Is 'India 2.5' (a compact SUV) the next-step for VW India? Or will it jump straight to 'India 3.0' (EVs) ?

While it decides on its path ahead, Volkswagen will keep its portfolio fresh with a few CBU models.

Undecided yet but tilt is towards EV's.

We're trying to get our head around what’s the next step for us for India? Do we want to expand on that platform (MQB-A0-IN) or is it a step into electric vehicles?

With electrification seemingly gathering consumer interest in India at a fast pace, it’s likely that VW will go down the electric path rather than trying to play catch up in the mass ICE space. Till then, the brand is also exploring bringing in a limited number of CBU models.

While Volkswagen is yet to confirm its participation in the India 2.5 programme, the brand will be going ahead with its India 3.0 plan. The latter is all about electric mobility, which will cover both CBUs as well as locally built EVs.

The German automaker says it can accommodate small cars and small vans too, and that it would launch the small MEB-based electric hatch in Europe by 2025 at a cost of around €20,000 (Rs 16.5 lakh).

The India 2.0 strategy looks like not a winning one. They should have stuck to their strengths of build quality, fit & finish rather than trying to ape the Asian manufacturers. The problem was not lack of features, but service. Now with an average build quality and service, most of the existing VAG customers won’t be coming back for their purchases I feel.

The key mandate Arora ahead is to build a sustainable and profitable business model with India 2.5-3.0 plans, which will play a crucial role in electrification.

Alliance with Mahindra:

This association as of now covers parts and components that can be utilized. The Volkswagen Group has this great platform, MEB which can be used for multiple products and is proven globally.

Pity that for the bright spot in their sales worldwide, Skoda India is effectively a two model company now (spare the Kodiaq), with their legacy models, the Octavia and Superb having an end date.

And there is nothing in the horizon too except for the EV models which are most likely to be CBUs.

In Germany, Skoda’s sales dropped 3.8% to 100,700 cars during January-September 2022, in the Czech Republic sales dropped 18.7% to 51,200 cars, and in China sales dropped 31.2% to 36,300 cars. The biggest drop was in Russia, at 77.2%, from 72,600 cars to just 16,600 cars, because of the Russia-Ukraine War,. “But you cannot take away the fact that Skoda today offers some really good cars in India.”

Skoda Auto India is now testing the Enyaq electric SUV on Indian roads, which will be launched in the next financial year.

We will follow a top-down approach in electrification, just like our group brands — first importing electric cars, and then looking at how we can assemble those cars locally

Skoda India to focus more on EVs than hybrids

With an all-new compact SUV slated only by 2025, Skoda is planning at least three to five new product interventions in the coming 12 months to sustain the traction for the brand.

Apart from introducing the model year changes in Kushaq and Slavia, the company will be introducing the Enyaq EV, a new Superb, as well as some limited-edition models like the Octavia RS iV that are being explored

Although local production of the Superb and Octavia sedans is likely to be discontinued, the company will bring the models in as completely knocked down (CKD) units or completely built unit (CBU) imports to cater to the demand in those segments. Also, the company is expecting higher allocation for its top-of-the-line premium Kodiaq SUV in 2023, which will be able to capitalise on the strong demand in the high end market

The market like India is fast evolving towards electrification. In terms of investment, we prefer to move straight to EVs

So, Skoda is losing sales in China, the obvious reason is overall EV sales increase.

Jan-Sept 2022 overall vehicle sales in China increased by 4.4% Y-o-Y, in this 4.4% increase in sales New energy vehicle(NEV) sales increased by 110%, that's a negative growth for most ICE only vehicle manufacturers. Skoda Enyaq is not launched in China yet.
