Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

Toyota to supply more cars to Suzuki in due course.

Quote:
Even though right now we start by supplying some of our products to them, but in future, we are getting some products from them and those kinds of collaboration will be developed step-by-step. Eventually, both sides will be making gains. That is the purpose of this kind of alignment. Also, globally, the auto industry is quickly changing. Toyota side they have very advanced technology etc. May be we can learn through this kind of alliance
On EV's:

Quote:
Maruti Suzuki is testing the electric version of WagonR it built inhouse, but expects technology for newer vehicles from Toyota going ahead.

Toyota - Suzuki partnership takes shape globally .

Toyota Kenya starts selling Suzuki models.

This looks different from what we are hearing for Indian market isn't it ? Here i can see Toyota selling Suzuki brand under their umbrella(see here) Unlike re-badged brezza/baleno/corolla we have been hearing.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

A heard from a birdie that

1: The Toyota Baleno barely looks any different from the Suzuki one

2: Toyota is offering the the Etios Cross to Maruti

Am not sure whether point 2 is actually happening or in discussion

Not sure how much Suzuki as a brand will gain from this but it looks like Toyota as a Brand will lose more (considering quality of Suzuki cars). Unless they strictly impose Toyota's standard and QA, I fear Toyota's brand value getting diluted with Baleno rebadging though they might set sales chart on fire

The more TMC/TKM disclose or clarify their plans the more I feel/believe..as I did nearly a year ago..this is shaping up to be an eventual take over of Suzuki by TMC some day in the future. Portfolios and technolgies to be leveraged both ways.

There's nothing quite like Suzuki's clutch of small cars that check a majority of boxes for that segment in developing countries. And there's nothing quite like TMC's technology in hybrid and, as an extension of those capabilities, into electric PVs someday in the future. A tiny Alto/Ignis like electrical vehicle would be ideal in polluted crowded cities and towns.

While point 1 might be true but for point 2, why would Maruti need an Etios cross? Or maybe its an Etios cross with a completely new shell, or just for exports to other emerging markets, which may make sense.

Maruti Suzuki to supply Ciaz, Ertiga to Toyota in India

As per a joint release from the carmakers, Maruti Suzuki will supply the Ciaz midsize sedan and Ertiga MPV to Toyota in India and Africa.

Quote:
Suzuki and Toyota have already partnered for the supply of certain models in India and Africa and also the popularisation of electric models in our market. The two Japanese manufacturers have today announced they are looking to expand the scope of their cooperation.
While there is no timeline as to when the Toyota versions of the Maruti models will go on sale, the carmakers have confirmed Toyota’s version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will be manufactured at the Toyota Kirloskar Motor plant in Bidadi, Karnataka from 2022. As reported already, Toyota’s version of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno hatchback will go on sale within 2019 as the first model to come from the partnership. As per the terms of the partnership, Toyota will also supply the Corolla Altis to Maruti Suzuki though it is expected that this will happen only once the next-gen version of the sedan goes on sale post 2020.

So 2022 Vitara Brezza will be mostly the next-gen SUV that will come as Toyota.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

First Up, it was the Baleno and Brezza. Now comes Ciaz and Ertiga.

Next up ? Fortuner & Innova Crysta ?
These are Toyota's 2 Bread & Butter models. I think Suzuki will get them eventually, maybe Next Generation Models.

Maruti then will have a segment leader in each category.

One thing though, I hope the Toyota's models will be as successful as Suzuki counterparts.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

I wonder what is in it for the well entrenched Suzuki India customer base to consider a proxy with just a different badge. The character of the brand remaining unchanged notwithstanding the rebadging, I feel it is a lazy take on the Indian customer's value proposition. Understandable if Toyota badged Suzuki cars are sold in a Toyota stronghold market where Suzuki is non existent.

Rebadged cars bring to my mind Scala/Pulse (which failed) and Rapid/Vento, but then the latter siblings at least share the same DNA of VAG

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

Need to see the larger picture here.

Toyota is likely to take over Suzuki in the longer run.
This is just the short ~ mid term strategy that we're currently looking at.

Globally, Suzuki (David) is small in front of the conglomerate Toyota (Goliath)
(while David wins only in the Indian market)

I have a feel that this strategic alliance is not just limited to model sharing and tech sharing...it's more of having Suzuki as an economical brand in India.

Remember when Toyota had planned to introduce the Daihatsu brand in India and pulled out when the partnership with Suzuki was announced in 2017.Feb..
(Daihatsu is also Toyota's low cost brand in the global market)

So, instead of rivaling Suzuki in India, Toyota (Japanese) I guess is thinking to take over

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

Although I think this partnership is a good idea and will completely bulldoze competition in India. However, I expect Toyota's Suzuki-based models to look different, including sheet metal tweaks in order to justify premium pricing, if they dont, it will be difficult for Toyota to make this partnership a success. Agreed the Toyota badge alone has quite value attached to it but come on, customers are now quite well-aware about badge engineering etc in our market.
