GreyNomad, though you could easily go with the Viaterra Element tail bag and save yourself some dough, I would suggest that if your budget permits, go for the bigger and more versatile Viaterra Hammerhead.

While the Viaterra Element can also double as an easy to use storage bag for a water bottle, pair of sunglasses etc, on a breakfast / full day / overnight ride, when it comes to longer journeys (such as this upcoming ride of yours), you might end up having to compromise on what you can pack. There was a time when I used to go for 3 day rides with just a small Cramster tank bag but now, Im more than happy to take a bigger bag in which I can carry extra stuff as well. If you can carry 6 to 8 tees in the Hammerhead, as compared to making do with 3 - 4 in the Element, why not go with the easier (in my books) option?

Also, what if you have to do a 10 - 14 day ride in the future? Will you end up having to buy another tail bag or a tank bag to compliment the Element? Here too, I feel the Hammerhead is more future proof.

Lastly, as far as I know, the Element tail bag isnt easily available online and / or in retail stores. So, this is probably a moot discussion.

There is nothing wrong with taking a minimalistic approach to packing for a multi-day bike ride. Similarly, there is nothing wrong in overpacking for a multi-day bike ride.

So, get the bag that will support the type of travelling and packing that you intend to do.

Whichever you pick up, be sure to share your impressions with us, so that we can also learn from your experiences.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

I have a TB350 and while not much of a rider, I do use it quite regularly for office commute. I am looking for something, which can hold a rain coat (full set) and can be locked to keep it safe. Any suggestions for this which is durable, yet won't pinch the pockets much.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Received the Viaterra Element today. Got it from Amazon at MRP. My previous luggage was the viaterra fly magnetic. The Element is quite big in person and will suffice my need for now. Will update this thread once I ride with it for a bit.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

I got myself a new set of Saddle Bags for my Himalayan.
My bike already has Zana Saddle Stays on it.

Model:
https://viaterragear.com/collections...cle-saddlebags

Purchased from Amazon.
Inside the bags is my Dell L 7420 for size reference.

These bags are quite huge on capacity.
My old Cramsters had a combine space of about 37 Liters. These are 64 liters so maybe on my next trip, I will carry a few nice clothes and take some selfies to live up to the "Influencer" lifestyle ().

I will update on the usability in a couple of weeks. But they are very well made and are very functional.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Hi all,
I'm looking for riding bags for our upcoming travel. It would be a 15 day long tour with all sorts of terrain & roads - hilly, plain, offroad and we'd be riding the Himalayan with saddle stays. For such a tour, what kind of bags do you recommend - saddle bags or tail bags?

I was leaning towards saddle bags, but would love to hear your expert views, keeping in mind current travel & future.

Also, in terms of saddle bags, which ones between the 2 would you suggest - Viaterra Leh or Rynox Drystack?

Is there anything else that we should consider for this journey?

Looking forward to your suggestions !

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Picked the Royal Enfield GMA Military Pannier Rails for the Classic 500 (drum) from Voyage Motors, Borivali (Thakur Village). Will be installing them post rains, since the bike is in hibernation. Now contemplating on the pricey Military Panniers (Rs 5500 for the pair). Does anyone else also have the same on their Classic?

The deciding factor for choosing a tail bag or a saddle bag is whether you will riding with or without a pillion.

If you are going to be riding without pillion, only then go for a tail bag. If anytime you will be going with a pillion, then saddle bags are the only way to go.

Tail bags also have the advantage of being universal and can be fixed without any additional stays.

Saddle bags model choice depend on the bike and the silencer position and will require saddle bag stays.

So details about the bike will be helpful in recommending a saddle bag model.

If at all you are going with a saddle bag, get a 100% waterproof model as usually the rain covers do not go over the side that is near the wheel. During rain or water crossing, water will enter through the inner side of the bag in models which have rain covers only and no 100% waterproofing.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Kindly excuse if this is not the right thread to ask this question about luggage straps/bungees, I could not find any other suitable thread.

My question is regarding fasteners for the tail bag. I'll be doing my first motorcycle tour next week, will use a 70L rucksack/trekking bag(normal rucksack by wildcraft, not motorcycle specific) on my '10 Yamaha Fazer.

From the little that I watched & read, some people are in favour of nylon straps over bungee cords due to their non stretch quality.

Anyways, I have the following options(posting links alongwith), kindly suggest the best suitable product for me:-

1) Mototech Hexapod bungee cords(6 legged bungee cord)
https://mototechgear.com/products/he...ms-grey-orange

2) Rawstone Straps(3 options available, could not differentiate between them, all looked the same except for the length & that one of the straps is slightly stretchable. The description given is not at all helpful, I'm not sure whether I need to order two straps or one would suffice)
https://www.rawstone.in/luggage (First three options)

3) Trek n Ride cam strap(Long strap - Non Stretchable-sold in pair-easy to understand, I liked this one)
https://treknride.com/product/luggage-carry-strap-belt/

4) Acro Straps(sold in pair-non stretch)
https://gearnride.in/product/shop/lu...ylon-tie-down/

5) Wroom Cam Strap(3 different lengths available, again not sure if I need two or one strap is designed to suffice a single bag)
https://wroom.co.in/products/wroom-cam-strap-black/

I'm open to other suggestions, thankyou.

I have both the AKRO and the Wroom CAM Straps. The Akro is not sold as a pair, which I discovered after receiving them. It is one cam strap with an extension cord. The Wroom is much better value IMO, pick up two of those. I have been using them to strap multiple things over many months (Bags, small boxes, packages etc etc), and they have held on snugly. Get two of the 12ft straps and you can tuck in the excess (Two because you can cross strap them). These have been a pleasant experience as compared to by erstwhile Rynox Bungees, which used to come off on big bumps and eventually snapped off while riding.

@shyamg28 has the hexapod and he would be able to comment on those.

Cheers!

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Hi all. I am looking to find out some options of saddle bags for the Classic or Bullet 350.

Viaterra and Rynox seem to have reliable ones that are also not too expensive.
I am interested in getting a total of around 70 L volume.

The thing is saddle bags by these companies tend to be somewhat wide.

Are there 70 L (35*2) bags that are narrower but make for lost volume by having more height?

Some of the cloth or leather saddle bags for the Classic 350 seem to have those dimensions. But they're not water proof seem to not be sturdy enough to handle long-distance touring in the mountains.

Oh I see, thanks for the clarification on Ackro. So I would have to order two, right Sir?(Idk why the description says 1 Pair)

Wroom & Trek n Ride seem similar, moreover the Trek's straps are quite reasonable.

I would have liked to buy Hexapod but I don't have a rear carrier or backrest, so it would be as good as a 4 legged bungee on my bike as it would be hooked from 2 sides only(Please correct if I'm anticipating wrongly)(Pic attached with mark ups)

So I think I would order 2 non-stretchable straps + 1 bungee cord i.e. either 2 Wroom straps or 1 Trek straps(sold as a pair for only ₹600) + Rawstone 4 legged bungee, as the straps seem non stretchable & while riding, the clothes tend to move & compress wherein a stretchable cord would help & adjust accordingly.

I'm still open to suggestions.

I've drilled holes in my grabrails and foot protector plates. For hook points. After that pretty much any good bungee would do. Always carry at least two spares. Bungees do break.
