Put in the Ziza LED's today. Am feeling a little disappointed as the residual current is still present in the interior bulbs, the registration plate lights now throw an error intermittently a small change from the always on 'bulb out' light on the dash
I was gonna get the same thing but figured i'll hold off for a little bit. Do you know any license plate bulb replacement that won't throw out error ?
Took delivery of the car couple days back and i put in the led drls. Looks wicked cool!

Just an question , is this the same type of engine in a different state of tune that does duty on the A4 and even A6 now ?
Hi MadHawk, Congratulations on the delivery! You are in for the time of your life behind the steering wheel of your baby.

The chrome strip can be found on ebay.com to style your grill and under window strip - example Chrome Strip before you order just make sure the Breadth/Thickness is right for the areas you want it put on and that you have adequate length. As a brand I would recommend any with 3M adhesive strips.

LED DRL's - I was not aware that the TL does not come with DRL's. That's just cheap on VW's part, I mean it probably costs more money to maintain separate lines/part numbers for HL units than to just sell all models with one unit. IMHO the simplest thing to do would be to swap out the headlight assemblies right now, this will save you some money too as you should get a great exchange price on your brand new TL units. Don't mount external LED strips, they look cheap, could encourage vandalism of your car when parked by the roadside and could probably short-out in the rains. One never knows.

Engine - Yes, on the A4 - not sure about the A6 haven't looked into it.

Congratulations Reventon, now there are two reviews with pics that we can all look forward too. Hurry up

Let me look up some more LED companies and I will let you know what you could possibly order. Also this will give me some time to check if they bulbs in my car do in fact settle down - as I said its not a constant error I'm getting with the ECS kit, the error comes and goes.

Yes indeed. Yesterday noon, I was behind a black Ikon 1.6 Nxt and he had the taillights smoked. God, it was very difficult, especially with him braking late and both of us were doing good speeds.

I would not recommend it either, but of course your choice.

Could have been an amateur 'Paint' job! And yes I agree if not done right rather dangerous to all on road. I wouldn't recommend neither use any old paint to just go and darken taillights as I wouldn't run the same intensity bulbs behind tinted units. There's doing it right and then there's 'Posing'!

Dekay thank you for your kind wishes. I will get down to putting up an ownership thread very soon and my experience with VW and the anguish I had to go through once the dealer refused delivery till March after commiting a 2011 delivery. I have upgraded the rubber to Michelin Primacy LC today with Nitrogen , Kagu 3D mats ( once again thanks to the forum members), Sunfilm from LLumar and reverse parking sensors from RD ( which I am regretting as the damn things are not effective at all compared to AutoCop).

Ayedongivadamn ( love your handle ) : I agree with your views and will look up the badging options as suggested .Also I was not aware of the chrome strip and will search ebay for the same.Thank you for that. Like someone said earlier you seem to be the Go To person for anything on the New Jetta.

VB-San :The GTI badge was an impulsive buy on ebay as the price was tempting ( 200 Rs) .

The LED's I had in mind even before I bought the car but will now wait as I dont want an angry MFD for now. I was really disappointed that the TL does not have a DRL bulb housing . Why would VW do that therefore thought of the standalone DRL's on the front air dam but too scared of the wiring et al currently.
This is seriously shocking!! I didn't know that the Trendline doesn't come with DRL's. I was told by the VW guys that the Trendline DOES come with DRL's. In fact, I was told that the Jetta comes with DRL's as standard across all variants. I don't know how many more features they might have killed in the Trendline. I for one, was very serious regarding the Trendline and was considering it as my next buy but here I am really confused.

Anyways, what are you planning to do now?

PS - Eagerly awaiting your ownership thread MadHawk!

Thanks. I am working on the review. So far i have done about 200kms in the 4 days i have had it. I m taking it for a slightly "longish" drive (~250km) tomorrow. I wanted to wait until after that to put it up.

If you can, do upgrade to Comfort line. It is well worth the extra money you put in. There is a huge difference in features between TL and CL but between CL and HL, its not that much. Without the chrome and wood inserts in TL, even the interior looks cheap. Plus, you don't even get a rear hand rest, among many other things.

Congrats on your buy Madhawk.. Am sure you'll have fun with your new acquisition. Waiting for your ownership review

The same engine does duty on - Skoda Laura (in different states of tune for MT & AT), Superb, Passat (again in a different tune state), A4 & A6 (similar tune as Passat).

Since we are talking here about headlamp/ LED mods....

I just saw the Hybrid Jetta commercial today. Man she has some sick headlamps! The DRLs are beautiful, something which VW should have given us in the first place! They are similar to those found on the Passat already.

Coming to the technical part. The whole assembly, if sourced from somewhere would be CANBUS compliant. However, since the power drawn would be different by the LED strip as well as projector lamps (i think i saw them) than the current setup, wouldnt the MFD throw all kinds of errors? (I am still a noob on this topic so please pardon my ignorance)

P.S.:Attaching the headlamp pic for reference.

Woah!! This looks sick man! Let's just wait for a while and these will be easily available in the after market as well as online.

Coming to the technical part, I do think that the MFD will throw out some errors, but that can be sorted out at the service station isn't it?
That said,
Even the fog lamps for the New Jetta are not available on the Internet as well as after market shops. The only ones I saw were available on ECS tuning but they were really very expensive.

Just attaching another pic of the Headlamp. Looks wicked doesn't it?

The Hybrid if memory serves right is going to be out somewhere around the later part of this year, I think I read that online! Coming to the technical aspects - what is toughest to do currently (Drop in projectors) is get inside the casing of the Headlight. Unlike most every other manufacturer the Jetta MKVI's headlight assembly is fused together (Glass + Plastic base) with some kind of a super glue which doesn't give way in your standard heating device, it has to be literally sawed open. Even if you get that right resealing the unit is going to be a major pain with no guarantee of having a water tight, condensation free unit ever again. With the Hybrids unit, the most difficult part of the dilemma is solved, you have a readymade projector equipped unit, the shape and size is a perfect match (Same car) as far as matching the power/current draw to resolve any MFD error issues, well there are fixes for that dime-a-dozen already.

re: VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8

Took the Dub out for some highway miles today - Work wanted me to be available in Mumbai (Thane) for the day and I opted to drive myself to put on some decent mileage on the odometer at a stretch and work the engine a bit through its RPM's, something that you just cant do in the city or around it. This trip was especially important as I might definitely be heading out of the city for a few days or a week and the dub's going to see downtime for the period.

Nothing special to report other than the rock solid handling on the highway, excellent maneuverability (You know how our trucks, cab's like to show you how they've been gifted the road by their near and dear ones) and response. Completely planted and gripping the road in and out of corners, I had fun.

Pune to Mumbai (Thane) I decided to use a lightfoot, well as Light as I can Foot it, to check the FE and other stuff like creaks and groans etc etc. I was pleasantly surprised as till the end of the E'way I was posting around 20.8Km/L on the MFD. Then Mumbai traffic happened and I ended my light-footing as below:

Total Kms
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-pune2mumbai-kms.jpg
Total Travel Time
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-pune2mumbaitraveltime.jpg
End Point FE - One Way Pune to Mumbai Average RPM's approx 2k
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-pune2mumbai-lightfoot.jpg

On the way back it was time to put the engine through some RPM variations. I found some open (read totally deserted stretches) of the E'way to give the engine bursts of 3k to 4.5k RPM's. Put her through the cruise control (2K RPM) and Sports mode (2.5K to 4.5K) for a period of time and did the Ghat section in D with liberal flooring of the pedal to force shifts.

Not bad FE at all, I must say. This is such a bonus!

Hey DeKay, I apologize for the late response. Have been away for a bit. I am not a fan of drop in HID's and the Jetta's headlight is not a simple 'bake and open' job like the rest/most of the cars. Our HL assembly requires to be cut open, I wouldn't trust anyone here to do the job properly. I guess I will wait for the Jetta Hybrid to debut and then order the headlight assembly off it.

Now the Thread Update Upcoming mods. This is what I've received till now :

The Spoiler is good to go on the car by this weekend; as soon as I'm back from some planned travel starting tomorrow morning. Will put up installed pics then. BTW, if you are wondering this is approx. USD60/- painted, fed-exed and taxed.

DIY - Taillight tints + Spoiler pics

Finally got everything I needed to tint my tails after months (literally) of planning, ordering and waiting for ordered stuff to get in. Took out the entire taillight assembly to move it indoors for the prep+job. Started off Saturday early evening finishing around 2200 Hrs.

Pictures below , your comments are welcome and appreciated and as always let me know if you need pointers for your own car.

Step 1: Getting my act together
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-step-1-ready-go.jpg

Virgin tails
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-glossy-sides.jpg
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-glossy-centers.jpg

Step 2:
Get the factory clear coat off, scuff up the plastic so the paint has something to hold and stay on too. 2000 Grit Sandpaper + Running water tap
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-sanded-side.jpg
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-sanded-center.jpg
Post process air dry and wipe down with microfiber cloth to remove any foreign material on the lenses. Use masking tape to cover up any parts of the lenses you do not want tinted. Most Important - DO NOT make skin/finger contact with the lenses / surface area of the tails

Step 3: Begin applying your tint. Spray the taillights beginning at least an inch before and ending after an inch or two from the units. Maintain around 6/10 inches of distance between the spray can and surface area being painted. Light single pass, back and forth horizontally. Repeat at least twice no more than thrice. Ten to Fifteen minutes between each coat. Resist temptation to touch the surface area!

Single Coat:
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-coat-1.jpg

The below pic is with the FINAL third coat on without Clear Coat.
VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-final-coat-preclear.jpg

Repeat the tint process this time with the Clear Coat spray. Do this with the masking tape removed, this way we get some clear coat on on the parts that did not receive any tint but were sanded and buffed.

Note: The clear coat does not impede light in any manner. The function of the clear coat is to act as a protective barrier between the paint layer and sunlight as well as your local car washer. About three times with the clear coat should be good enough.

VW Jetta MKVI DSG - Update: DIY Mods and Pics on Page 8-final-tails.jpg

Wait for the final clear to dry and then it will be time for some good ol' fashioned elbow grease. The lights need to be very lightly wet-sanded once more. After they are dry apply liberal amounts of Rubbing/Polishing compound and go to town buffing it out with a microfiber cloth. This should give you a nice glossy smudge free finish.
