And it's never that difficult to make a car safety rating compliant, As such many other products of MSIL have pathetic safety ratings.

Probably that's how Gypsy has evolved into Jimny.
But Gypsy in it's original form still appeals.

At times, it appears that manufacturers wilfully kill a product to make way for the next generation.

1. Thanks. Yes it is a civilian Gypsy
2. For the Gypsy the 1.3 litre G13BB was perfectly adequate. But yes they would have had a winner if they had plonked the 1.6 Baleno G16BB engine in as many have done after-market. The Gypsy with this bigger engine is a different beast. But I would worry about ‘stopping power’.
3. Yes the Gypsy could have been factory fitted with the standard Koyo Power Steering from the WagonR and other Suzuki vehicles, again as many have done after-market. But from what Im told, it always leaks fluid. The AC in a Gypsy with the 1.3 litre engine would make it drop in performance and power just like the Esteem. Of course it is better than the MG410 and Maruti 1000 but still not as good as the Baleno 1.6.
4. The Gypsy was a product of its time. When safety wasnt a big deal and average speeds were lower and traffic much lesser. Contrary to what we may think, it is not as easy as that to ‘make’ an old car safety compliant. Remember, this is a 40 year old design.
5. The Jimny IS indeed, the modern, evolved and yet as capable new-generation of the Gypsy. You can see the picture attached of the evolution.
6. Yes in this case the manufacturer took many years to bring this generation to the market.

You can see a bunch of pictures attached of Gypsy memorabilia and history here. Starting with the humble Hope Star On and evolving to the present day.

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

Some colour play at work here.
I have dechromed the grill and painted four slots to flat black and one slot to red.
Our Jimny looks so much better now.

Procedure to remove the grill is very simple, adding a you tube link here.

(Just watch the first one minute)

Happy Jimnying.

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

I had the dealer install the front parking sensor official accessory last week and I am regretting the same. It randomly beeps for no particular reason on highways when I apply the brakes to slowdown. If it rains, then it continously beeps regardless of whether anything is in front each time you touch the break to the point I had given up driving it when it rains.

Has anyone else installed it? I can't imagine it not having some mute button. There is a switch at the back of the readout panel but clicking it does not seem to do anything. I'd recommend folks not to go for this accessory. I might open it up and cut away the buzzer to quiet it.

I took delivery of my "Jim" last week, and have done around 800km in 9 days. This is a report of my 1st impressions

Congratulations. I received my Jimny surprisingly/unexpectedly quick. In two weeks clocked 2000 kms, driving to Meghalaya and Arunachal and in my home state of Assam.

1. Narrow dimension works. In fact it’s mentioned on the manual too, like how it’s designed to be narrow. It served me well in the Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh.
2. Engine adequately powered. Just got to be busy with the gears, during steep climbs.
3. I once clocked 17 kmpl on nice highway without AC. But that was just once. Average I got around 14-15 kmpl. As of now it reads 13.9 kmpl.
4. To that I’ll add another thoughtful feature in the Jimny. The jadded front window sill designed to offer better view. Helped me immensely during sharp turns, especially while coming downhill on the narrow, but empty Mandala - Phudung road, made narrower by the overgrown roadside bushes, at this season.

5. One thing that needs a special mention is the Jimny’s surprisingly good suspension. I remember reading somewhere how on specs list the Jimny is lack lustre, but as a package, Suzuki knows a thing or two when it comes to light off-roaders. And the Jimny is a testimony to that. It’s comfortable, slightly faster than my SS80, got 5 front gears opposed to the four in Hirohito. Got plenty of airbags. I guess I am in safer hands.

I am happy with my Jimny too. Perhaps the only vehicle that could have continued the journey of my SS80 forward, both in design, proportions and a rugged off-roader. One thing that I recall noticing, was the hydraulic on the boot door. While it’s a nice touch no doubt, but it failed to hold the weight of the door, on inclines. A locking mechanism would have made sense.

Sharing a photo or two from my trips so far.

What happened? Did the boot door open by itself while driving uphill?

The hydraulic system is similar in your SS80 boot glass.

Dileep, the door won’t remain open when parked in an incline. Here is a photo for reference. Maruti Jimny Review-img_7281.jpeg

@hirohito:
How nice that you bought a Jimny. Going by your adventures, if anyone will use it the way it is meant to be used, it is yourself!
How are you liking the Jimny as compared to the SS80? In my opinion you have a lovely garage with the superb SS80 and the Jimny. In the old days (early/mid 1980’s) the garage one aspired to if one lived in the hills was one Gypsy and one SS80 both being the epitome of modern motoring then, but most of us (our Dads) invariably had one Ambassador or Fiat and one Mahindra CL550 or MM 540.

Thank you @Shankar.Balan. I feel the Jimny is connected to the SS80, in terms of design (angular and retro), efficient cabin space management, and a quirky boot and both relies on good power to weight ratio, instead of going for brute power. I’ve found the Jimny to be comfortable and just like the SS80, I kept feeling fresh even after driving for hours at a stretch.
I feel my humble garage is complete for now.

Jimny Idle stop start disabled

Its a Plug n play circuit that sits between the switch and its coupler. The chip on the circuit maintains the last state of the switch on engine start. I.e., if the idle-stop-start is OFF it will turn OFF the idle-stop-start at engine start so one does not have to remember to turn it off manually each time.

A difference between idle-stop-start in the Jimny and other Marutis is that in the Jimny the starter motor is used to start the engine, in other Marutis ISG alternator starts the engine when idle-stop-start is active. Jimny's alternator is not an ISG.

The starter motor engaging multiple times on a drive with its typical bendix action sound is mildly irritating and slow and does not offer a seamless start. Probably will shorten the life of that bendix also.

I did a full PDI before delivery, infact I had a choice between three Jimnys.
Please don't compromise and be ready to walk away.
Best wishes for your ownership.

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

With all things nice being said about the Jimny (and I’m a happy customer myself when it comes to product use), I find the customer experience of MSIL Nexa slightly disappointing - frustrating even.

To begin with, in a couple of interactions with their service stations (in this case, Rohan Motors, Noida), it has been my experience that they are completely under-equipped to attend to the Jimny for any technical corrections. This could be partly because it’s a brand new product and largely because it is the only 4x4, special purpose vehicle that has been long absent from their service bays. Over the years, MSIL’s service crew have grown ‘soft’ dealing with millions of generic vehicles, to the extent, they don’t have a clue about correcting steering alignment of a Jimny when it comes to that! Combine that with the extreme volumes of cars at a MSlL ASC at any given time of the day or week, the customer experience isn’t exactly ‘premium’, the NEXA tag non withstanding. Again, others may have had a better experience than me at a different NEXA ASC, but this is the state of affairs at most Noida dealerships.

Secondly, although their current official accessory list is more cosmetic than purposeful, availability of something as basic as luggage hooks is zero. They managed to sell me the cargo net though, and that’s one useless piece without hooks to string it from. I’ve tried multi-dealerships and everybody has the same answer - not available.

The Jimny is a premium product. It is a special purpose product as well. If MSIL feel that just selling and delivering these to the public is good enough, then they are woefully shortsighted. The need was to develop this niche by supplying meaningful Genuine Accessories both for the cosmetic minded as well as the real use minded.

I quite agree. These Maruti ‘Babus’ have zero idea about ‘Lifestyle’. Not one of them will be a Jimny customer.
The exact same ‘Malaise’ besets Mahindra. Coupled with this, their complacency and ‘accidie’ has resulted in such poor accessories, one simply cannot believe that an OEM can sign their name to them.
Despite good quality leadership at Mahindra, they don't have a clue about how important and lucrative the accessories department can be for them!
Both MSIL and M&M are Myopic and Stubborn in this regard.
