Sorry Shyam I confused you with dual tone what I meant was cream on rims. I apologise, I was imagining your car with thin white wall tyres with cream colour while commenting this. It was a magic the registration turning from AP to CAN, I wish we could retain that way which I know can't be possible. I am looking forward to see your car turning into a bride soon Shyam.

OK, further update- finally the much-awaited paint-job is completed and CAN finally has a new look!! 'will look even better once the rubbing/polishing is done!

WARNING: Loads of pics.!! Not for gradual downloads!

Here are the pics. during and after the painting process. The rear number has been left on as the black would form a base coat for the current white background. How I wish even more I could retain the CAN regn.!

Also got yet another OHH-REE-GEE-NAL item I ordered on ebay, just as I was leaving from home today- a Herald choke cable!!

Now just need the original H'light switch and will be ready to fit an all-original dash onto CAN!

Also today the door glass seals had been fitted and the glass all back in place. I dont know which car's these belong to though, but they seem to fit quite neat.

Next is to get the rims painted- to the correct off-white.

She's going to blaze the roads man.. the colour's coming out terrific !
Can't wait to see the wheel rims painted off white.

While you did speak about an oh-ree-G-nal dash, one quick question: How's the condition of the steering wheel ? Are you going to retain the rexine cover, or remove it to get that "oh-so-slim" look to the 'wheel ?
Also, any reliable way to restore a bakelite steering wheel to a nice finish ??

Thanks ravi!

Yes, I do intend to take off the cover, and also a rexine cover underneath it, but only after she's done and home. Right now it's serving a useful purpose in protecting the wheel from smudges etc!

Bakelite steering wheel, I'm afraid I dont know of any specific products that we have here to restore them- I need to do the same for the levers of my LD as well. But whatever you do, DONT use thinner!

Hi Shyam the best way to restore bakelite, is first give it a good clean with soap and water. Then one can buff and polish the surface with nice neutral shoe polish or good quality wax. Simple but it works. I restored my whole Mercedes interiors (everything is bakelite) with this method.

The car is looking superb, I must say the more I see your thread the more i want a Mark I Herald

As Mole said "the more I look at this thread I feel I should have a Herald" excatly sir that is the fell I excatly have, may be all who visit this thread would have. Shyam was a well deserving candidate for this car and its a well deserved car for him. I remember he being following a car of his dream but still standing unlucky not because of his efforts but just because of the other parties greed, I wish and am sure oneday he will get it.

Reading all these amazing restoration threads - (2 by Stanher, 1 by Pavan kadam) make me for having sold our Standard herald for a "newer car" in 1988! the newer car being the Premier Padmini! But i guess thats the way life is.
Will try to look for our old family 'Stanher' and buy her back if possible! The last I heard and had seen her was about 8 years ago in a by-lane close to where I lived.

I cleaned the Bakelite knobs for my fiat which I got from scrap yard with a rubbing polish and then by liquid wax, they came our good. rubbing polish removes light scratches.

Sad indeed to hear about your Herald, kevin! But yes, that was the trend back then.

I hope she's still around- do you recall the number btw? karlosdeville might be knowing of it, he used to send me loads of pics. of Heralds in Pune back in the day when there were still a number of them (read 7-8 years ago!)

Anyways, continuing further, CAN's finally near about done to being put back together. All the fittings post the touch-up work are in place, except for the bootlid badge, which I intend to fit only after the rubbing/polishing is done.

But, I really love the way she looks now!! And also glad I got to spend a good couple of hours with CAN, having taken the optional holiday today! I really missed seeing her for the last 3 days because of my new shift- 6am-3pm. Although the log-out time is early enough, it takes about 2 hrs before I'm home and I feel too tired/busy with other stuff to come here!
Ironically, this garage at Secunderabad is just on my way home! But getting down on the way isnt convenient when I have to finally go home. Also hesitant to carry a camera while I go to work lest it causes unwanted attention.

Luckily I have off on Fri and Sat so hope to get all the work done by the weekend! I want to, as much as possible, have her taken home in my presence!

Anyways, door work is all done, the door handles, pads etc. all in place, interior nearly tidied up. Now only the rims are left to be repainted- in the original off-white colour I've finally decided. for which, purpose, I had the tyres that are whitewalls taken off 3 of the rims, to avoid them getting in the way of the paint.

A couple of the rims have little rust growing inside that will be sanded and zinc-primered.

Now I thought I had a nice whitewall on the stepney rim that'd make my set of 4 complete....only to notice on the other side this tear in the tyre. I was told it happened probably because there was a puncture and the car ran for some time before being stopped. So this makes the tyre pratically useless, except as a stepney- anyone could tell if it is true (I hope not!!)??

Shyam bhai the car has turned out pretty well. I hope that the rubbing & polishing job will make the newly painted surface merge into the other non painted portion of the car. Though sad to hear about the WW tyre. The tyre is completely useless. Please do not use
it even as a stepney. Its a risky affair to drive even half a km with such condition tyre.

Thanks sagar! The painting of the rims is to happen tomorrow...so should be fun to watch once done!
And yes, about the tyre...sad indeed, but safety is even more important!
So now my hunt for WW tyres goes on!

Sorry for the silence here but 'been really too tired in the later part of the day to post updates!

Anyways, managed to get quite some work done on Monday- all 5 rims of the car are now repainted...in the original cream!

Luckily I was around when he started the paint job and noticed that the shade bought wasnt really the actual ivoryish cream colour!!

I managed to get him stop at that and then he brought some butter yellow paint that he mixed in the off-white, which gave a more accurate shade!

'got the tubes and tyres back on the same day. I'm told the wheels are all now fitted onto the car.

Meanwhile, also intending to give the front parking lights a makeover- the assemblies, especially the left one, are quite rusty and would need a complete rejuvenation. I had the idea of getting them zinc-plated but was told the chemical process'd harm the bulb holders inside so was suggested to paint them silver on the outside instead.
I do have new covers/lenses to fit on though.

Also finally replaced the front headlight with an OE "MADE IN ENGLAND" lucas one!

Which also reminds me of something among a few goodies of Heralds I got just yesterday (bought from ebay UK)- an OHH REE GEE NAL ignition switch with key! Only the key doesnt want to leave the barrel!!

A couple of things unfortunately look like they'll have to be postponed, like the making of the original dashboard. In any case, I now dont want the car sitting in the garage gathering dust too long- it has been in there for longer than expected anyways.

I reckon CAN would be ready to finally come home in the next couple of days- only bummer is it isnt my off-day until Sunday! I could be a bit more relaxed with more time and plan better than on a working day! :(
