oink oink to that sir, the problem in india is access to quality performance parts and the high cost to bring it down, not a lack of knowledge. and add to that the scarcity of qualified mechs to do the work.

Judging by some of the comments and questions in this post I would tend to disagree. I did not however, mean to be offensive.

Your point about good mechanics is well taken, and it might behoove you to learn the basics so that you can at least be one step ahead of the mechanic and direct the scope of work.

I too live in a developing country and face the same problems of high import costs and NO knowledge base on Enfields at all. Hence I do my own work, and am simply passing on a bit of experience.

A friend want to turn his 350CC Bull into a 500CC one!!! I think K&N airfilter and a free flow exaust would increase a couple of CCs. But 150CC more??? Is it possible???
The dude says that reboring (is that the exact word) or drilling a bigger hole and putting a 500CC or 535CC piston would do the trick. Won't it mess up the Bull???

@Leepower
A K&N filter and free flow exhaust won't increase the CCs of a bike, they will just give better pickup to a bike.

Its better to get a 500cc engine and fit in the chassis (if possible) beacause reboring if not done properly can lead to engine seizure.

But K&N site claims that their products increase horsepower.
Anyways, how exactly do you make a 350 CC into a 500 CC one (forget about fixing a 500 CC engine). I mean the technical stuff ie reboring (how big should be the hole!!!), which piston etc.
A friend from Kerala said that conversion into a 500 cc and adding a heavy heavy crank is quiet popular down south!!!

Re: Performance mods for bullet !!!

A friend got me 110 jet for the VM24 in the STD 350, from Karol Bagh New Delhi. Did increase the initial and mid range. Tracy Prier had a website to do basic mods but it gone off the web, you can mail him and he is always keen to help out. tracyprier@yahoo.com .

Re: Mods for a Bullet..

Every bullet head has lumps and bumps in the intake port from the casting process which the company never takes the trouble to remove. These bumps cause turbulence and reduce power. Take a dremel or a grinder bit in a drilling machine and with slow strokes do away the bumps in the intake port, till you get a clear path. Remember to leave the intake port surface rough. If you can also increase the compression by milling the head and the cylinder mating surface by 0.35 mm each (total of 0.7mm). This milling is done by a lathe chap. The valve stem height is decreased by 3mm. You will have a nice crispy low and mid range powered bullet, you'll enjoy riding.

Pass on the info - share it with fellow bulleteers

Re: Mods for a Bullet.

Ronald Creasey's ideas for Bullet mods, way ahead of his times. Please keep a copy of all the PDF's. They're old but priceless. His ideas were revolutionary.

Re: Performance mods for bullet !!!

Please download these PDF's. everyone attempting mods should go through Creasey's articles. They may be a few decades old but the principles remain the same. At least they hold good for CI bullets, as most of them were never upgraded and remained the same.

I did have something like a k&n but it made the beat sound into a whistle. Remember that air is aspirated thro the carb at a spped of 2 - 2.5 mach. Hence the whistle heard from a distance. Power increase is marginal. The dust getting into the carb is huge. Avoid k&n if u live in a dusty place. Rain is another problem but riding after a rain in the cool moist air is fabulous, engine loves it..... the enfield is truly transformed.

Why the specific 0.7mm & valve stem height reduction ? something to do with stock carburation- no jetting or the like? There are bikes with 1mm taken off the head face for higher compression mostly coupled with intake-exhaust-jetting upgrades.

Re: Mods for a Bullet..

I followed Tracy Prier for one reason and the other was I used just 2 lower gaskets. Decreasing gaskets lowers the deck height. I was initially worried about causing pinging with increasing compression, but it usually does when you exceed 8:1. You're right you can mill the head 1mm and decide on how many lower gaskets you need depending on how high your piston sits at TDC. You'll be amazed how well the enfield starts with a quarter kick after increasing the compression.

Rennjit, it's worth going through creasey's article on the previous page. He talks of removing the top copper plated gasket. I wonder how he managed the oil leak that follows. I liked the 4 shoe rear brake too, I wish someone did that for us, would be a great addition.

Re: some bullet mods plz.

There are free flow aftermarket silencers that will make the bull roar. You'll upset the neighbours wife for sure! ha ha ha.... Remember to upjet your carb to 100 or 110 main jet after you install a free flow exhaust. Otherwise your engine will run very lean. If you are doubtful u can do a plug chop before considering upjetting. If your plug is greyish-white, then u need larger main jet. Buy them from Karolbagh New delhi, they cost Rs 20.

Re: Mods for a Bullet..

Guys, has anyone replaced the stock tires on their Bullet with 3.5X19? Any pros/cons that you would like to state?

A friend of mine had installed 3.5s and said that it improves stability & grip but my mechanic says that there is no functional difference.
