Chandigarh

Nice thread here.
I thought I could contribute my 2 cents about Chandigarh.
Being a Union Territory, this small city has the whole CH for itself.
In pre 1990s era, the series used were
CH XXXX
CHA XXXX and so on..

And The government owned vehicles got CHG XXXX

Then in the 1990s started
CH 01 XXXX
CH 01 A XXXX

Similarly, all government owned vehicles got CH 01 G XXXX

All Taxis (four wheelers) were given CH 02 XXXX

After CH 01 series got filled up, CH 03 was started in early 1999.
All vehicles, whether 2 wheelers, Autos, private cars or company owned cars were registered under these series.

Some numbers that were never allotted were

CH 01 I
CH 01 O
CH 03 G
CH 03 I
CH 03 O

The I and O were never given probably because I would confuse with the number 1 and O would confuse with the number 0.

After filling up of CH 03, CH 04 started again for the non govt vehicles.

It went upto CH 04 J and suddenly they decided to change the format to
CH 01 AA XXXX last year.

Meanwhile for Government owned vehicles, after filling up CH 01 G, they went to CH 01 G1 XXXX

And after the introduction of radio cabs, the series is as follows

CH 02 A is for radio Taxis

CH 02 C is for radio Autos.

Add to that the UT administration auctions VIP numbers and someone got the latest one CH 01 AC 0001 by blowing up 10 lacs for his fortuner last week..

Sugam,
Very interesting about the Chandigarh numbers. I have two questions please.
I have a photo of CGA 5063 (on a vehicle) that has always been said to be Chandigarh. Do you think that is correct?

Did they issue CH01, CH02 and CH03 (see photo) without any serial letters before they started CH01A, CH02A, CH03A? Or is the CH03 a made up number (fake)?
Cheers
Cedric

Hi Cedric

About CGA, I'm not very sure. I don't remember seeing anything except CHA CHB etc on the ancient series. I could be wrong.

And yes CH 01 XXXX CH 02 XXXX and CH 03 XXXX were issued before starting the use of serial letters in the series.
This number in the picture was most probably given out in late 1998 or early 1999.

It must be "HR" 33 XX ZZZZ with the "I-" fallen off. Mostly the letters and numbers are made of stickers and they tend to peel off. Similarly badly painted letters and numbers also peels off.

Over the last few years many strange Indian, Andaman Nicobar, Lakshadeep and Jammu Kashmir plates have been sold on Ebay. All are unused and are in various languages. Some are for private vehicles, some commercial and some for motorcycles. I am pretty sure that some of the vehicle class letters are wrong for the type of plate it is.
I am wondering if anyone has ever seen any of this design of plate actually in use on a vehicle on the roads of India, anywhere. Or are they just flight of fancy at some plate shop somewhere? Maybe in Tamil Nadu?
Many thanks
Cedric
FYI,
99.99% of Tamilians cannot read the letters written in Tamil 'numbers', which is not in common use. it actually reads as Tamil Numbers
Its not thought in schools. If you are a Tamil Pandit probabaly you might know this.

hey,

I totally agree with you about 'I-' fallen out. But; how can it fall out on both plates? and we were 7 of us there who saw this and were left wondering about the reg plates. Should have clicked its pic the first time only.

In fact i saw the same car again yesterday at the same spot but it was raining and hence couldn't get a pic of the same. I will try and get its pic as soon as i c it again.

Re: Indian States Registration Number Identification

There is an App in Android market it goes by the name "India Number Plate" its a required one for those who are quite obsessed with the Number plates.

I do have it in my phone and I do surprise my friends sometimes by saying from which district they registered thier vehicles. Its really a handy app..

Does anyone have it.

Re: Indian States Registration Number Identification

searchingheaven,
I have a list of all the RTOs in India but I want to know when the 'new' codes in Delhi were introduced. Wiki doesn't say (nor anywhere else I can find on the web).
Cheers

Re: Indian States Registration Number Identification

avishar,
There are a few companies in Europe and America that will make any number on any countries' base you want. They are quite expensive by the time you ship them also but I would think the German West Bengal plate probably came from one of them. I guess he has it on a German car maybe?
The plate was made on a German machine from the dies.
I have information about some of the companies on www.sabinesnubbing.co.uk which is my website about fake and sample number plates for collectors.
Cheers
