Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

0w20 is available from

SErvo 0w20 mineral. MGO 0w20 available on Amazon
http://www.amazon.in/MGO-Petrol-Engi...keywords=0w-20

Total 0w20 semi (IIRC) available from Total easily
http://www.total.co.in/b2c-lubhome/b...-smc-0w20.html

Shell HX8 synthetic. 0w20. Not sure where to procure it from.

A lot of members on BITOG are actually using 20 grades on high mileage cars without problem.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

My Swift's one year service meant oil change, and the oil quantity is less than what it was before it had visisted the so called MASS.
Swift petrol's recommended engine oil 0W-20. Kiran Motors used IOCL oil as per the bill ( which now I have full reason to doubt ).

Can I shift to 5W-40 or 5W-30 ? Bosch is also having fully synthetic engine oil at cheaper rate which I spotted on industrybuying. Has anybody used it ? The quantity suits my Swift's capacity perfectly.

Shell 0W-20 is not available anywhere, not even at shall fuel stations. Might be due to Maruti's contract with them. Its not even mentioned on Shell's website. Mobil 1 also has 0W-40. Can this be used in my car ? I have grounded my Swift thanks to low oil filled in my MASS or some other trouble which isn't traced yet. Mobil 1 0W-40 is listed as Motorcycle oil but actual package mentions motor oil.
Last resort : Get MGO 0W-20 Servo ( Maruti couldn't get their contract as stiff wtih IOCL as they did with shell ! ? ) and top up, but dont know how much. This also means minimum damage to pocket.

Please suggest if anybody has made similar shift. Considering massive heat of Gujarat, I think 0W-40 should be great, but it has got me worried.

I’m assuming you’ve a gasoline engine Swift.

Per Swift’s owner’s manual (please see exhibit) for gasoline engines 0W-20 (API-SL)/5W-30 (API-SG+) is recommended.

On a separate note these both are obsolete specs; the current API spec for gasoline engines is API-SN.

I would not recommend a 0w-40 as the viscosity of a 0W-40 oil will be much higher (approx. 12-16 cSt*) as compared to that of a 0W-20 oil (approx. 6-9 cSt).

Please note 0W-40 oil on account of its higher viscosity at engine’s operating temperature will create viscous drag on the engine & your fuel economy will drop.

If you’re keen on using Mobil you can use their Mobil 1 5W-30 that actually exceeds the recommended specs (API-SN Vs API-SL) I will however still recommend that you use 0W-20 if you can find it.

Rule of thumb; always follow manufacturer’s recommendation for they know the best what’s the right viscosity for the engine as they’ve designed the engine.

There are many more considerations when a an OEM recommends a particular viscosity of engine oil such as engine clearances & other operating characteristics than just the ambient temperature.

You can however go to a synthetic blend or a full synthetic formulation within the same viscosity range.

*cSt – Centistoke (Measure of kinematic viscosity)

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Zic oil is available for 1500 for 4L (fully synthetic) and its API-SN rated. Anyone tried it in cars yet? I tried the bike oil 3 year back in my gixxer and didn't like it.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Guys , recommendation needed.

Ciaz Diesel have run about 15,500 kms in 11 months or so. I got the oil changed at 10k mark, but it was standard mineral oil. Now what do you suggest -

Change oil right now with normal mineral oil,and then keep on changing oil every 5k kms with mineral oil?

OR

Change oil with fully sythetic oil and forget it for next 10k or 15k kms?

Second question: will my dealer allow me to bring my own mineral oil(purchased online) for replacement ? If yes, which brand is best value for money?

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

My Honda City (2010) is due for Oil Change. Till now I only got Honda Synthetic Oil from Honda Service on each service. Now I am thinking of trying Shell Helix Ultra 4W-40... Got the Oil from AMAZON Lightening Deal...

http://www.amazon.in/Shell-Helix-550...ilpage_o00_s00

Is flushing required since I will be changing brands ?

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Can anyone comment on these oils -

http://www.amazon.in/ZIC-TECH-FULLY-.../dp/B01D6BXJRU

The page states that it is a Korean brand and has some proprietory high viscosity that makes it ideal for cars. Sells rather cheap.

ZIC X7 5W30 API SN VHVI TECH. FULLY SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL 4 LITER CAN - RECOMMENDATIONS: Gasoline/CNG/LPG engines
Price: 1,700
Sale: 1,122 + 199.94 Delivery charge
You Save: 578 (34%)

And there's this -

http://www.amazon.in/Mobil-ESP-5W-30.../dp/B00SFNNTSE

Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil (4 L)
M.R.P.: 5,500
Price: 4,075 FREE Delivery. Details
You Save: 1,425 (26%)

While the Mobil is a sweet looking deal, this page seems to show that Zic is an OEM for General Motors. Worth a try or not? The reviews on Amazon seem genuine and positive

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I bought Castrol Edge Titanium 5W40 on Amazon.

On Amazon, the seller says it can be used in Diesels, But a member here showed the container saying its not meant for cars with Diesel Particulate Filters

The Post : LINK

Can I use this oil in my Linea MJD ?

The MJD needs an oil with ratings no less than ACEA B4. Just check if it meets ACEA B4 or higher. It should work.

EDIT:

Desi:

It is ACEA C3. So, should work!

Thanks for the India-Spec web-link, it is ACEA B4. I guess it'll work.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

As it is rather cheap even without the discount I am waiting for some brave soul to do so and wait for his review first.

My shell fully synthetic 5W40 has a month or so more before I have to change it so I don't plan to stock up on engine oil in advance.

Zen Estilo will go on just fine on mineral or semi synth oil - so any kind of fully synth oil has to be better than that, even if not as good as Shell.

The reason it is this cheap is that someone seems to be importing it in drums and bottling it here for local resale.

Let us hope there's no quality loss in this process.
