Re: Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia

With the lockdown easing, the car was back on the roads

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-01.jpg

It continued its duties as home movers, helping shift utilities for a friend

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-02.jpg

Had an incident with a curb and it won, left the front skirt damaged.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-03.jpg

Off came the bumper and skirt to fix it

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-04.jpg

The air dam was the only dirty part left in the front.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-05.jpg

It also had red overspray from the previous time the bumper was painted

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-06.jpg

Everything cleaned and returned to pristine state

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-07.jpg

Bumper put together ready for re assembly

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-08.jpg

There was a lot of water ingress in both headlights recently so they came apart to find and fix the root cause. Turns out the glue around the lens was fine, water ingress was from the headlight cap in the back

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-09.jpg

Oh well, the headlights were re assembled too

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-10.jpg

Similar treatment for the left headlight

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-11.jpg

Improved rear headlight caps with zero chance of water ingress

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-12.jpg

Up and running again!

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-13.jpg

Sometime few years ago, I picked up a stock Cedia exhaust from a giveaway at TBHP. With so much boredom happening around the lockdown, I decided to see what I could do with it.

This is how it was given to me

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-14.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-15.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-16.jpg

Lot of rust, paint overspray and what not. Took my time cleaning it, it's as good as new, a worthy display piece in my garage.

Re: Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia

One of these days, I took the slow route back from Mysore to Bangalore stopping along for photoshoots

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-01.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-02.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-03.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-04.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-05.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-06.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-07.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-08.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-09.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-10.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-11.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-12.jpg

I then saw a tractor trail, decided to explore it anyway, knowing well I didn't have a 4x4

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-13.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-14.jpg

Eventually I reached the end, this is as far as I can go in my car

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-15.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-16.jpg

Heading back, this happened

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-17.jpg

A part of the path caved and my front left wheel got stuck. It was a 6 foot drop

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-18.jpg

Because it was still a Covid situation, there was literally no one around. Walked to the main road and no one stopped to help or even listen. Called up BHPian and good friend KarthikK if he can come by with his Thar and pull me out. He unfortunately did not have anything to tow me out with so that was out.

Ended up walking ~8kms and 1.5 hours to the nearest village. A kind farmer offered to help me with his tractor.

Back to the site. The bumper had crumpled further after 2+ hours of load, sigh. The tractor took no time at all pulling me out of the ditch.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-19.jpg

Heading back with a bruised ego and front bumper. Oh well, it could have been worse and I am thankful I could still drive back home after all that happened today.

Amazing car. The car is in an immaculate condition. Thanks to the attention to detail that you have showed on her. This car must be a head-turner where ever it goes. Thanks for keeping it in good shape outside and under the hood.

Re: Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia

It was finally time to get rid of the poop wheels. They all come off the car and get sanded down in preparation of new paint

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-01.jpg

...and I went with my safe choice, gold.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-02.jpg

Applied some ceramic coating on it. This turned the matte wheels satin, much to my dislike.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-03.jpg

Got a "cheap" torque wrench dedicated only to tightening wheel bolts

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-04.jpg

Car looking resplendent in gold shoes

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-05.jpg

More pictures of the car in its usual habitat

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-06.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-07.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-09.jpg

It was time to replace the dead 4 channel amp with something working. Got an XM-GS4 from bamaboy, and he included a something in the package that said miniDSP on it

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-10.jpg

Proper colour coded wiring as always

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-11.jpg

GS4 and miniDSP fitting nicely underneath the driver's seat

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-12.jpg

By this time, My 2 channel amp had also died and I got 2 channels of the 4 channel amp working. Ugh, my amp problems never cease

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-13.jpg

Decent location for the remote, does not hit my knee

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-14.jpg

I did the basic TA and set the crossovers. I had to get it tuned by Piyush, its been over 3 years and I've still not done it. Sigh. One of these days for sure...

Red car enjoying company of more red cars

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-15.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-16.jpg

Soon it was time for a new battery. I wanted to get this one with the right post orientation. When I took out the clamp for the positive lead, I noticed a crack and corrosion happening on the underside

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-17.jpg

Bought a new terminal clamp, gave it an anti rust coating a.k.a Hot Pink nail polish, heh

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-18.jpg

Got a battery with a higher capacity for the same size, new battery is a DIN60 replacing a DIN55

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-19.jpg

Soon got another GS4 to replace the other ailing amplifier.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-20.jpg

So glad to have replaced the other amp. I now have another spare 2 channels, might add rear fill when I have passengers sitting in the back.

Superb job done. Hat's off to you for making the engine bay look cleaner than newly delivered car. No doubt you turned your car into Gold.

Tremendous job, preserve your Gold

Re: Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia

That's one amazing car you have. Had always been a fan of Lancer and Cedia, they always had that street racer pedigree and looks.

Used to read all your quotes on Fiat Palio threads and now following the Cedia thread.

Read a news yesterday that three drunk guys on a scooter broke the left ORVM of a red car on Kanakapura Road. The photos were a bit blurred, but the car looked like a Red Cedia, Was it yours?

These updates are from 2020 so it wasn't them. This happened at Srirangapatna. The photo was clicked at the Police Station where I filed an FIR with dashcam footage as evidence. They were caught after few days and then given a stern warning.

There are few more updates before I will reach current day state of the car

Re: Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia

Come December 2020, it was time to change the fluids on the car

Engine oil and filter

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-01.jpg

Brake Fluid

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-02.jpg

I got righty tighty lefty loosey wrong, ended up tightening the old oil filter instead of loosening it. Sigh. it eventually came off but I sometimes wonder what's wrong with me

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-03.jpg

Crush washer had never been changed in this sump plug's life

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-04.jpg

Got some fresh copper crush washers from Maruti and filled the engine with fresh oil.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-05.jpg

Next, calipers came off to free the seized caliper pin.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-06.jpg

Dirty bois got cleaned in the process. I'm surprised the caliper paint has lasted so long on it

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-07.jpg

Time for a complete brake fluid flush

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-08.jpg

This is when I discovered I had an oil leak, arguably at the worst location possible. All the signs pointed to a leaky Rear Main Seal. This meant dropping the gearbox and clutch to fix it

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-09.jpg

Soon, I procured some of the parts, a genuine rear main seal and a Koyo release bearing for the clutch

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-10.jpg

But as usual, I kept putting off the change and 3 years later, the leak still exists. Adding updates in this thread has finally made me realise how long I've been putting off these critical updates on the car. I just paid for a clutch kit and new rear suspension this morning!

Gave the engine its first wash exactly one year after the detail. Used left over car shampoo to clean the engine and nothing else

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-11.jpg

Every treated surface is beading strongly

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-12.jpg

Even the exhaust manifold heatsheild! Despite all the direct heat from the exhaust

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-13.jpg

More beady pics

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-14.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-15.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-16.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-17.jpg

My favourite part is where even the brake lines exhibhit water beading from the ceramic coat. I truly did not spare any surface when I coated the engine bay.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-18.jpg

Picture after drying the engine bay. Looks just like how I left it a year ago

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-19.jpg

The car then went into hibernation for around 4 months. Unfortunately, mold had made the interiors their home

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-20.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-21.jpg

Every interior part got scrubbed HARD

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-23.jpg

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-24.jpg

Let everything dry for a full 24 hours before winding the windows up

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-25.jpg

In the meanwhile, the exterior just needed a simple wash to make it look its best

That seriously is the best maintained Cedia I have ever seen. Always loved the way it looked and the gold wheels add to the beauty no end.

Not much to update, the car has been hibernating for long periods since I got busy with my other hobbies and projects, you might learn of one of them in this forum soon.

Mitsubishi Cedia is a car that can be driven for 100 years and with a passionate owner like you, it will last for 5 generations! Excellent thread, kudos to you!

Re: Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia

One major peeve was a malfunctioning AC button on the dash. It needed about 10 presses to switch off or on the AC. It was so irritating, I hadn't switched off the AC since couple of years by now.

I finally took out the AC console and separated the PCB

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-01.jpg

Swapped out the AC switch with a new unit.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-02.jpg

It works! I'm now kicking myself for not doing this sooner. Ugh.

Next on the agenda were the headlights (AGAIN??!?!??). This time it was the wiring. By now, only 3 out of 5 projectors worked with the 2 main headlight ones out of the 3 working. I put this off since I wanted to completely re-wire everything from scratch, knowing the scope of work I knew it wouldn't be easy or quick.

Gathered all the components needed. 6 40A relays - one for each projector, 3 20A relays for every pair of high beams. Omni fuse box with 6 fuse support for each projector and some wires

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-03.jpg

Bumper and headlights come of, again.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-04.jpg

Old wiring loom comes off. It was a hacked philips headlight wiring. One might see a burnt pin on the headlight relay, that happened because I ran 4 projectors on one circuit. I then separated them and added another 4 pin relay. This was purely a stopgap, however it worked well for 5 years

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-05.jpg

Gluing all the relays together. That gap in the corner looks weird. Wonder what can be done about it.

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-06.jpg

I've been using a diode to force low beam to turn on with high beam all this while. That gap in the corner gave me an idea to use a relay instead, however I did not have any spare relays with me. I did have an unused fuel pump relay for my Duke 390 and used it instead

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-07.jpg

It's done!

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-08.jpg

Two words - organised chaos

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-09.jpg

Made a mount to fix these relays under the battery

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-10.jpg

Wiring in progress

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-11.jpg

Left side done

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-12.jpg

Right side done too

Life with a Red Mitsubishi Cedia-13.jpg

Everything worked the first try. Phew. Troubleshooting if anything went wrong would have been a nightmare!

Finished the week by giving the engine bay a wash. Its been 2 years and 9 months since the engine bay detail, the ceramic coat even on the exhaust head sheild is intact!

Oh! Didn't know the background.

But are you open to ceramic coating in general? AFAIK, you were averse earlier. Does it make a difference in keeping dust off in severe dusty conditions?

Quote:
*please please* let me know how did you manage so little dust in such a long road trip? Is it because of weather and relatively dust free cities? Need a lot of details here as I am tired of sweeping my car with Jopasu after every drive.
