Thanks for the quick response. What is your opinion of "Piston" brand of engine oil? I believe their fully synthetic version is called FASTER.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Recently bought https://www.amazon.in/Veedol-21143X4...dp/B09S6LPBTY/ from offline market for about Rs.3300

and https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07T4KJ4ND/ was available for Rs.2300

Why is there a difference in pricing even though both of them are claiming to be Fully Synthetic?

My friend told me that the cheaper one is a synthetic blend only. Is that true?

First thing first: Always buy engine oil from companies like Total, Mobil, Shell, Motul, Valvoline etc. It is a very critical component of the vehicle.

There could be many reasons for oil with different prices, but the no brainer reason is volume. There is a volume difference in what you bought and what you referred.

No fully synthetic oil gives 100% synthetic content. They claim but this is not true.

Other quality aspects would be different. That's why I was asking you to buy from big brands. If Veedol becomes a big brand, I will start buying from them as well. It would mean they will have power to procure high quality base oils and additives.

Michelin tyres cannot be compared with XYZ tyres(don't want to downgrade any specific brand).

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I have been using Shell Helix HX8 5W30 in my 2014 Swift K12 for the past two years and the engine has been smooth as butter and silent as well. It’s time for the annual service now and the price of this oil has now increased from 1600 last year to 2500 currently. Does it make sense to still get it at this price? Any other oils I should try instead?

The car’s annual running is around 5000km with 60:40 City:Highway split.

Cheers.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

It isn't a significant price difference. If you want semi synthetic which is quite good, try Shell Helix Taxi.

Is that price per litre?

If you are servicing at MASS they will have Mobil 1 oil and will fill the exact quantity required, the usual rate will be Re 1 per ml approx. I let them fill it. My car needs 0W40, but it will be available in the spec required for your car also.

Else you can try the semi synthetic oils from Shell. They are good.

Yes, I might as well just get the HX8 for now, I have multiple inter-state trips coming up in '23 so it would be worth the extra cost for the HX8.

Thanks.

The price is 2490 for 3.5L. I do my services from the FNG and carry my own oil for the change. The car is going to be taken on many inter-state trips next year so it will be a bit smoother with a synthetic oil.

Thanks.

You’re absolutely right. Veedol is a very old and reputed brand and has indeed been around in India for aeons. I remember the ads from the 1970’s, 1980’s in various magazines ( Reader’s Digest for example) as well as in Petrol pumps and all.

Was able to get a 3.5L can for 2100 after inquiring at a couple of shops. Looks like there are limited stocks as even Shell fuel stations did not have one in stock.

Cheers

Plenty on Amazon. It is gradually being phased out as Shell is selling their 0w oils these days.

Just get for example Mobil Super 3000 x1, Valvoline All Climate Advanced.

Agreed. I went from shell helix ultra fully-synthetic to shell helix taxi semi-synthetic because it was almost 1/3rd the price and the performance seems to be the same. I think fully synthetic is a bit overkill for most mass market cars anyway.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

I have a habit of looking into the oil filler plug of my car during oil changes, just to see how the oil performed. Sometimes, I take images as well.

Got oil changed this Saturday and the attached image shows that whatever oil I am selecting is doing a good job. All were heavy duty diesel engine oils of CH4, CI4 or rarely CI4+ rating. I never used fully synthetic oil in the Safari Dicor.

The image on the left was taken before adding new oil, hence it looks dark. The camshaft looks as good as new (touchwood) in both the instances.

What a wrong oil can do to camshafts is described in this thread on a BMW motorcycle related forum.
