Other than some resemblance around the B pillar, this car has nothing in common with Yeti to be it's successor. Yeti was much bigger (4.3 meters in length), came with proper 4X4 and other off-road traits, had 2.0 litre 138 BHP diesel engine and was built like a tank.

Thanks for sharing this . Someone in our circle who is very interested in the Syros is going to be very happy seeing this news.

Glad Kia didn't skip it. After experiencing it on our Seltos, I can't imagine not having this as a standard feature in modern cars.

Re: Kia Syros Review

Having seen the teasers for this car, I definitely questioned what Kia has been upto. Given that the Sonet exists, and is also priced at the top of the sub 4m cars.

Looking at the package though- it makes a lot of sense. It's almost funny that they took a key weakness of the Sonet, made a brand new car to circumvent it, and will sell both to different buyers. Gotta give it to Kia India, they definitely are a masterclass case study for MBA students in the future.

Personally, I can't digest the looks. Especially coming from the pre-facelift Seltos (which I own), it's a downgrade to an unfathomable extent. However, the interiors are spectacular, with newer age tech than even the facelifted Seltos.

This IMO makes the Diesel variants of both, the Sonet and Seltos, positively irrelevant. The 1.5 Turbo petrol seems to be the sole differentiator of the Seltos over the Syros.

Kia definitely needs to get its suspension right for India though. No car except the Carnival has it comfortable for India. People sitting at the back of my pre facelift Seltos always wince at every rough patch of road, even when the tyre pressure is set at 32psi. I don't know Kia's obsession of going with larger wheels when they can't get the suspension right. Their cars are sportier, yes, but shouldn't be back-breaking.

Re: Kia Syros Review

Syros is an indication of the maturity / evolution of the market. There is today enough room for 10+ cars in sub4m space spanning not just body styles (sedan, hatch, crossovers) but also tastes (lifestyle vs do it all)

Guess the way to win in this market is by creating niches / new categories.

On a Syros specific note, this to me is the successor to the Honda Jazz spirit of clever engineering

Very interesting times lie ahead

The review says "sturdy build"...haven't driven the Syros and not sure if it matches the Yeti build quality, but it did come with a 110 bhp diesel I think and had both 4x2 and 4x4 options.

Syros takes forward/tries to ape the Yeti in design and space for sure even accounting for the additional 300m which would largely be for the boot.

Re: Kia Syros Review

The white Syros looks like a stormtrooper to me . Overall sounds like a good practicle car. Hopefully they follow the Mahindra/Tata lead and have given it a stable frame.

Re: Kia Syros Review

Fantastic review!

I still feel the Elevate CVT makes a lot more sense than the Syros turbo petrol DCT. Yes the Elevate seriously lacks on the features front but it's engine and gearbox combo is a lot more easier to live with.

Syros Diesel will of course be the preferred choice among many but the looming ban on diesels makes it a risky proposition to put one's money on it.

Re: Kia Syros Review

I like the review, as always a good well covered one. However, I think the safety ratings of the car have to be added mandatorily. If it's 4 star and above - pros. If it's below 4, then con and if the car doesn't have a safety rating yet, then definitely a con. I see that not being discussed in the Kia/Hyundai car reviews at all. And one line about the car - Sonet's loss is Syros' gain (or rather we'll have to wait and watch). It's a smaller Yeti for sure. I can't believe there are no rain sensing wipers. Do they deliberately miss them or they just forgot it in an otherwise feature loaded car?

Re: Kia Syros Review

The car's looks are extremely polarizing. The wheel arch cladding is a bit too big and the alloy wheel design is average at best. However, I guess it is a trend now to make polarizing designs, so that people talk and discuss about them a lot more, making them stay in the limelight for longer than a normal conventional design. We saw that with the XUV3XO and the Hyundai Verna. I believe it is akin to a celebrity's PR shenanigans. That being said, the rear seat is definitely the highlight here. Ventilation, sliding seats (take that, XUV700!), and crazy recline definitely makes it the best rear seat in the segment, as far as I can see. I just wished the design was better; like perhaps, the Scion XB

Re: Kia Syros Review

A very practical car with loads of useful features. I actually quite like the design, in fact, I would even say I prefer the looks compared to cars like fronx which gives a mash up vibe of lifted hatchbacks. It reminds me a lot of Honda Element, a very boxy but practical car.

Wonder why they didn't give rain sensing wipers when they threw in everything else. I can't think of a single other feature that is missing. One thing that I appreciate is the dashcam, assuming it is well integrated with the vehicle and not an aftermarket type fitment. Would comment Kia for providing lots of pratical and useful features like adjustable luggage space thanks to rear seat recline/move, rear seat ventilation, very practical storage options and excellent legroom. The loads of space liberated inside because of the design would make it trump most others in its segment.

If I was in the market for a sub 4m car, this would have been on top of my list provided they also have good crash rating. That is the only issue I find with it.

Re: Kia Syros Review

Syros Review - Great Review . Well written and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
The review states that car has good high speed straight line stability. Your comment on the handling department. How well the car handles at the hard corners as compared to Sonet and Seltos.

There are many cases where guessing games would not have ended well, e.g., Triber, Dzire, Amaze, Etios or Verna (and the other way around for the Carens retest). To this day, the review for the Alto cites the 0-star rating for the S-Presso, although the car ended up scoring 2 against even tougher criteria.

Also, Hyundai-Kia seem to now be hopping on the NCAP bandwagon even in other “developing markets” globally. Kia themselves had their first 5-star Latin NCAP result last year after a very consistent track record of 0-star results over the years.

For what it’s worth, carmakers don’t usually add such oddly specific things as passenger airbag disconnection switches and i-Size positions “just for thrills”, so I am fairly optimistic that they have at least designed the Syros keeping BNCAP/GNCAP in mind. I just hope they don’t prematurely make bold claims and eventually underdeliver, like they did with the Carens. That is simply lying to consumers.

Re: Kia Syros Review

This looks like a complete and practical package especially slightly elder people who want to buy something like a nexon, would definitely appreciate this car for the practicality it offers. I expect the mid variants to sell really well. My uncle wants to replace his Ciaz with a practical SUV, but he found the ingress of the Seltos to be slightly difficult for my aunt. Something like this would be a great fit for them.

With everything in place, my question to Kia is WHY WAS THIS CAR NOT LAUNCHED WITH THE 1.5L N/A PETROL ENGINE?

Now I know that the 1.5L would make the car expensive since it won't get the tax benefit, but then the cost of 1.0 Turbo vs 1.5 N/A may have brought the cost down and it would've made more sense to the target audience of the car I feel. But what a brilliant package otherwise. I hope the mid variants pricing is at 12.5L ex-showroom to really put the sales chart on fire. !!!

Re: Kia Syros Review

A quirky car with some interesting features that make it very practical. The rear seat slide to increase leg room along with recline and seat ventilation is such a masterstroke. Very practical features, and available in diesel too.

Skoda must be seeing the end of the road for Kylaq already.

Re: Kia Syros Review

For the life of me, I do not understand why and how Renault lets its spacious sub 4m Triber sit on the sidelines with a puny 71 bhp motor and lets Kia and others take away the accolades on space management. It is just lack of interest in India, because nothing else can be explained logically.
