Have the Airbags been deployed?
I cannot see the bags hanging, especially in this quoted picture!

There was a similar incident in Kolkata last year, where a Tollywood celeb rammed his Corolla Altis into the street divider, spun, and crashed leading to the death of his co-passenger. The car was a total loss case, but yet the airbags hadn't deployed upon impact. Toyota shrugged off the case then giving some nonsensical logic.

As per news reports, the driver and passenger were not wearing seat belts.
The gentleman was flung out of the vehicle during the accident leading many to believe that seat belts were not used.
I would guess this is the reason the airbags did not deploy.

Another reminder to belt up whenever you drive.

One more thing mentioned is:

This is quite valid, but may soon 'become' the primary cause of the accident with the speed and seatbelt slowly disappearing from news articles.
My father and 3 of his colleagues met with an accident at this exact same spot and direction of travel around 16 years ago. The road then was undivided but still wide enough. The slight right hand curve came as a surprise to my dad's friend who was driving, even though they had been travelling the same road twice a day since the 1990s (that's more that 10 years till the day of the accident).

The road in now pretty wide and well divided, but that gentle curve can catch you by surprise even if you a regular to the route.

Coincidentally, when my dad's friend missed the curve, another colleague seated at the back alerted the driver suddenly, causing him to over correct thereby swerving to the other side of the undivided road. The car flipped 3 times before coming to rest at the bund to the right side of the road. I read in one of the news article that a similar alert from someone in the back caused Mr. Harikrishna to over correct driving directly into the divider.

My dad required a plastic surgery to his left hand due to the accident, but apart from this, everyone came out relatively unscathed. None were wearing seatbelts and the car in question was our 1993 Maruti 800 which was being driven at about 80kmph when the incident occurred.

Two major differences between the two incidents. One being the speed (almost twice, therefore more than 4 times the energy, not considering weight difference), other being the introduction of the divider, which caused the Fortuner to take off into the air causing more damage in the process.

It was a feeling of deja vu.

That's how they roll in Gujrat bro. I've seen it. Also in many other small towns where people want maximum bang for their buck. Even if it means how many sit in a car at a given point of time. Why to waste all that air space, no?

Apparently people like these don't subscribe to the "seating capacity" idea. Or safety guidelines or other such "educated crap". Airbags are for the dandy "westerners". Get the drift?

If you go back some pages and check out some earlier Baleno mishaps, it features identical scenarios with about 8-9 people (if I can remember right) smashing themselves up in the car. And ending up the same way. They're pretty chilled out about it, apparently, because it's an everyday thing there. Just my two cents.

BHPian Sumitsinha0280 crashed this morning. All I know is that he is safe. The car is most likely a goner. More details awaited.

He was overtaking a truck, which kissed his left rear quarter panel and the next thing he remembers, is that he is neck deep in a puddle. The left side is gone, interiors are spoilt.

Thankfully he was belted and ended up without a scratch.

I couldn't speak to him but good to know that he's safe. Did the car turn turtle due to accident or vandalism on spot made it so?

Now since he's safe, I think that car is not yet a total loss, at least from the pictures. The pillars & the roof on the LHS don't look bad from what we can see in the picture.

His car probably touched the truck, flipped and landed in the field. Left side is completely damaged, and the interiors are spoilt too. Shell is intact, thankfully. I'll be reaching the spot by evening.

Shashi

This is with a temp registration plate... High chance is not insured yet. I am guessing repairs would cost as much as a small hatchback.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Witnessed a bad accident this morning near Hoskote on Bangalore - Kolar highway. We were only a few seconds behind this car. The school bus from opposite lane tried a U-Turn and the car seems to have spotted it late. Driver was belted and had only leg injuries, but the front passenger was badly injured and bleeding all over his face and head. The rear passengers too sustained various levels of injuries. We left the place after they were taken in an ambulance. I pray all of them recovers soon especially the front passenger. Another classic example of how a seat belt could have helped. See the damage on the passenger windshield.

The bus driver fled the spot. Look at how the median is removed to make space for U-Turn at the place.

Bad day for the Ritz; two totalled in one day.

Lucky that the occupants survived.

We may have good brakes, good tyres, good safety features but end of the day, if there is poor road discipline, everything comes to nought.

I drive a small portion of NH48 everyday and am shocked to see trucks parked on the left lane on some of the bridges everyday; some on the up incline and some just after the up. A car can barely make out that this vehicle is standstill, as it looks like moving slow. Approx 20kmph faster, and the car can see red in such cases.

I lost a friend, driving a Verna in 2009, to one such obstacle.
