The logo on the hub cap makes me think it is a Chevrolet (the experts can chime in).

The white striping along the mudguard edges indicate the photo was taken during WWII (1939 - 1945)

Hyderabad nobility. Wasif had earlier shared a lovely shot of all their cars lined up, which included a 4 door clipper, 1946/47.

as Karl said Hyderabad nobility

Quote:
Paigah is a family in the senior aristocracy of Hyderabad State. Under the British Raj they tended to be richer than the average Indian Nawab/Maharaja,[citation needed] and each maintained his own court, his own extraordinary palaces, and his own three or four thousand-strong private army.[citation needed]

Bashir Bagh Palace belonged to Sir Asman Jah, a Paigah noble and Prime Minister of Hyderabad (1887–1893).

Sir Vicar-ul-Umra, the Paigah noble and the prime minister of Hyderabad state (1893 to 1901), in 1897-98 presented Falaknuma palace to the sixth Nizam, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan as Nazar (offering).

GRO48 is indeed correct, thanks. I had believed it is the Dharbanga PIII, chassis 3AZ178 (the 4 doors should have alerted me!).

As far as I am able to remember - and this is having to go back to the early '50s - the '47 Packard Clipper had a break in the visual line (in profile) from roof to boot (trunk).

The car pictured is a pure "fastback" with the roof line unbroken in this way. This leads me to think that it might be a Nash Ambassador of the same period.

Oops!

I've done some research (which I should have done before!) and accept that my memory is faulty here. I agree with kasli, I too think it a Clipper.

Bit surprised that I should have made this mistake as I have good reason to remember the model; I lost a fingernail when the straight-eight cylinder head decided to "unjam" itself from the studs on which I had jammed it whilst I moved to the other side of the engine - just as I stuck my hand underneath! Hated sidevalves!
