in India (considering the current exchange rates)?

Also, I have seen people getting issues even on unlocked phones. One guy had to send back his phone and get a new one after it refused to work after 2-3 days. He didn't fill me in what exactly was the issue though.

If ever I decide to get one, I wouldn't want to send it back and all that. Lastly could you please point me from where I can get this @ $350? Checked amazon and it says $400 something.

Its on the Google play store.
https://play.google.com/store/device...axy_nexus_hspa

if you wait a little, say till mid july, it will get 4.1 by default. Right now it is upgradeable.

As for issues, i am not the right person to ask as i don't have experience with this neither in USA nor in India.

But at $350, it is VFM here atleast. Here we can't get such a phone for this low price. It is always $500 or more. Over there, i am not sure. Others can chime in.

You can contact google and ask them about international device policy if any. I am sure it may have international warranty that will help you in India.
