In the early days of the C-Segment, the Ikon was a runaway market leader with the Accent trailing by a margin. Similarly, the Matiz was a hit compared to the Santro.

However, after the first year or two it was apparent that Hyundai had stolen a march over both rather quietly. I think they consolidate, stabilize and then quietly take the market.

At that time, Hyundai was new entrant in the market, while Ford already was very much here and was an established brand. There were (and there still are) lot of apprehensions about Korean cars, so Hyundai started slow and then consolidated. Earlier Santro used to look plain ugly, which is somewhat accepted look now.

However, now 6-7 years down the line, Hyundai is known to provide VFM cars with good service backup, whereas Ford competes with Fiat for *** credibility. Considering all this, Verna should have been runaway hit.

Anyway, if horror stories about maintenance/poor *** with Fiestas start trickling in market in an year or two, it can still lose to Verna.

Here is why the Verna is trailing the Fiesta:

1. The Fiesta does have a value priced 1.4. And from what I hear, they are very popular.

2. The Fiesta diesel has proven very popular due to its refinement and astounding fuel efficiency. Of course, IMHO the Verna CRDi unit rocks but whos to change market perceptions of a well-accepted product?

68% of the Fiesta's sales came from the diesel until a couple of months back. Ford expects the least it will go down to is 60%.

Also GTO, do let know if you need any help in getting the SIAM numbers published on the forum.

Lite the NHC earlier and the Fiesta Diesel now has proven, majority of Indians care two hoots about performance. All tehy want is a refined and fuel efficient car. Any company that can provide this will laugh all the way to the bank! how else can you explain honda charging 8L for the city and still having an overflowing order book!

RIGHT. Take for that matter , the AVEO. great looks, comfortable spacious interiors, but loses out in refinement and fe. FIESTA outscores AVEO, in he last 2 parameters.

I feel Hyundai needs to do some kind of rethinking to the Verna. The car is definitely a good one.

I've heard from the Ford showroom guys that 1.4 is having very poor demand mainly due to the very poor mileage !!!

All Honda numbers just 3521? Thats bad for Honda. Price hike has affected the sales. Wonder if Fiesta has made a dent in Honda numbers.

That's the key.

Q4 of FY06 was bad. We saw single digit growth then. So 81% for GM doesn't necessarily mean they are having a good time.

Toyota sells 6600 units in March (1,083 units of corolla, 5411 of Innova

Corolla propels Toyota to record
[ 3 Apr, 2007 0039hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

BANGALORE: Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has posted a record breaking performance in March 2007, crossing sales of 6,600 units in a month for the first time.

The Corolla has come back with a strong performance in March attracting customers across segments. TKM has also put to rest all rumours of a new Corolla being launched.

"The surge in Corolla sales is an indication that customers are seeing value in ride comfort and long term reliability of the Corolla," said A Toyoshima, managing director, TKM.

TKM sold 1,083 units of the Corolla, 5,411 units of the Innova, and 197 units of the imported vehicles Camry and Prado Land cruiser.

TKM said there are no plans to launch a new Corolla in India this year. The Corolla is expected to sell 8,000 units this year in India.

The Toyota Corolla has attracted customers from across India. "The customers have noticed that the Corolla offers the most luxurious passenger seats and the best performance through the VVTi engine. The Corolla owner also enjoys peace of mind through the 3 year or one lakh kilometre warranty, not available in its competitors," said Toyoshima.

The Corolla, which debuted in 1966 in Japan, is a best-seller in over 140 countries and regions, and has created automobile history with worldwide sales crossing 32 million.
