re: Maruti Stingray (WagonR) - Launched @ 4.09 Lakhs

Do any guys have any ideas about a Stingray diesel? If it comes it would be a sales topper and would smash and cannibalize it's own siblings (Swift, are you hearing?). Has anyone spotted it before or has any insider been posted already?. Also is there any speculation about the price of the Stingray petrol? Has anyone seen the interiors of the Stingray? If so, please post details.

Cheers,

Achyuth

Wagon R diesel would make sense. In event that the Brio Diesel is launched, Swift D's market share would take a hit, in this case the Wagon R Diesel can make the entry price point lower and still retain Maruti's dominance. Hence to me, Wangon R Diesel would be very strategic.

I don't think Brio has what it takes to beat Swift. Swift is still the best looking hatch there is. And not just looks, it scores high on all fronts. IMO, Brio has nothing other than Honda badge.

AFAIK, there are no plans of launching a Diesel powered Sting Ray. Sting Ray will sell alongside the present WagonR.

WagonR and diesel are two different things for the time being. Just like Chevy wont give us the Spark Diesel. Both these companies fear cannibalisation as their cars- Beat from Chevy, Swift/Ritz are already selling quite well with the diesel.

More than cannibalisation, these cars are b not designed to house a diesel engine. They can build a new car instead of spending the money for R&D and alert existing variant.

I dont think initially the Beat was designed to house a diesel (international variants only came with petrol everywhere else), but Chevy detached a cylinder from the MJD, and plonked it into the small bay of the Beat. The same can be done with Spark.
But you may be correct about wagonR, because I do not know whether Maruti is capable of pulling off a 3 cylinder (the MJD would seriously eat the Ritz alive), or maybe put a detuned MJD with better dribeability. It can be done, and would definitely not be as costly as producing a new car from scratch. But then, the pricing would take it in Figo territory, and for the time being, the WagonR is selling quite well already, then why mess with it?

If it ain't broken don't fix it. Maruti to has mastered the art of keeping age old models in market. With facelifts and limited editions. They also are expert in changing shells and selling age old crap with a New tag. To name a few popular models 800&Alto, Ritz&Swift. Too many models also creates confusion in the market.

So the current Alto800 and Swift are age old crap with a new tag? I did not know that. Special editions apart, as they are not any facelifts.

re: Maruti Stingray (WagonR) - Launched @ 4.09 Lakhs

What I mean is, you have M800 5 speed, change the body shell and you get the Alto800. The Alto K10 with a body build becomes the A-Star. Same models with little tweaks run for decades before a new engine comes in and a new shell is released. Yes there will be difference and premium feel to next model, but then the technology to build these stuffs have jumped leaps and bounds by this time. Same with Swift to Ritz.

The newer engines are always reserved for the top variants.

Anyway the point is by the time these cars manage the 80K odo mark, these delicate babies are not reliable for highway anymore. Unless someone maintained and drove it with lot of love and care. The fresh feel after service wears off within the next 300km, off-course our roads and traffic are to be blamed as well.

For some ignorant people, Swift is an age old car. But we know that only the name is old, but is an all new car. And we know how old and ancient looking are cars like Duster, Santro, Accent, Figo etc, and the respective manufacturers sell them as new products.

Sorry to say but your information is completely incorrect.

M800 5 speed does not equal Alto. M800 is the second generation platform of Suzuki Alto. The Alto and Alto 800 is the fifth generation of the Alto platform. Completely different mind you. The A-star is 7th generation of Alto platform.

Then you come to the WagonR. The WAgonR sold in India till 2010 was second generation WagonR. The blue eyed one launched in 2010 is the 4th gen international WagonR.

The Stingray being launched in India is based on the 4th generation of WagonR platform.

Basically these are like new generations built on new platforms like all manufacturers progress from one generation to the other.

What Hillman basically meant, that the (Engine+Gearbox+some mechanicals) combination of many cars are same. For example Alto K10 and A-Star, M800 5 speed and Alto.

Yes, the difference between so called generations is just to be compliant with the new laws.
The body and interior are pretty cosmetic. They just play with an existing template or platform.

The Swift for example was a new platform after many years, but it still used an age old Esteem engine initially.

The heart of the vehicle its engine and the mechanics is what need continuous evolution. What we see mostly are tweaks for compliance according to law and a new name. If you see carefully, all manufacturers almost have a new engine coming out around same time. A real change comes in a few decades.

The new engine is added to the top variant to command a premium, slowly it will percolate to lower variants in coming years.

Not something expected from Maruti which has a Lions share of the market. An age old investment and their own full fledged design center in India.

I might not be knowing the in depths, but that's my take. If someone can throw good light on it, that will be a great information out here for reference.
