Picked up this Portable Vacuum Cleaner for Rs. 5xx. It's MRP is actually Rs. 990, but the place from where I picked this up, has recently surrendered it's MASS certification, and had lots of such accessories for cheap grabs.

I have been eyeing a decent cleaner for lighter jobs, as it's not always convenient to haul the larger Vacuum Cleaner for minor cleaning jobs. I was actually eyeing the 130W model, but after using both of them side by side, the 130W didn't actually feel like a 130W unit, and this 60W baby didn't feel all that much underpowered.

Then it was restored in a local FNG, and the work appeared fine initially, but actually it was badly tinkered and all rust spots were hidden by putty rather than solving the issue. So this time we have decided to go for the complete overhaul. All chassis panels will be replaced, rather than tinkered and then will be rust proofed in the best way possible using Zinc Primer and Epoxy. Also the engine and gearbox will be changed. Engine has done more than 4 lac kms and now it cannot be overhauled as the block's condition is very bad(was rebored once).
Just realised, I had mentioned about Sumit's 1992 Maruti 800 going in for restoration, but didn't post the current pics. Well here they are:

List of jobs done:

1. Rust removal from entire car

2. The entire floor and chassis section after the B pillar was reconstructed using MGP panels. We tried to avoid patchwork as much as possible. All welds were treated with Cold Galvanising spray and then epoxy primer.

3. Engine and Gearbox is brand new, came in a crate from Gurgaon.

4. Carburettor used is Mikuni Japan make. Found a brand new example luckily.

5. Shade name is Cairo Dust. This is the shade she came originally in.

More questions, if any, are welcome. Of course, except budget.

Shashi

Update: After the Bokaro trip, GG was extremely dirty. I came back to Delhi immediately after that, and she was left in the same appalling state for almost two weeks, before dad decided to give her a wash for Vishwakarma Puja. This time we decided to increase the shampoo concentration a bit. Used 40mL shampoo, and the result was awesome. The underbody was thoroughly washed, and couple of spots were touched up where anti rust had chipped off. GG then got a coat of Chemical Guys Butter wet wax. I loved the shine and gloss which it gives, and the metallic particles in the paint simply pop off. However, its not a very long lasting wax, like say Collinite 845. Time for pics:

My car's ICE. I am not an audiophile by any means, and the 800 hardly has any space for mounting the speakers even if one wishes to. I hate cutting the doorpads, so this is the only way which could satiate my audio related needs.

The TPMS saga: I was fascinated with this since my school days, when some variant of Scorpio first came with it. Then I slowly learnt how important this feature is, and how it has been made mandatory in US for all cars after 2007. Infact, nothing troubled me more than the sight of a wreck due to a tyre burst. This upgrade was always there in my subconscious mind.

The Indian startup Sensairy fueled this desire even more. Everything looked great, and it was infact almost finalized. The only reasons why I didn't go with Sensairy were:

1. Wanted to have a clean system. No hanging mobile anywhere for having the pressure readouts in front of me. This point specially won't matter to owners of new gen cars which get Android Auto, and hence can get the readouts on the screen in a cleaner way.

2. Sensairy was in contention over others from Aliexpress because of the support they were promising. I don't believe in products without any kind of support. What helped in MGA's case was that Nippon was backing the product. Hence no sweat over any failed batteries or tyre valves. Not saying that Sensairy is bad, but it was my assessment that I'll be able to deal with Nippon and Maruti better. Secondly, what is sold by Maruti is essentially a Schrader UK made product. A quick search on the internet revealed that this is a common product in aftermarkets, and there won't be any shortage of anything even if Maruti/Nippon fails to provide support.

What finalized the deal for me, was that I found this setup lying at a dealership which shut shop in 2016. They were selling their huge inventory at unbelievable prices, and I found one set of this TPMS lying there, 2015 stock. While I cannot reveal the price I paid for obvious reasons, I can roughly hint that I paid less than half the price of a Sensairy system.

I was obviously worried about the battery inside the sensor, and hence took the setup to Nippon's local service centre. They were kind enough to replace the sensors with brand new units FoC and also registered the product on the date of sale.

Time for some pics:

Two options were available for mounting, a double sided tape or a velcro. I used the provided velcro strips, as the display unit uses AA batteries, which needs to be replaced every year or so. So the setup should be removable.

It has already saved me once, when some vandal deflated one of the wheels in a shopping complex, but the wheels appeared properly inflated. The actual pressure was way below the company recommended 27PSI. I was promptly warned once I entered the car.

The device has motion sensors, which detects movement/activity and turns ON. It automatically switches off after a minute if no movement is detected.

Another LHD addition, GG gets rechristened.

It was always in my mind to give GG a different name. After all, she is one of its kind in the country. Hence very well deserved a different name. It should be something which is unique, yet significant to the lineage.

Reasons for changing her badge:

1. Emotional: Well, as described earlier, I wanted to differentiate my baby from thousands of other 800s running on Indian roads.

2. Technical: While studying about spark plugs, I noticed that they mentioned 4V/Cylinder derivatives of most Maruti's as the i version. For example, 800 6 Valve was known as simply 800, whereas the 12 Valve version became the 800i. Similarly, the 8 Valve version of Zen and Gypsy were simply known by their original names, but the 16 Valve version was given the i tag, Zen i and Gypsyi respectively. Infact, this held true for all the vendors, as I saw this same nomenclature being used by other vendors too.

NGK's chart referring 5 Speed Version as 800i

The love of my life - A 2000 Maruti 800 DX 5-Speed. EDIT: Gets export model features on Pg 27-capture.jpg

Recently, I came to know that some 800s exported from India were given the 800i badge. While it signified a 12 Valve head in some countries(both with carburettor and MPFI), in others, it simply indicated MPFi tech under the hood with 6 Valve head.

Well, GG is both a 12 Valve engine as well as MPFi, so I am safe either way.

So ladies and gentlemen, presenting to you, the new badge on GG:

The curious case of fading side indicators: Last year, I replaced one lens assembly, as it had oxidized terminals. I thought back then, why worry about cleaning the terminals, when brand new MGP is available for dirt cheap prices.

Over the year, I had to replace three lenses, as they used to fade badly in 3-4 months. I decided to check what the issue was. Why was the right side never fading, but it was always the left one?

Turned out, the original ones on my car were made by Tokai Denso, Japan. The replacement ones were made by some Indian firm named Jay.

Hats off to the Japanese quality. Let the pics do the talking:

Luckily, I rarely throw away old spares. So I must be having it somewhere. Will fix and put it back ASAP.

This incident reminded me of a question which BHPian im_srini had asked me few months back:

I used to drive a similar 800 '95 model back when I was working part-time. I'm alive thanks to the seat belts and crumple zones of this vehicle. My partner , an old man who was driving that night dozed off and the car crashed into an electric post.

We both suffered whiplash injuries from the seat belt and we're able to walk away from it. The car was back on the road after some extensive work.

Beautiful restoration, I'm sure it's better than factory at this point.

It was the same case in our 1987 model M800. Our left rear combination light was damaged so it was replaced. It faded in less than a year. The right one was as good as new till we sold it off in 2007 or 2008, nearly 20 years after the car came home. That was made by Tokai-Denso, Indian spare was by Lumax! Our car had more than 60% stuff that was Made In Japan. In the engine bay, I tried to find out if anything was of Indian make but it was all Japanese. So I concluded that our engine was indeed made in Japan.

Looks very subtle yet unique. Much better option than the Fronte badge which you were earlier contemplating.

I really really hope MSIL and Suzuki Japan are reading this thread. Even if I had a Roller I'd keep one of these little cars with me and give her a hug every single day. Yes boss, that's how much I appreciate this thread.

Shashi - Denso makes long lasting parts. They better as they are Toyota's baby It's interesting to note Bosch was an early collaborator. This doesn't surprise me. No wonder I find Bosch parts scattered all over my Toyota commuting appliance. MSIL's Indian OEM suppliers are no match against this pedigree.

Is it allowed legally to drive 19 year old vehicle on road in your city ? I mean this is in reference to seizing of 15yr old vehicles in Delhi and cancelling their RC's.

Yes, absolutely no such nonsense here. Infact, the RTO guys are happily renewing the registration after passing the fitness tests. DBHPian Saket77 got his Zen's fitness renewed some months back without any issue.

PS: Many of the old Vehicles from NCR are being sold here at dirt cheap prices. People are happily driving them here legally after getting the required documentation done.

Hi!

Most of the Indian cities don't have this 15 year old blanket ban. After completion of 15 years of initial registration, all petrol and diesel cars qualify for 5 additional years but given that they qualify the pollution tests and the RTO inspection by the Motor Vehice Inspector of the city. Relevant fees and taxes are payable again, of course.
Hope this clears the air with regards to 15 year rule!

Regards,
Saket

I recently extended my '98 M800 DX life by another 5 years after getting a fitness test done at RTO and paying some Green tax.
Only thing the RTO checks is the condition of the smoke/ Engine and outer body.

In addition to the Renewal fees for fitness test, Govt is also earning some amount through Green tax. Without much impact on the environment.

This is implemented only in the National Capital Region(NCR) and nearby areas.
