Re: Skoda in control of VW's product development for India; car based on MQB-A0-IN platform coming

Skoda Auto board visits India to define next phase of expansion.

The CEO visited India along with board members for the second time in close to a year's time. CEO Zellmer told employees, India will get more responsibilities on development and production.

- The board members discussed internal combustion engine products beyond India 2.5 (sub-4 metre SUV) and localisation of EVs in the country.

- Skoda has big plans for India and looks at adding more focus and responsibilities in the areas of research and development and production.

- The company is looking into an Enyaq EV that is already being tested and will hit the roads in 2024 in India.

-The Group is also talking for "potential cooperation partners" in India to build the electric business including Mahindra – who is in talks with component arms for sourcing

- Skoda Auto will be looking at utilising India as a "production hub" and exploring more export possibilities. It sees India as a key gateway to the Asean markets -starting with Vietnam, it would add more markets in the future.

This is great news. 4m SUV is a numbers game. Skoda/VW need more numbers selling every month. More numbers increases trust and helps in the long run.

I feel, sub 4 meter should have been there first in place of Kushaq/Slavia.
Global Fabia looks fantabulous and considering part sharing and volumes for a lower segment car, could have improved the value proposition, customer satisfaction and niggle-free experience. I hope this one bring more to the segment and consumers.

Will be a big volume seller for Skoda for sure. And that the base engine for any cheap VAG would be the 1.0l TSI is the cherry on cake!

(sigh) As a Toyota fanboi, hurts that VAG offers and is bullish on the affordable segments, while Toyota has given up in the sub 20 lakh segment. Irony being, it was VAG who was struggling with cost optimisation in India than Toyota a few years back.

C'mon. Even us enthusiasts may feel that the 1.5l TSI in a sub 4m would be an overkill, though if it happens then nothing like it.

Re: Skoda in control of VW's product development for India; car based on MQB-A0-IN platform coming

Skoda to play a big part in India in the group's next phase of development.

Klaus Zellmer, Skoda CEO:

Quote:
Could building the car outside of Europe keep costs down?

“We’re already building cars in India. We are now looking at the battery electric vehicle segment for India. In order to be competitive in India with a battery electric vehicle, you have to have a very price attractive and low cost option. Now that could be something that we could also see in Europe, part of that or the car itself, we don't know yet.

“This brings us back to the 20,000 Euro car, when I said it's all about the battery. It's also about other factors, so let's see. This is a core project for us this year to see how we will manage the transformation from ICE to electric in India. And I would say India plays a part; it’s the most price competitive market for us.”

Would the buyer care if a 20,000 Euro Skoda was made in India?

“I don't think so. If it's our quality, and even if they do know, you would always be able to learn about it. I think it's okay as long as the car fulfils our safety standards.”

Re: Skoda in control of VW's product development for India; car based on MQB-A0-IN platform coming

Skoda is likely to reveal its Global EV plans, making India the hub for low cost EV's.

- Battery likely to be localized in India
- Will export EVs to other markets

Quote:
LFP (lithium iron phosphate cells) technology is rapidly coming to the forefront, as they are very low in price, but at the same time have a poorer energy density. However, this should not be an obstacle in the case of urban electric cars.

Engineers at Škoda want to solve the problem of insufficient range by stacking one cell on top of another, which would ensure sufficient capacity with reasonable battery dimensions, which are necessary for a small car.

Skoda to announce its project 'India 2.5', will include its EV plans.

- The global management of Skoda is scheduled to travel to India later this month to announce the company’s plans and market expansion strategy.

- Compact SUV (based on Fabia) to be launched in March 2025. No VW model to mirror this compact SUV is planned.

- Annual volumes of 90k anticipated which includes domestic and exports.

- VW will go the EV route and Virtus could be the last ICE for India (provided country's EV are not stagnant)

Re: Skoda in control of VW's product development for India; car based on MQB-A0-IN platform coming

Interestingly, ACI says February 27 is for the compact SUV not the Enyaq.

Škoda likely to announce compact SUV plans on February 27 - Autocar India

Quote:
Skoda SUV will enjoy the lower GST 28 percent slab, a tax benefit given to ‘small cars’ with a length under 4 metres and petrol engines less than 1.2 litres. Hence, it’s likely that the baby Skoda compact SUV will be powered by only the 110hp 1-litre TSI and not the 1.5 TSI the other engine option used in the ‘India 2.0’ cars from VW and Skoda.
Quote:
Skoda’s compact SUV is expected to reach showrooms around March 2025, a good three years after the Slavia, the company’s last mass market product. The long gap is due to challenges with the commercial feasibility of the ‘India 2.5’ project which delayed the launch by almost a year.
