This is not exciting, given Toyota's leadership and large number of modern cars they have this looks like it is going through the motions.

The hatch back buyer in India today is totally spoilt for choice with Swift, i10, i20, Figo, Polo, Punto, Vista and unless Toyota is angling for a price war I don't see how this will work.

Most of the hatchbacks now are modern and feature rich with international models here, how will these 2 outdated before launch compete? India is not a large enough hatchback market to justify a car being designed solely for India, usually that is a excuse to pass off a shoddy below standard product which will not be accepted in other markets, unfortunately this kind of thing is not going to work anymore because of competition.

People talk about the Qualis but that was launching at a totally different time in a segment with different needs than a personal car buyer and with little competition at the time. The hatchback market today is dramatically transformed. All i can say is best of luck to Toyota.

Interesting fight !!

It would be very interesting to see how Toyata and Maruti fight for the market share. Not to forget Tata , with its Manza.IMO much will depend on the diesel engine availability, competitive price, features, overall quality and the interior space offered by the Toyota cars.If Toyota manages to squeeze all these in its cars, it would be tough for the Swift twins to retain their market share.Needless to say, the waiting period would vanish.
Otherwise, it would be tough for Toyota.
Who ever wins, it would be the customer who would have the last laugh !!

Toyota's target is mentioned as swift/dzire twins.
Price will be in the same ballpark, as claimed by TKML in some Indian automobile blogs (search for it and you will get the quote), and the company is claiming to be "15 percent more fuel efficient" than the aforementioned competition.

Like Toyota targeted Tata Sumo with its horrible looking qualis in 2000 and knocked off its perch from bestselling status, it seems that Toyota is poised to knock the swift/dzire stratght of their perches when these cars get launched this late fall season.

The big questions:
  • how will maruti react?
  • can the ethios dent the maruti's profit making model lines?
  • how will the Indian public, read aam janta react to it?
  • price and reliability and TCO?
I am eagerly looking forward to the answers and seems that the ethios VS swift/dzire battle will be a swift fight that I will surely keeping an eye on with great dzire.
  1. When the qualis came, there wasn't a genuine comfortable (as car to drive and travel) and reliable personal use 7+people carrier. The qualis was a revolutionary product.
  2. Times have changed and there's no dearth of offerings in B and C segments. Market has matured and so has the consumer. And manufactures are hot on their heels to keep their sales numbers grow. Noone is caught napping here. So trying to replicate the Qualis story as it is isn't the best option.
  3. And I hope they don't consider the Swift/Dzire as their only competition and decimate the others. As a matter of fact, their benchmark should be the 2011 Swift if at all.
Common Toyota! You are capable of more.

See the case of punto.
Its virtues and the italian blah blah are discussed only in team bhp and automags.
It is a good product.
It is not perceived as a good package by the public, may be expense, lack of power or unreliable ***.

I think a better "package" will win.
Like the TG has commented in its issue this month, the etios design will be liked by none but the car will be hated by none.

The better package will win

Spotted : Hatch @ Chennai with logo masked. What car is this ?

Today enroute to work around 9AM and waiting at the Teynampet signal when a little ahead of me I see a white hatch with the manufacturer logos masked and KA-Temp plates.

Clicked these snaps.

Overtook it near Nandanam signal to check out the front - logos masked at front also. No logos on wheels either. Could not take snap from front.

Car looks quite bold at the rear.

Anyone knows what car this could be ?

Ahhh, the Toyota Etios!! But why would a company mask it's product after it was available for public exhibition at the Delhi Auto Show?

I like the last pic in the set; it's got an S-class Mercedes, a Mitsubishi Cedia followed by the Etios... Following the path of two excellent cars, is that a sign of things to come?
