NO . It has been clearly stated by the government that the cut is only for NON-petroleum products

You might have to wait for the next reduction in petrol prices.

Price in US is now $1.65 a gal. The duties/taxes in India are close to 50% now in that case.

That was the official figure for US average (just like in India, US prices vary across states). US prices have a low tax component (I think 10.5% though it has been increased a bit recently). At their peak, the average was around US$4/gallon (~Rs. 50/l with tax of 10.5%). Regardless of what the Govt. says, it is still making huge profits on petrol (and a lot less on diesel). The taxes go to the Govt/states from which it funds underrecoveries. So it is an accounting treatment but this policy distorts market signals. Of course taxes are required to discourage consumption of scarce resource (see UK prices), but even now petrol car owners like me are subsidising diesel cars like Skoda and call centre operators. Of course the kerosene scam is there for all to see.

Don't be surprised it it come's, as the change which has come (Rs. 5, and Rs. 2) is a political move; they will further reduce the rates as the center election comes near.

Exactly they would time it with the Polls. The fuel prices can go down further by 10 bucks for petrol if the crude prices keep falling.
