Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

Real beauty in any direction you see.Timeless.

It must have been a proud feeling for both of you.

I remember the proud feeling my dad used to have while posing alongside the classic dodges, oldsmobiles that erstwhile army generals used. He was driver of General Thimaiya when retired( 1961). Those pictures are very close to my heart.

Your attire was awesome to say the least.

Your looks were better than any model walking the ramp anywhere these days if i may say so.

Keep posting & we would be glad to be nostalgic time & again.

Oh My God!!! Who is looking more handsome and well turned out - KPS or the Daimler

You seem to be having a lot of fun and the Maharaja seems more very pleased at having lost his grandfather's Daimler!!!

The car screams royalty all the way

With deep regret, KPS’s wife Smitha passed away yesterday after battling a long term illness. KPS had been a strength for her throughout and she had been a strong support to him during his various restoration journeys!

Please do pray for the family and grant them the strength to bear this sad loss!

Thank you Ajmat. Your thoughts and wishes gives me much strength. Also thank the other BHPian's who had me in their thoughts.

She will be missed immensely and I pray that she will rest in peace

She supported my passion to the hilt. Unfortunately her illness was such that she could not take a drive in the Daimler.

Seen here was probably the only time she actually sat in the car. She was instrumental in choosing the colour combination of the body and upholstery

I am really sorry to hear about your loss KPS Sir, please accept my deepest condolences. I was at the 21 Gun Salute rally yesterday and came across your car and I was telling my brother about how beautifully you had restored the car.

Please take care Sir and you and your family will be in our prayers.

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

My good friend and BHPian Srinand, took the car on my behalf to the 21 Gun Salute and followed it up with a tour of Rajasthan. I have requested Srinand to write an article and post pictures of the tour, where the car covered 2000+ kms without any major problems.

From Jaipur the car came to Bombay. BHPian Kasli was kind enough to allow the Daimler to be parked in his place, till I decided my next move. Bombay is the mecca for detailing and I was not going the miss any opportunity to update the car, as I strive to give my utmost respect to this wonderful car.

The front number plate was done in the old style

The lenses of the Dip Light was matched to the headlights
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-2.jpg

The gold lines were redone.
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-3.jpg

The thickness of the lines were reduced
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-4.jpg

The wood work was polished again to bring out the original grains
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-5.jpg

The roof was redone with material imported from UK.
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-6.jpg

Roof finished like original
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-7.jpg

With the extra cloth we temporarily did the rear side window curtain. My wife had suggested to do in deep purple, a royal colour
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-8.jpg

All the glass was etched with the logo, copied from the front windshield
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-9.jpg

The dome light switch was changed to the original type
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-10.jpg

Size of the fonts were reduced
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-11.jpg

The Advance/Retard was etched
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-12.jpg

Logo on the meter updated
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-13.jpg

Rear Carpet with the same material on the bottom part of the door
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-14.jpg

All the carpets were redone on the car
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-15.jpg

The screws on the woodwork were imported and changed
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-16.jpg

Rear number place was redone.
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-17.jpg

I was told the radiator cap on my car was not original. The cap on my car was a solid piece, beautifully machined and showed signs of age. Hence it was difficult for me to digest that this was not original. More research was done, and clearly the original one had flutes to match the radiator flutes!

I checked some of the old pictures on the car from the late 1950's and one could see that the original radiator cap probably had a flag staff drilled it through it and was probably replaced at some point.

Requested BHPian Bulldogji to lend me the radiator cap from his wonderful and priceless Dolphin DB18. He was very kind to not only take me to where the car was parked, he happily lent me the radiator cap, for me to replicate.

Both are shown for comparison
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-18.jpg

While one on the left looks bigger, the threading in bottom which screws on to the radiator was an exact match
Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon-19.jpg

The milled piece is shown for comparison

This has now been chromed and dispatched to Bangalore

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

Post restoration the car has done more than 6000 kms.

The last service was done about 3000 kms back, it was time for a major service. Further, I have planned for another trip to Rajasthan in Feb'24, hence it was good to have the car fully checked.

The work done in this service

As usual, the engine has been cleaned up and looks smashing! If I do not keep the engine clean, I get gently scolded by the restorer

KPS I have been following your car for long and must salute you for working on the minute of the minutes details. The etching on the glass is cherry on top. But the biggest thing for me is your engine bay- must appreciate the surgical cleanliness there. Its a good point for all of us to follow .

Lovely cars. But how are you all managing the aspect of feeding them with the correct petrol?

Good question as the new fuel is a problem. The ethonol cause problems for the fuel pump and carbs

Hence in storage we ensure that the fuel level is low. Sometimes we use a Wruth additive. Based on the expected usage, I fuel accordingly. I add 5 ml 2T for every 10 litres of fuel, as it lubricates the valves.

Thanks Sir.
Maybe you could consider this?
I use it occasionally as a ‘mix’ in my cars which are able to handle max E10 or less.
