Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

Looking at the reported FE of few petrol hatchbacks/Sedans here, I feel I'm better off

Endeavour 3.2

City FE: 7 - 8 kpl. I've extracted upto 8.8 kpl in peak traffic using tip tronic.
Highway: 9.5 - 10.5 kpl

Reason: ~2.4 tons kerb weight + 3.2 ltr engine + full time 4WD + AT

My i20 N Line DCT returns a princely fuel efficiency figure of 8.5-9.5 Kmpl. This is in Bangalore's stop-go traffic conditions.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

Great thread. Gives good insights on different cars in the market. I am always surprised when people say my this car gives 13 in city driving and what not. My humble Wagon R AT never went beyond 10.51 KM/L. The car was in great condition with only 21K kms on the odo. On highway it used to return ~ 19 KM/L. The car is sold now.

My current cars

2010 Honda Civic VAT gives 6.5 - 7 KM/L. This is in city with short runs ranging between 4-7 kms. On highways I have seen as high as 19 KM/L.

2020 Ecosport Petrol AT - Now this is what I call a fuel guzzler. It returns 6-7 in city with short runs of 4/7 kms. However what surprises me is it doesn’t give a good FE even on highway. Never seen going above 15. On the same stretch Civic easily manages 17-18 km/l. Ecosport is good 300 CC and one Cylinder less than Civic with an age difference of 10 years between two cars.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

Mahindra XUV300 Turbosport, 2023, 1.2lt 3Cyl TGDi, 6S MT : ~9 in Bangalore driven moderately hard, 12.5 on the highway driven hard, 15 on the highway being lazy (90-100kph). Interestingly, the avg fuel economy indicator doesn't indicate below 10.0kpl even when it returns much lower. Mahindra being super optimistic there

Ford Ikon 1.6, 2005, 1.6lt 4Cyl NA, 5S MT: 9-10 in the city. 14 on the highway.

Wagon R 2013, 1.0lt 3cyl NA, 5S MT : ~ 12 in the city, 18 on the highway. (Depends on how many seats are occupied )

This is a question for Hyundai. Their petrol from the 2010s are the worst guzzlers for the displacement available. Used to own a 1st gen i10, which won't yield anything more than 14 in the best of driving. The AT avatar gave 8-10 as a standard. The 4-speed i20 and Verna were equally bad

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

While everyone here is flexing their muscles with their turbo petrols and six cylinders, I can show you a third way to get a fuel guzzler. Its called the "overtyred but underpowered hatchback".

My 2012 Fabia 1.2 htp had 205 section tyres and fuel economy was dismal. 8-9 kpl in city for short journeys. Max I saw on the highway was a measly 13kpl.

My 2013 Brio had 195 section tyres on it with 16 inch rims. Made it look like a mini monster truck. Got 8-9 kpl in city for short journeys. Highway runs got you 14 if you drove like a senior citizen with no one else besides yourself in the car. I loved to rev the snot off of it. So I got about 10 kpl.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

I own two vintages and would not at all label them as gas guzzlers. They are from the era when petrol cost Re 0.53 p per litre (my 1955 car) and about Re 0.75 p per litre (my 1963 scooter).

My two other cars and two, two wheelers are all value for money and don't consume any excess fuel commensurate with their engine capacities and power outputs.

My Yamaha RX - 100 is from a later era when petrol was costing above Rs 9=90 per litre (1990) and loves to drink petrol like its peers. All RX - 100's are fuel thirsty. But for its connect with its rider, liveliness, for the soul it has and for its top class and unimpeachable reliability, needing very less maintenance, the fuel consumption can be fully overlooked. When I bought it, my friends would say Hero Honda delivers 60 kmpl plus and your bike delivers 38 kmpl.

My answer was :-

"Other bikes are commuters, are staid and have a body. My bike is lively, connects with the rider and has a soul."

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

Ahemmm!

I drive the MG Hector which has made such a bad name for itself in terms of fuel economy that it is a serious contender to take the crown here, and hence, it makes me an automatic qualifier to post a comment on this thread.

The numbers

For last 1 year of ownership:
Worst - 7kmpl
Best - 14kmpl
Average - 10kmpl

Mine is a Petrol CVT and coming from a small MT car, initially the FE hovered between 7-10kmpl in a mix of NCR traffic and Highway runs. Over the period of one year it has improved and now it is consistently giving me an average of 11kmpl. In heavy city traffic it still manages above 8kmpl.

How do I see it and feel about it

My erstwhile Hyundai Grand i10 Petrol MT consistently averaged above 15kmpl. So, a decline of ~35% in FE feels a little on the higher side specially with the increase in fuel prices post COVID-19.

But, there is brighter side which I factored in while making the purchase of new car last year - I was upgrading from a small hatchback to a proper big car and expected/accepted the fact that I would need to spend more on fuel and maintenance. The other thing going for me was that with the shift to work from home, my city drives had reduced significantly. So, while I used to cross 15000km yearly prior COVID-19, I have driven the Hector for 8500kms in last one year which is a little more than half the distance which I used to cover before COVID-19.

So, my yearly fuel expenses have remained more or less same as before while I got a bigger and better car and that's how I see it

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

Honda CR-V 2.4 4WD AT:

City: 5.5-6.5 Kmpl
Highway: 7-9 Kmpl

Reading the posts here, I don't feel too bad given the size of the car.

We should also have a post to highlight those cars that are excelling at FE (say >15 Kmpl).

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

My petrol Audi Q5, otherwise a great car, qualifies for being a gas guzzler.

5.75 kmpl, never even 6kmpl in city traffic of Bengaluru. Close to 6kmpl but yet slightly less. ECU tuning/RON 95 fuel had no effect.
Highway: 7.5 to 8 kmpl

Having said that, my driving style is definitely not conducive to FE. I never do crazy speeds but drive decently above 100kmph.

Sometimes, when accelerating, it shows instantaneous FE reading of 2kmpl for a decent amount of time which is jaw dropping at times.

My other one, Suzuki SX4 petrol, no big engine, still manages 9kmpl ONLY in city but due to the fact it is driven for very short distances in stop and go traffic.

Looking at some of the FEs quoted in the forum, I am tempted to buy new car(s) but hey, the cars are really expensive now-a-days.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

My 2022 i20 IVT, gives an average of 8 to 9 kmpl on a normal traffic day (by Bangalore standards) in the city. I see a lot of Hyundai 1.2 AT reported here. It is indeed a fuel guzzler for such a small engine.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

My 5 year old Ecosport Dragon 1.5 AT gives me fantastic mileage of about 6.5 kmpl in my usual bumper to bumper commute. Highway drives have never crossed 13kmpl even on excellent roads like Bangalore Tirupati.

And what do I have to show for it? Cringe worthy 14sec 0-100kmh times! Can't expect more from a 1.5NA with power figures similar to a City. To give it credit, it is supremely driveable in the city and has plenty of low end torque.

Something about the car's weight, TC setup and engine combo sucks fuel like anything.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

My 2009 Mitsubishi Cedia Spirit gives about 5.5-7kmpl in the city depending on the traffic and 9-11kmpl on the highways. That wonderful engine note from 2.0NA makes me forget the fuel consumption though. This is the only car in my garage that I drive with a heavy right foot too.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

My 2014 Hyundai Xcent 1.2 P. Hyundai cleverly omitted the FE reading on this one. But I can vouch this engine is a guzzler if driven in city stop and go conditions. This engine still does duty in Hyundai cars. Read Nios, i20 etc. Engine is butter smooth though. Super refined.

My Octavia 1.4 TSI surprises me both ways

Sometimes in city, its down to 8 kms to the litre

and sometimes on the highway...(see the pic)
