Re: MG Astor Review

Test drove the Astor today with a friend and his mom. Immediately after the Astor TD, I drove my friend's 2018 Creta on the same stretch. Our observations were as follows:

Astor wins:
1. I think the Astor looks better than the 2018 Creta. Looks a lot more sporty than SUV. Won't catch me complaining!
2. Quality of interiors is excellent. Soft to touch material everywhere
3. Pleasantly surprised to see the TPMS also displays individual tyre temperatures!
4. The car has a lot of gizmos, but we could not get the forward-collision warning system to work.

Cons:
1. Rear seat is best suited for 2 people. A third person is highly unwelcome especially considering the massive floor hump
2. The interiors feel less airy than the Creta. Though it has larger dimensions than the Creta
3. The seat material used in the Astor, though premium, gave us the impression that the seats were harder than on the Creta
4. Steering wheel did not feel as good to the touch as the Creta
5. On passing over the same undulations at the same speed, the Astor bounced the rear passengers around a lot more. My friend thought I was faster in the Astor. But that was not the case.
6. My friend is tall (6'2") and something kept rubbing his shoulder in the right rear seat while we passed over an undulation

I was very keen on the Astor, but the issue with the bouncy suspension on uneven rounds was downer. Did anyone else feel something similar?

I had narrowed down my list to the XUV7OO, Astor, Creta and the City (I love sedans). The XUV7OO is too pricey for me now. The Astor has not-so-great ride quality. I'd love a Sedan, but my heart will sink each time I scrape the underside of the car. The only real option left is the Creta - it looks terrible (in my opinion). But I might have to live with it for the rest of the package it offers.

Re: MG Astor Review

Took a TD of Astor earlier today from the Moti Nagar outlet, New Delhi.
I had been following the thread since quite a while and must say it's a well developed car. I took a TD of Red Coloured Astor Top Model - Savvy.

My current drive is a Ciaz AT and have driven a City 4th Gen AT and in comparison to that the pick up is quite smooth. The refinement is upto City standards - City may be slightly better. The pick up is better in Astor and quite linear once the Turbo sets in.
The turning indicator and wiper etc follows earlier VW cars - so you have it in the opposite side vis-a-vis honda or Maruti which I think is a big miss.
In comparison to the City and Ciaz, the legroom for the driver seat is a bit less as you have the height adjuster for steering and number of things jutting out - I am 5-11 and close to a Ton for reference.
The sunroof is quite large and allows alot of sunlight inside the cabin - we didn't feel warm as such but it felt airy - test drove around 12 noon in Delhi. I think because of that the cabin seems larger than it actually is.
The back seat is for 4 people (can add upto a kid). The ciaz is much more wider it seems than the Astor - don't remember the actual dimensions, but it seemed that way.

The advisor mentioned that the top end would be priced close to 17L ex showroom (which would be the Savvy model); the sharp model with no ADAS would be probably be priced at 16L. As per him, the 1.5L CVT is also expected sometime in next 10 days for TD.

Re: MG Astor Review

The white on the Astor is a more milky shade when compared to the one on the ZS EV. Also the ZS has more ground clearance and is noticeably taller when parked next to the Astor. Makes it feel like a larger car overall.

Re: MG Astor Review

After taking test drive on the 1.3 turbo engine yesterday, took test drive of 1.5 CVT engine today. The 1.5 engine feels very pale against its counter part. It seems to lack power. During acceleration the engine noise becomes louder and it's seems the engine is demanding power buy not able to get it. Though the gear shift has no lag and is very smooth to drive. I feel 1.3 is the engine to go for. It has a very smooth and quick acceleration. Also the black beige interior looks very average as against the red and black interior. Though I personally feel that all black interior would look pretty elegant. I would definitely Recommend turbo variant

We went for a test drive of the Astor today and enquired about the zs ev.
My mom was completely sold and actually suggested moving to a different apartment which allows for a fast charger installation and getting the ZS EV.

Unfortunately, they have stopped selling the base line model(~22L OTR), only the top end (26L OTR) is available now.
Seems to me they are phasing this one out for the incoming 2022 ZS EV.

Re: MG Astor Review

Eagerly waiting for the price announcement. I had almost finalized S-Cross 1.5 alpha manual. With a more suvish design, rear ac-vents, bigger boot. MG Astor could be a better buy in the lower variants specially the 1.5 petrol manual if priced well.

Re: MG Astor Review

MG Astor base variant features Link.

Details of entire feature set are captured in the above link.

Most important aspect of a car is safety features. If this is offered for base variant, then it is impressive.

MG Astor base variant will come with dual airbags, ESC + HAS + ESS, all four disc brakes, rear parking sensors, speed sensing auto door lock, security alarm, ISOFIX child seat anchor, rear 3 point seatbelt, Impact sensing auto door unlock, engine immobilizer, LED HMSL (high mounted stop lamp), rear defogger, rear wiper and washer.

Sharp (O) feature comparison with Kushaq 1.5 Style DSG, Taigun GT+

Looking eagerly forward for the price reveal. This looks like a second blockbuster of the season.

Re: MG Astor Review

I test drove both CVT and AT variants of Astor today. Below are my observations from my short drives.

1.3 Turbo AT:
Awesome pickup. Couldn't test the engine to its full potential due to the kind of road and traffic. Gear shifts are smooth. Overtaking is easy. Didn't take much effort. Car was stable throughout. NVH levels are good.

Since we already have awesome review about this engine I thought of sharing real word driving experience.

Now shifting to 1.5 CVT:
I've read about the rubber band effect but for the very first time I'm feeling it. Gear shifts are very sluggish. Reminded me of my driving class days where I struggled releasing the clutch pedal. No I'm not exaggerating here and being very frank. Tigor's AMT was much better. If anyone is planning to buy an Astor I would request them to please avoid the 1.5 CVT combination. Even Manual mode doesn't help much. There is no fun driving this one. Will wait for the manual variant of the 1.5 engine and test drive it. Until then 1.3 Turbo AT is the one to go.

Some general observations about the car:
  • Steering is light. Forgot to test different steering modes. SA was busy explaining ADAS features and he also forgot to mention about steering modes
  • Blind spot monitoring worked perfectly. It will be helpful in real time. Couldn't test other ADAS features
  • I felt the suspension to be more stiff. It's not as comfortable as Creta. Uneven road surfaces are easily felt inside
  • Front seats are one size smaller than 1st gen Creta. But they are comfortable though
  • On activating indicator one can see corresponding side's visual in infotainment system's display

Comparison with Taigun:
  • Test drove the Taigun as well today - 1.0 AT Topline variant.
  • Both front and rear seats are more comfortable than Astor. But Astor's seats felt more premium
  • Rear legroom is more than Astor but shoulder room is significantly less
  • Astor's claimed Boot capacity is more but Taigun's boot has more depth and could hold more. Astor's boot is flat and more practical
  • Though Taigun 1.0L has less power than Astor's 1.3L, I felt the performance was similar. If there is a drag race between these two variants, end result will be a tie or Astor will win by a negligible margin
  • Ride is much superior in Taigun. No comparison here. Creta will come next to Taigun/Kushaq(Duster is not in my comparison)
  • Only driver side window has one touch function. But the SA told that other windows can also be coded for one touch functionality
  • Sunroof operation was not smooth. Astor's sunroof worked like a breeze. Taigun's exposed mechanical parts of Sunroof makes it more worse
  • Power folding operation of ORVMs makes squeaky noise. SA told me he will get it checked. But it doesn't look like a one off case. More evidence of cost cutting?
  • MID showed Average mileage as 8.5 kmpl on both Taigun and Astor. I didn't push hard both of them and even after the test drives mileage figures were same.

I totally agree with bhpian Turbokick's rating in post# 446. Except that I would replace Kushaq with Taigun.

Couple of things which I would like to add in that comparison -
Second row overall comfort:
Creta > Taigun > Astor

Audio Quality:
Astor = Taigun > Creta

Infotainment system(both look and feel):
Taigun > Creta > Astor

Verdict: After doing multiple test drives I felt our 11 year old humble 1.2L NA manual i20 to be much more satisfactory on my way back home

Apart from features these two cars didn't feel like an upgrade from i20. Interior space is less than gen 1 i20. Astor lacks under thigh support and Taigun is very narrow. Our i20 felt solid and better built than Taigun/Astor. I know I might sound insane but this is how felt after driving all three cars one after other. Creta somehow felt like a bigger car and a proper upgrade but Seltos's crash rating is the only concern which is holding me against Creta. Add to that economical diesel engine on offer. Will wait for Astor's price reveal though.

Re: MG Astor Review

Did a TD of 1.3 Petrol AT Astor 2 days ago and was waiting to write a review after getting a TD of Hector as well.

It's not for a petrol enthusiast at all. The 1.3 turbo engine is sluggish at best and doesn't seem to perform until the turbo kicks in. The TD car had done about 240 kms, and the SA had confirmed it's mechanically OK.

The car moves at a good speed after taking off the foot from the brake pedal and is tuned perfectly to take off in the city. Sedatly driving in the city would suit the characteristics of this car perfectly.

If you are driving in city like Bangalore where there is no scope of going beyond 40-50 km/hr, then the car fits in easily, as the turbo would not be needed and would not kick in as well. On the other hand if you are someone who drives in NCR, where distances are longer and you have toll roads, where you need to tap the power and drive between 60-80 overtaking slower vehicles, the car would dissapoint you for sure.

For getting Astor to gather up all the power, you'll need to floor the gas pedal and the turbo lag takes a good 3-4 seconds to give that power to the engine, and you can feel the car taking off with a jerk. The power transition to turbo is not linear at all and there is a huge gap in terms of power.

The steering is light but good enough for city drive. Suspension were good as well. Special mention for the camera view, which sucks big time. It's no where near HD and you can actually see the very pixelated video in the pic attached.

MG Astor Review-20211009_141850.jpg

I would not discuss the other features or looks of Astor as it has been discussed widely in this thread.

Exactly my thoughts, i drive a FL version of Gen1 i20
Asta 1.2lt Petrol Manual ( released circa 2012 ), driving the Astor and getting back to my car, i felt, my i20 was better built and spacious for a under 4mt car, even the width of the car felt larger than Astor in the Second Row, for a 4.2mt long, 1.8mt wide car, it felt small and not worth the price upgrade.

The pricing reveal today, can make or break the car purchase now, the more i look at the car with my rational mind.

I had raised this point few days back in this forum as well. I own Elite i20 2017 Dual tone Asta (P) model. Did 1K trip last week. While on trip I kept asking myself on how much difference will an upgrade to Astor make? Size - almost similar inside, Power - slightly better, Safety - Hopefully better with ADAS and 5 star rating of ZS. Nothing else right?!

Even if pricing is 17-18Lakhs on road, with XUV700 in 19.5-22.5Lakhs range and Hector also in 19.5-21Lakhs on road for top petrol variants, which car would really be a true upgrade from i20 - I'm not sure yet.

Will pricing of Astor really make that much difference to the feeling of not getting "worthy upgrade" against i20?

Re: MG Astor Review

Did they talk about the option pack (ADAS) pricing? It would be on top of the ex-showroom pricing I believe
