There is a cheaper option to the 3M silicone grease. From liqui moly . Not sure how it fares against the 3M

https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Another one

I have the LM grease but it is not meant for caliper pin greasing. Checked with LM Germany about it. The correct grease is Brake pin grease

This is LM's caliper grease - LM Caliper grease

The last product - they mention it as a dielectric grease only. 3M also specifies their product can be used in calipers pins and is safe for rubber/plastic materials. Unless a mfr. explicitly mentions their product's suitability for caliper pins you should not use it.

PS - if you wish to opt for something less expensive just pick up a OEM lube pouch/sachet from a car dealer, an example being that Hyundai grease.

Thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression that all silicone grease can be used on caliper pins. I already have a pouch of Hyundai caliper pin grease. Will continue using the same till its consumed. Later will get the toyota one.

Siiicone greases come in different types for different applications. The one used in calipers has to sustain its properties in very high temperature, pressure and humidity.

Most silicone greases are for use on mechanisms (I it use for my electronic mechanism repairs too for e.g. in CD/BD/DVD drives or players among other things), locks, as a dielectric grease, seat and sunroof sliding mechanisms among other things. A tiny squirt of LM's silicone oil sorted out my rather old Sennheiser HD 650 headphone's ear cup sliding mechanism that had become a bit stiff with age. Heck I even use a dab on my refrigerator's sliding shelves. But I hasten to add this one is food grade silicone, inedible of course, but can be used near or at places where food items are either processed or stored. For a DIYer like me I can't have too many tools and lubes.

The gist of all this: before purchasing a grease or any other lube read the specs either on the product itself or the manufacturer's website. Or contact them via their support email or form.

@Leoshashi - sorry for taking your thread off topic.

I still remember the delivery day. There were two freshly unloaded cars, kept in a corner. One was our GG, and beside her was a Metallic Cyprus Blue 800 DX, 5 Speed. We wanted a lighter shade and hence GG was our choice. But some spares were missing. There was no battery, no toolkit and one seat belt buckle was missing as well. Probably the dealer had installed them on some other car. So that Blue 800 was the donor car for GG.

Guess what, I kept seeing that car often at my MASS. Coincidentally, today BHPian Sumitsinha0280 was at MASS and that car had come for paid service. The owner is an old uncle who had once reprimanded me when I tried to take pic of his car. So I asked Sumit to get me numerous pics of the car, obviously discreetly :

Finally got time to do the job myself. While rest of the process was simple, what shocked me was the insane amount of mud like caked deposits inside the caliper pin carrier. Mechanics never clean the carrier, but simply wipe the caliper pin and stuff grease inside. Glad I chose to do this as a DIY. I had initially planned to take pics of every step, but after seeing the condition, decided to skip the pics and instead focused on the job itself.

Had to use brake cleaner plus ear buds/screwdriver wrapped with lint free disposable towels combo to flush out all the crap which had accumulated over the years. Also changed the boots along with new Toyota Grease.

Some pics I could manage:

The boots didn't show any signs of damage with Permatex:

Out comes the carton with all brake related stuff:

Changed all the boots.

Torqued all bolts as per spec:

GG during a recent PUC test. Barely getting any time to take care of her, hence please excuse the dirty car.

GG is soon nearing her 20th Birthday, which also means getting her fitness done. This time we have opted to take NOC from Patna and move the registration to Ranchi. Last time we couldn't take NOC during the 15 year fitness because it takes couple of months for the entire procedure. This time around, I am in action since December. Steps I had to follow are: Conversion to Smart Card RC>> Apply for NOC at Patna(Done)>>Get NOC, apply at Ranchi for registration. Its indeed a hassle to keep shuttling between Delhi Patna and Ranchi. I would have opted to get this done through some agent despite them quoting insane amount like 20k, but one chap declared that it will be impossible for me to get it done on my own, and that its not worth it for a 20 year old car. Well took it as a challenge and once I'm done with Patna RTO, it should be a smooth sail at Ranchi.

Regards,
Shashi

Happy Birthday Dearest GG: Our Beloved 5641 turns 20. However due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, I couldn't visit my hometown, and hence no celebration this time.

Hope this ends soon, without much discomfort to mankind.

Signing off with an old pic I had in gallery:

Happy Birthday to CG and wishing you many more pristine miles with her. How many kilometers has the car done so far?

Drive on,

20!

Scrolling down this page, and seeing the condition of the Metallic Cyprus Blue 800 DX from the same delivery batch as yours - can't help but truly appreciate your car maintenance once again!

Cheers to the next decade of experiences with GG!

Thanks a lot for your wishes. I'm not sure about the exact odo reading as I haven't seen her in over a month. But it's soon nearing the 3.4 lac mark. Since the 800 always got a 5 digit odo, it will be showing approximately 40k. After the marathon run in October last year, she hasn't seen much action and has barely done 1000 odd kilometers.

Thanks a lot Boss! Time indeed flies so quickly. For GG, age is just a number.

Hope the world gets back on its usual course soon, and then I shall be updating about the RC renewal process. The fitness is expiring on 17th April. Thankfully MoRTH has extended the deadlines till June 30th.

Regards,
Shashi

Being an admirer of this thread since 2016, I was eagerly waiting to congratulate you for maintaining this GG in such a pristine condition.

We too have a Maruti 800 DX 5 Speed that we took in November 2000 and it was actually the car in which my dad and myself learnt to drive. She still retains almost 80% of factory paint, original rubber mats and even faded monograms on the hatch. Till date, she had clocked about 3,22,000kms on odo and still she is my dad's daily driver though we have many other cars in garage.

I really love your 5-Speed beauty and the way you have been modding it from time to time is literally an inspiration.

I had a query regarding the 800. Like when MPFi came in, the power and torque figures increased in the Zen and the Esteem. The Zen had a 20% increase in power output and the Esteem had a whopping 30% increase.

But why were the figures nearly identical in the carb and the 4-Speed MPFi 800?
