Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

Some cool facts about our own Amby

First year on sale:
Production in India began in 1958.
What it’s based on: A 1956 Morris Oxford III, but the ’56 Oxford can trace its roots to the 1948 Oxford.
Where it’s built: In Uttarpara, India, near Calcutta. The Brits surrendered it in 1959.
Cost: About $9500.
Power: Four Isuzu engines are available: A 1.8-liter four-cylinder makes 71 horsepower; the same engine, converted to CNG, achieves 54; and there are two diesels—a 50-hp, 2.0-liter four and an entry-level 1.5-liter with 36 ponies.
Why it’s special: The Oxford, upon which the Ambassador is based, was designed by Alec Issigonis, father of the Mini. More important, the Ambassador is the country’s real Model T, no disrespect to the Tata Nano.

This Amby is 1970 or earlier model because this has the Mark II logo in the front fenders. In 1971 the logo got shifted to the boot lid. The instrument cluster is a modified one. From some of the meters with the white needles it appears that it is a pre 1969- post 1967 car.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

Today at office parking, parked next to a neat black 2000dsz Ambassador classic. It has the original factory paint and was pleasantly surprised to see the intercooler tucked in the place, where it's normally modded to fix the number plate.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

A real black beauty from the mid 1960's spotted in Kolkata just a few days back. In Kolkata most old Ambassadors preserve the old registrations as will be evident in my later posts, but the body is changed over to a new one probably due to the rusting and decay problems. But this one is an exception. It is rare to sight such wonderful Ambassadors in Kolkata these days. Hats off to the owner's perseverance to keep the beauty in this condition.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

^^^ Fantastic car, every inch an original. The only exception being those reversing lights. Another period accessory is that venetian blind curtain in the rear; Even preserving that is a task in itself.
Kudos for spotting such gems.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

I feel sourcing the steel beading for the front and rear windscreens is becoming tougher by the day.
Also, was the front mounted antenna an original accessory?

True, the steel beading is rare. Only cars that have been scrapped can bequeath such a spare for the other cars.
The antenna was in vogue in the 1950's, 60's and even 70's. It would be available with the car radio as an aftermarket fitment.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

A 1978 Ambassador Mark 3 at Kolkata, that retains only its old number plate. It has a 1500 DSL powerplant and has been perhaps fitted with a new bodyshell.

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

On 14-07-2013 "Weltspiegel" a German news program aired one on Ambassador cars named a Indien - Die Liebe zum Ambassador with the indian Taxi driver Jaswant Singh and his "Amby"
The report also contains some interesting insights of the Hindustan Motors HM production plant in Calcutta, India
Saw in you tube in this link:

Re: Landmaster And Ambassador Picture Gallery

A friend spotted this in Pune the other day. Probably a 60-61 model, and those cool rare extra trims. And other embellishments
