Well, in my company new grads splurge 40k on cars. Ask for a huge joining bonus and get as much relocation as you can.

This is absolutely true. A fresh grad who was working under my supervision as an intern happened to get an offer from our Client. $52k is what he got as a joining bonus and relocation charges. All he had to do is to relocate from Chicago to Milwaukee with a pair of bags which he neatly tucked in my car's boot. The next thing which he did was to buy a brand new 2015 Camaro. One needs to be smart enough and this is the place for such people. I heard that he demanded way more than what he got

Review of my radar detector: Escort 9500ix.

I am a satisfied pony! Couple of folks i know organised a super car drive yesterday. Anybody with any car could basically come so we had like a LOT of Subarus and Mustangs in the mix with 1 Lamborgini Aventador, one Maserati, couple of Corvettes, Acura NSX, couple of M series Beemers, one 911. This drive was on facebook so i believe the cops knew we were coming.

The plan was to head out at 10 through this curvy road to a town about 150 miles away and come back in a shorter route of 90 miles after lunch.

On the way up the drive was perfect on the highway with all doing traffic speeds. Once we got off the highway the road was two laned and a limit of 45. The entire route was done pretty quick with no incident.

We reached this T-junction with a stop sign. As soon as i reach the sign and stopped the detector began chirping. I looked left to see a cop at a distance. I moved with caution and noticed the cars behind me just ignore the sign as there was no traffic. It was a easy trap for the cop. He just came by and caught the first car at this junction! Lucky day nailing a Maserati.

On the way back from lunch we left early. There was like 10 cops on this isolated stretch of road.

My takeaways from this:
Be sensible. Insane speeds can get you trapped or killed. Be in your limits.
The detector is just a aid and not fool proof. The nut behind the wheel is the brain. Do not depend on this always.
Your detector will chirp only when the detector is pointed at your direction. If the cop is sitting on the opposite lane it wont detect but he will see you drive by.

Worth the investment! Yep.

You could check online? Man, New Hampshire DMV is still in the stone ages. I had to fill a paper form with date-location preferences and wait for their response in the mail to find out what slot i got!!

Yep, actually its not even at DMV site, the courses are run by approved authorities, I booked from Renj

Congrats, good to hear that this thing worked as expected.
As per the info I have, radar detectors are legal for passenger vehicles in all states withing the US with Virginia & Washington DC being the exceptions. They are deemed illegal in commercial vehicles. Is this true?
Can they be used in bikes as well or are they exclusively for cars?
Can they mounted only on the car's windshield? California allows to have one in the car but it is illegal to mount it on the windshield. That said, if I have it sit somewhere in the center console, will it perform the same way as it would when mounted on the windshield?

You are right on the states where it is legal.

Commercial vehicles sometimes use jammers but i am not 100% sure on the usage there.

They can be mounted on motorcycles but, you would need to design a way to mount this on your bike as well as get a good power source for the same. I have seen a lot of bikes which do have this. Some have a unique way to get the notification.

I didnt know that rule in california. My detector specifically tells to mount in on the car windshield but i have seen some detectors being mounted on the sun shade too. This would not reduce performance by quite a lot.

Also if you do want to get one, get the detector with gps enabled in it. Its costs about 100 more than the regular but will prevent you from getting false alarms.

Need some help here in getting a new FOB key made. I just got a 2012 Camry LE and I got a single electronic FOB and one normal key (without any electronics). I want to get another FOB made for my car.
Can anyone suggest me the best and cheapest way to get this done ?
I want to avoid Toyota dealer since they will rip me off with their charges.
From whatever I have read online till now, this is what I can do...

Get the blank electronic FOB from ebay for like $30 or so.
Go to local hardware store like ACE Hardware or some good locksmith who can cut the key for me.
Program the key myself to make it work my car or tell the store to do that for me.

Is this how it works ?
Also since I have just one FOB, will the above method work for me ? Please suggest.

Usually it is the dealer who sells you the car who is responsible for providing both sets of keys. Unless it was a private party sale, of course.

I bought the car used from a dealer but it is not really like those big dealers with big stores and all. It is a small time dealer. He gave one FOB and one manual key.
So I will need to get the new key. I am yet to contact a Toyota dealer. I will do that today mostly. Nearest Toyota dealership is 45 Miles away. I don't really stay in a big city here.

I had got my first car from a similar small time dealer and guess what; He just had a single key (no FOB for auto lock) for the civic. I ended up ordering it online for 35 bucks followed the manual steps and voila it was done.

I did not bother to go through the hassle to get a spare one. If you want to via a cheaper route I think Ebay is your best bet.

I have come across a 2007 Camry which has 110,000 miles on the odo. The dealer is quoting around $8K for the same which I'm negotiating. The car has a clean carfax report, new tires, new battery and all the fluids changed. Took a friend along, TDed the car and found that it's in great condition. Inspected the car closely and didn't find anything suspicious. It was owned by a single person. The interiors are well maintained. Has a few minute scratches here and there on the body which is normal. What's a good price for this car?
