7. laura/Superb sharply up. What's up.
The Laura Ambient was introduced end Oct and with one month of selling the numbers must have kicked in Dec. Just goes to show the importance of price point..It should tell the management, that they should reconsider their pricing (including spares and A.S.S) and they can be a real force in India, especially with the other vendors not having good diesel options..

That looks like 986 to me. They've also sold 0 Elantras and 28 Sonata Emberas.
What's happening to Hyundai? Anyways, Dec is always a lean month.

Some more interesting facts about Dec 2007:
1. Elantra was not produced in 2007, so it has taken Hyundai 11 months to finally clear off its stock.
2. Grand Vitara sold a grand total of 15 in 12/07.
3. Skoda Fabia sales in 12/07?. Who bought it?. I know people say it would have gone to dealers, but is that the correct way to report sales or when actual users buy it. Looks like GM's practice to me, and makes us doubt entire Skoda's numbers, especially the sharp rise in Laura and Octavia numbers. Dealer sales does not equal actual sales, as the Detroit 3 will tell you.
4. Verna+Accent only 986 in 12/07, which is up from 942 in 12/06 (comparable months).
5. The largest car seller is still Maruti, followed by Hyundai, Tata, M&M, Honda, GM, Toyota, and Ford. I read GM bragging that they have overtaken Toyota.
6. Fiesta dead or declining? It declined sharply in 11/07 and is going down now.
5. Yes, only 14 BMW 3 series sold in 12/07.

Man, what a totally unpredictable month. There are just too many unanswered questions after looking at the December numbers.

1. It is obvious that Skoda is including Fabia dealership despatches as a sale. Agreed with Vasudeva.

2. 800 sales up by 27%. The biggest gain for a hatch. What gives?

3. Big blow to Hyundai with Verna / Accent sales down by a whopping 64% compared to November!

4. Logan sales lowest yet, at 1504 cars. On the other hand, a 3.6% monthly decline is the lowest in the segment.

5. Whatever happened to BMW! The 3 series has fallen flat with a 90% fall in sales....from a 109 cars to only 14. Any news of a delivery problem, or is this the effect of the new C Class? I presume its the former (or some other BMW specific problem). On the other hand, BMW 5 series sales are double!

7. CRV crashes from 264 to 64 cars only!

8. Skoda Superb, from 36 to 152?

9. X5 (or X3) is in demand! Second best-selling car for BMW with 55 sold in a month.

Going thru 12/07 and 11/07 production, some interesting `observations':
1. No Petra production during 4/07-12/07, so old Petro stock being sold: Petra sold 2 in 12/07.
2. GM is clearing old Aveo stock. Prodn of 644 and 486 in 11/07 and 12/07. Sales of 576 and 601 in 11/07.
3. Hyundai Accet/Verna prodn of 3645 in 12/07, but sales of 986 in 12/07. Exports of 1131 in 12/07. Does that mean substantial old year 2007 stock with dealers. Can potential buyers bargain for huge discounts if they want these models.
4. Something going on with GM Optra. Prodn down from 964 in 11/07 to 109 in 12/07. Sales up from 557 to 822. Overall prodn during Apr-Dec of 5328 but sales of 4771.
5. Toyota Corolla prodn less than sales in 11/07 and 12/07. Does that mean little 2007 stock wiht dealers/company (last year I got extra 50K for buying a 2006 production in 3/07). Apr-Dec prodn is 4530 but sales of 4539. Same is the story with Civic. Apr-Dec prodn 12847, sales 11885. No wonder Toyota and Honda are profitable worldwide. Match prodn with anticipated sales.
6. Old 2007 stock of Fusion/Fiesta with dealers not likely: Production of 2479 and 1321 in 11/07 and 12/07. Sales including exports of 2154 and 2004.
7. Hyundai is liquidating a lot of old Sonata stock: Prodn of 14 and 10 in 11/07 and 12/07, but sales of 34 and 28.
8. For higher end cars like Merc, BMW, difficult to come to any conclusion since they might be imported/CBUs.
9. Old Logan production being liquidated. M&M clearly overstated demand.

But a discount offered by a Skoda showroom employee takes the cake. When asked about existing offers on last year’s models, she replied, “Sir, have you seen the new car launched by Skoda? It is called the Fabia.” But do you have a 2007 model? “Just a second sir, I think we have. Let me just check.” So, when carmakers and dealers are so willing, why wait? Bite the bait! You might just find yourself behind the steering wheel of a nice car and grinning all the way to the bank.

i10 joins the party. City under pressure!

Autocar India January edition has these figures-

1. Maruti Suzuki Alto- 22,784
2. Maruti Suzuki WagonR- 11,815
3. TATA Indica- 10,488

4. Hyundai Santro- 7,821
5. Maruti Suzuki Swift- 7,321
6. Hyundai i10- 7,300

7. Maruti Suzuki Omni- 7,241
8. Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo- 5,721
9. Maruti Suzuki 800- 5,653
10. Mahindra Bolero- 4,762

Interestingly-
  • i10 sales has pulled down Santro. Rest remains almost unaffected.
  • i10 can now be considered a sucess.
  • SX4 sold 3135 units compared to 2468 city. City remains beaten.
  • Logan sold 1560 units while fiesta sold an even lesser 1475 units only. Verna is even below that mark. Wonder whats happening to mid-size diesel segment!

Blue and purple lines in my chart posted earlier should give you a picture, though in case of Maruti it includes both SX4 and Esteem. However the fact remains that, since the launch of SX4, Maruti has been consistently ahead of Honda.

The year end is generally a dull period, and so i would assume sales and purchases are low. I had been to the Cauvery Ford showroom last Sunday, and the usually busy showroom was empty, and many of their staff as well were on leave. When i asked about the same, was told that the fresh batch of cars for 2008 havent arrived, and so they arent pushing sales now. Notably, the showroom didnt have even a single Fusion or Ikon on display.

Hyundai, GM, Honda clock 30-50% growth, Maruti up 4% in Jan 08.

Hyundai recorded 41% growth over Jan 07 mainly due to the launch of i10.
GM recorded 46% over last year.
Skoda up 50%, Fabia sells 1432 units since launch in Dec 07.
Honda records 29% growth. NHC: 5901, Civic: 1651, Accord: 46, CRV: 269 in Jan 08.
