Andhra Pradesh registration numbers are allotted by the alphabatical series of the name of the district.

AP 01 Adilabad
AP 02 Anantapur
AP 03 Chittore
AP 04 Cudappah - now spelt as Kadapa
AP 05 East Godavari
AP 06 Not allotted / reserve series of EG, probably
AP 07 Guntur
AP 08 Reserve for Guntur, probably
AP 09, 10, 11, 12, 13 - Hyderabad
AP 14 Reserve for HYderabad, probably
AP 15 Karimnagar
AP 16 Krishna
AP 17, 18, 19 - NOT ALLOTTED/ RESERVE FOR KRISHNA, probably
AP 20 Khammam
AP 21 Kurnool
AP 22 Mahbubnagar
AP 23 Medak
AP 24 Nalgonda
AP 25 Nizamabad
AP 26 Nellore
AP 27 Prakasam
AP 28 Ranga Reddy
AP 29 Ranga Reddy
AP 30 Srikakulam
AP 31 Vijayanagaram
AP 32 Visakhapatnam
AP 33 DO
AP 34 DO
AP 35 DO
AP 36 Warangal
AP 37 West Godavari

I am not too sure about Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram and Viskhapatnam districts. Series for the remaining districts are correct.

APSRTC had AAZ, AEZ and now AP 9 Z, AP 10 Z, AP 11 Z, AP 28 Z

AP Police series is AP 9P ....

Taxi series is T, U V W, X, Y TU, TV and so on.

I wonder why the state has only 37 for its 23 districts whereas many far smaller states have more series.

I am not very current with the scene in Kerala now since I am living out of state for the last 20 years. I think the registration series changed to the new format sometime in 1989.

Guess!

Folks,
I was on the move since last 2 days within the country and came across vehicles bearing registration number as GL-**-****
Food for thought for fellow bhp-ians here - any takes on what GL stands for?
GL has a pretty interesting story which I would share unless someone else puts it up for all of us

Let me make a wild guess -- did your travels take you to Darjeeling by any chance?

Bull's Eye folks!
yes Edzel and Alec, you guys are correct - I had gone to a place called as Takdah between Darjeeling and Gangtok. On my way, I came across vehicles having such number plates.
Curiosity made me check with my cabbie who enlightened me with the fact that the seperatists in northern WB are demanding for a seperate state of Gorkhland and are forcibly replacing WB with GL on number plates of vehicles plying in the region! Charges for this forcible conversion (painting WB with GL) are anything between 130 to 200 rupees.
Talk about governance

Thanks,
Fountainheader,
I just noticed these questions of yours. I have been making a study of Indian registration numbers and think I can answer these for you.

1. UDF nnnnn is an Uttar Pradesh temporary number. AS far as I understand it can be any two letters after U and I guess they are on UEx nnnnn by now.
2. Delhi has reserved letters for different classes of vehicle. The ones I know are....
A Ambulance - but may include all emergency vehicles
C car
F car - but probably company owned
G large commercial vehicle
L large commercial vehicle
P bus and coach
R motorized tricycles
S motorbikes
T taxis
V school buses and minibus type taxis
Y taxis but a different class - chauffer driven cars maybe
Z self drive rental I think

3. Rajasthan has numbers like RJ14 7C1234 where C is for cars and the 7 is just a serial extender. Other states have gone from C to CA, CB, CD, etc but RJ decided on a serial number instead in about 2000 I think.

Now for my questions....
Can someone help me with improving on my Delhi list and comment on what I have written above please?
Also, does anyone know if I am right that the systems used in Maharashtra vary from district to district as far as reserved letters and what they are for and that some districts don't have reserved letters at all?
Happy New Year to all
