Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

Wow !

This thread is an eye opener. I was considering to buy some cars mentioned here.

2007 : 1998 Lincoln continental 4.8L V8 4 kmpl. Gas prices were cheap and I didn’t drive much either.

2010 : 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.5L. 8-9 kmpl in the city

2015-2020 : 2015 Audi S3 8- 11kmpl in city and 14 on long trips. Cheap fuel !

Present : 2023 Taigun 1.0 TSI AT Topline 9 kmpl in bumper to bumper traffic but up to 22 kmpl on highways. Each tank fill costs 5k.

Thankfully my all other cars give great mileage. 2014 Honda city D gives a city mileage of 22 kmpl and highway mileage of 25 - 35 kmpl. And 45 - 50 in case of hypermiling. I’m not kidding.
I am not able to makeup my mind to sell this car.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

There it is

Rapid DSG - 13+ Bangalore City traffic. Usage in city mostly

Xf 3.0 - 13 consistent on Highway, heavy right foot always. City should be 7-8 max

The winner, CRV 2.4 AWD - 6.5 in city, 9 Highway

Toyota Hilux - 8 in city, 9 Highway (right foot issues)

Got two gas guzzlers. My 1977 Trans Am gives 4.2 Km/Litre (if I drive carefully) Driving spiritedly in that car gets me around 3 Km/Litre. My 2019 Toyota pick up gives me 8.8 Km/Litre on average.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

I have a book describing the germination of ideas at Ford Motors for the Ford Mustang. The ideas were conceptualised and soon evolved to thereafter see the pony car getting launched in 1965 under the leadership of Lee Iaccoca.

The book has featured several images of the post war 1940's and 50's American cars, with nearly all of them having huge, chrome front grilles and bulbous bumpers with the car designers artistic abilities reigning supreme during that era.

And the catch line says :-

" all these cars by their looks appear fuel thirsty."

This benefits from two factors - the office commute having improved due to the BKC connector and diesel efficiency. Overall mileage over 50,000+ km is 8.8 kmpl with a best tank to tank mileage of 11.7 kmpl on a fast and smooth run between Belgaum and Bangalore on my South India tour a couple of years ago.
X3 20d numbers are surprisingly low. I get similar numbers on my X3 30i in a similarly bad Bangalore traffic and highway runs, thought diesel version will fare atleast 20% better than a petrol?

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

Last year I acquired a pre-owned Endeavour 3.2. I've started doing more roadtrips after that and my Ecosport at nearly 1,00,000 kms is now taking a bit of rest serving me duties in the city.

While the Ecosport is a wonderful car giving me 15+kmpl in the city and nearly 20-22kmpl on the highways, the Endeavour expectedly is a guzzler. It gives me around 8kmpl in the city and 10-11kmpl on the highways even with a bit of spirited driving, which I believe is very decent considering the engine and power figures.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

I will let the picture do the talking

2L naturally aspirated petrol Grand Vitara. Average was around 9.25 kmpl till few days back. After I got the fuel tank removed to fix fuel gauge issue due to rat bite, the average is reset. To be fair on my car, I did get 12kmpl avg when I did Del-Blr trip.
This car is exclusively for highway runs. To keep it in running condition, couple of times a week, I take it to nearby coffee shop which is 2km from my place. After returning home, I would have drank 10rs coffe and GV would have gulped 100rs petrol. Guilty as charged.

Our daily beater Tiago NRG AMT is a guzzler. Only fetches 8.5 to 9 kmpl in the city. Don't know what was I thinking when getting it.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

I'm surprised to learn small engines on small cars returning an FE of less than 10 Kmpl.

A decade or so ago, around the time when Honda CRVs, Accords and other 2+ litre engines were achieving monthly sales in double digits; the general perception ATT was that anytime above two litre would returned an FE of less than 10 Kmpl (Accord 2.4, 530d, Superb 3.0) but if it's a 2 or less, then expectations of FE were at least above 10 Kmpl.

I had a Passat 2.0 and even with bumper to bumper traffic, twice daily, it returned an FE between 11 and 12 Kmpl.

Are today's 1 litre engines more about cutting cost of manufacturing than FE? It is certainly not the impression I get from their advertisements.

2016 Subaru WRX CVT

The car was advertised with a combined average fuel efficiency rating of 10.8 km/L. Here's what I get,

City: ~8 km/L
This is where the car spends most of its time.

Motorways: 12+ km/L
The car returns 14 km/L when the cruise control is engaged (110-120 km/h).

Spirited runs/Track: ~5 km/L
AWD+Turbo+CVT+Sports mode = <300 Kms range with a 60L fuel tank.

I believe the downsized (i.e. 3 cylinder, ~1L, small turbo) engines offered good fuel efficiency only under standard test conditions. They fare badly under real-world conditions. One has to work the engine to be in the meaty power band and that hurt fuel efficiency.

I guess the Thar is not aerodynamic and building efficient petrol engines isn't Mahindra's area of expertise.

Our Ford Figo 1.5L Petrol AT returns ~9 km/L in the city. I wish it did better. It is not heavy or FTD.

I have owned a Fiesta 1.6. 5 km/L seems too low. It might be worthwhile to check your engine and clutch.

Off-topic:
Auto enthusiasts like us may give several reasons to justify the (low) fuel efficiency numbers. However, this is not sustainable. I think wherever possible, FTD ICE vehicles need to be for the weekend and we need more efficient options for the weekdays.

Re: Are you driving a fuel guzzler? Share your guzzler's FE numbers here

We're driving a Hyundai Creta 1.4 Turbo

In the City, the MID shows about 6-7kmpl depending on how heavy my right foot is. 8 is possible, if I go very light on the throttle.

On the Highway, about 10kmpl, sometimes 12 if I go exceedingly light on the throttle, and 14 if I also turn the Aircon off.

With spirited driving, and the liberal use of the Paddle Shifters, the FE falls off a cliff, ending up at around 4-5.5kmpl.

These figures are from the MID, I'm afraid that if I use Fuelio, my numbers will be far more depressing

Hyundai Verna 1.6 P AT.

City Mileage with heavy traffic - 8-9 kmpl
City Mileage with normal traffic - 9-10 kmpl
Highway Mileage - 14-16 kmpl.

Only reason for the low figure is the TC gearbox.
