roopgill,
This is Cedric here from Dubai. I am the one studying Indian registration numbers.
From my records, in the 1939 series of numbers MYB was for Bangalore ditrict (as opposed to city MYC) but in the 1947 series MYa to MYz was for Mysore so Iguess it would have been about 1949ish. Not much help I know and typical of the confused situation that existed pre-partition!

By the way, a while ago on your website, you posted pictures of an old American car being dragged out of a building and put on a transporter. It seems to be JSJ 1747 which is an unknown registration for me. Do you know the date of the car or registration or who I can ask about it?

mituadas,
I am afraid the best I can do with WMM is say mid to late 1960s. Is it on a motobike by any chance? That makes it more uncertain still (anytime in the 1960s) as I THINK WMM was reserved for bikes. Let me know please.

Cheers
Cedric

The 01 code is not always used for the state capital as these posts suggest. For example, AP - 01 in Andhra Pradesh is used for Adilabad / Mancherial / Nirmal and in Madhya Pradesh, MP -01 is used as 'Horourable Governor's Vehicle' !

Hehe, In Meghalaya, it works a little differently.

ML is the state Code.

ML-01 is the for the state government cars, ML-01-0001 being the Chief Minister!
ML-02 is for Meghalaya Police.
ML-03 is for Meghalaya Transport Corporation (Believe it or not!)
ML-04 is for Jowai
ML-05 is for Shillong (The Capital)

Interestingly, before the computerised number system came into play

MLG was for the government.
MLP for the Police
MTC for the Transport Corp
MLK for Shillong ( The K stood for Khasi Hills (District)

I bet no other state has such an interesting number thing!

Cheers

HR 51 is Faridabad..

In West Bengal..
WB 01 is for two wheelers(Kolkata)
WB 06 is for private four wheelers(Kolkata)..previously WB 02
WB 03,WB 04 for commercial vehicles(Kolkata)

In WB commercial vehicles have a different registartion number plates..
For example,
WB 39 commercial vehicles(Durgapur)
WB 40 private vehicles-two/four wheelers(Durgapur)

WB 37 commercial vehicles(Asansol)
WB 38 private vehicles-two/four wheelers(Asansol)
and so on....

It is likely that the plate reads USJ 1749 rather than JSJ. A piece of the cast "U" may have broken off, it has been known to happen. USJ would have been Uttar Pradesh.

Lovely picture!

Weird Registration Number

Saw a black Honda city NHC with a weird registration number ( GJW 1 07 B XXXX ) near vidhansoudha(Bangalore).

Any idea about the series GJW ??
I don’t think it is a temp registration as the car was looking pretty old (2-3 years)

What sort of a number is that? GJW?? AFAIK, Gujarat is GJ! And, there cannot be two different numbers after the state code, it should be number and then alphabet right?
