Re: Skoda Octavia 2.0 TSI DSG Review

Hi All,

Recently picked up a used 2021 L&K with odometer 35k kms in Bangalore. Currently own a GT TDI (1.5) First impressions are the car feels luxurious when I compare it with my 2018 make hatch.
Did get it checked with PPS Hennur and Carmed before making the purchase for any major issues.
While I am still trying to learn more about the Octy wanted to check on few things.
Fellow owners, any high priority things I need to take care ASAP?

Its still under the 4 year warranty and planning to extend it for another 2 years in May.
The tires need to be replaced (still on OEM tires) and the Skoda ASC advisor at PPS mentioned upsizing the width to 225 shall disregard the warranty hence planning to stick to 205 55 R17 with either Goodyear Assurance Comfortread or Bridgestone Turanza 6i

Fellow Octavians
I wanted to know how long your car battery has lasted and whether you went with the same replacement or any other battery from the market, Thanks

My car is touching 3yrs/27000 km. Have not changed the battery so far but the service center had recommended changing it.

Skoda Octavia MK4’s central locking remote control uses a very common 3V CR2032 cell. Luckily the Samsung Galaxy Tag uses the same battery so I had some new cells with me. It was fairly easy to open the back panel of the remote to access the sealed battery compartment, good to see some waterproofing inside.

The key is manufactured in Germany by Hella and bears a small Skoda logo.

Look at the delicate mechanism to push the key out.

How to start the car with a dead key fob?

My OE battery lasted 2 years and I had changed it last year after getting the warning. Last week the car went totally unresponsive (without any warning) when I tried to open it. Was not sure if it was the key fob batter or the car battery that was dead. The optimist in me assumed it was the key fob battery. After some emergency youtube-ing, I pulled out the mechanical key from the fob and manually opened the car. The theft alarm went off. I could not figure out how to start the car though. The youtube videos for older gen Skodas said you can press the push button start with the key fob and the car would start. This did not work for me. Thankfully my driver arrived with the spare key fob and saved the day. Does anyone know how to crank the engine with a dead key fob battery?

My car is just over three years old and has done about 34,500 kilometers. I'm still using the original battery, but I’ll most likely replace the tires before the monsoon

I checked with few tuners in Bangalore and apparently the EA 888 Gen 3B engine’s ECU is locked.

Not sure if anyone here has given it a try.

Haha, no. But I too had visited them and got to know that it's delivery was due the next day. They also had the other lava blue Octavia with ~60K kms but the pricing was such that the white one made sense.

Anyways, Congratulations to you man!

I got another deal directly from an owner - Lava Blue ~20K Kms with much lesser price than what Spinny was asking.

Btw, interested to know:

1. what mileage are you getting in city (peak traffic and low traffic) and highways?

2. Also did you get any gear selector error anytime during your ownership?

3. I am also getting the 2 year extended warranty - did you get a quote? any scope to reduce the ~84K price?

4. Are you sure about the warranty getting void if you move to 225 tyres?

5.Do you feel the difference between XP95 and regular petrol?

Re: Skoda Octavia 2.0 TSI DSG Review

POWER 95 gives better mileage then XP 95. Have always observed this . Plus the car feels more zippy with Power 95 fuel. Only issue is that it is not available everywhere like xp95. In city the best figures i got are 8kmpl.

Thanks buddy. Congrats to you too.
1. In the city I get a mileage around 8-9kpl in peak Whitefield traffic and highways it hovers between 12-14kpl with occasional spirited driving.
2. Not yet, but spoke to PPS Hennur and apparently, there are selected cars which are prone to the gear selector issue. You might want to get it checked if your car falls under the VIN list to get a gear selector replaced. Mine isn't in that list as per them.
3. Yes, 84K was a flat rate they quoted and I am planned to get my extended warranty in May.
4. Yes, the service advisor did mention about the issue if I go for a 225 section. (specifically for the steering rack replacement under warranty)
5. Have only filled XP95 since I got the car. Initially I noticed some jerks around 2-3k RPM which are now gone not sure if it was the fuel or the previous owner was filling regular fuel.

I too experienced the sudden jerks (on my way to ooty) - the car had XP95 fuel - so don't think fuel is the issue.
If you search youtube for "Gearbox Shuddering issue Octavia" - you'll see what I experienced - did you experience the same?

Also during my ooty Trip, sometime the steering would not budget and when it did ,it would be sudden. This was accompanied by a mild short screeching sound.
Only experienced this multiple times during my Ooty trip (while and after the hairpin bends ascent). Experienced it once or twice after that trip in last 30 days.

Any similar experience? - I'm thinking to get that checked - but what exactly could be the issue - I'm unclear.

Re: Skoda Octavia 2.0 TSI DSG Review

Dear all
Today, while returning home I got an error popping up
'Gearbox in emergency mode, you can drive on'..

There was a visible shudder and gear changes weren't smooth..

Is this related to the 'Gear selector issue' that has been discussed in this forum or something else, Thanks

The "Gear selector" issue is related to the gear shifter mechanism which shouldn't cause shuddering issues.

Suggest that you make an appointment with Skoda ASAP since this seems like a mechanical issue with the gearbox.

Yes, I had somewhat similar experience when I floored the accelerator pedal, the car would hesitate to accelerate and the RPM would fluctuate between 2.5-3K RPM. tried switching the mode from D to S and M but still had the same issue.
I checked with the ASC and they mentioned if there is no error code or CEL then they cannot diagnose it.
Even the log file did not show any issue when I took it to PPS Hennur.

Haven't seen the issue in last 1 month or on my recent 600kms trip to Hyderabad. So fingers crossed on this.

I did read about your steering issue and I did notice the same on my short trip to Nandi Hills after taking sharp turns while descending. Again the issue is not replicable to take it to the service center to get it diagnosed. (another reason to not upgrade to fatter tires incase the steering rack needs a replacement under warranty)

Wanted to check with fellow long term owners on this issue too.

Re: Skoda Octavia 2.0 TSI DSG Review

Hi all
This is an oft discussed topic here in the past but haven’t been able to find any current info on this thread. So I’m 40k km into my Octavia and am considering replacing the terrible Goodyear stock tyres. In my previous Jetta I switched to the Michelin Primacy tyres and they were awesome. But apparently they’re not available at all in the default size for the Octavia.

What’s the preferred tyre replacement now? My options seem to be Goodyear assurance again or an MRF or Bridgestone Turanza.
