Thanks Riju, my last two visits were in 2005 and 1996. I lived there between 1979-82.

road conditions to coorg

hi RJSTYLES,

When did you visit Coorg by the route you mention? I last drove down that route last year in May and they were doing some major roadworks at that time. Would have expected that to be over by now.

We are planning to drive that way in the first week of September. Please advice.

regards
Sandeep

p.s: I do not have an SUV; but a sedan with poor ground clearance.

Anyone traveling to coorg, don't even think of doing this route(Mysore--Hunsur-- PiriyaPatna--KushalNagar--Madikeri).

The roads are bad for about 40 odd kms. Cross Hunsur and then its a battle field which has had its share of the rain fury.

Car is bound to take a sound beating if you choose to do this route.

Heck go to Coorg now , its raining non-stop. No jeep or 4x4 will suffice for adventure and the adrenaline rush.

Rivers and streams are running full in and around Napoklu and Bhagmandala.
Absolute mayhem with landslides everywhere.

Take the alternate route via Gonikoppal--Virajpet to reach coorg.
Plan your trips accordingly and trek now, leeches are in plenty.

Sandeep the best route as of now would be Bangalore--Mysore--Hunsur--Gonikoppal--Virajpet-- Madikeri .

I did a trip a few weeks back and the kushalnagar route is pretty bad.Better avoided.

edit : Make sure you watch out for the deviation towards Gonikoppal after Hunsur. People generally tend to miss it.

Roy,
Instead of
Blr to Coorg route: Blr - Chanarayanpatna - Holenarsipur - Arkalgud - Bettadpur - Kushalnagar - Madikeri

Take

1.Blr to Coorg route: Blr - Chanarayanpatna - Holenarsipur - Arkalgud - Shaniwarsanthe - Madikeri

Road is decent all along except for rough patches around between
Holenarsipur - Arkalgud.

OR

2.You have option of taking Blr- C.patna -Hassan Arlkalgud and so on..

If you are visiting Mercara don't forget to visit talacavery.

On your return journey you can go to Mercara-> Kushal nagar --> Hunsur -> Mysore.
but the stretch between Kushal Nagar and Hunsur is going to be bumpy as road work is going on.. I'm not sure if its complete now.
I'm out of india for 6 months Now.

But on these roads take my advise and take a bigger vehicle if possible all will be good.
Reason: I studied near kushalnagar and I'm from Hassan and i visit these places often when i'm in india.

Luke:

Check out my travelogue to Coorg - did that trip between 13th & 16th August 2007.

Accent can go on the roads. But be careful on single lane roads, where the oncoming vehicle will push you to the non-existent shoulders.

Glad to find this thread. We are planning a trip to Coorg on the coming Saturday, and this is what we have in mind.

Cars involved : Alto, Ikon Flair.
Route info which i gathered from this thread : Bangalore--Mysore--Hunsur--Gonikoppa--Virajpet-- Madikeri
Time : Plan on starting on Saturday early morning, and get back by late night on Sunday. My friend has arranged for a homestay at Kushalnagar. From the route mentioned above, how do i get to Kushalnagar?

Other queries :
1.) Best time to start?
2.) Approximate time it would take us to reach there with very few stops along the way?
3.) Current road condition along the route mentioned above?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. : Riju, looks like your a regular here, going by this thread. Abhi, Samurai and the others too, please pitch in.

Benny if KushalNagar is your destination do this route
Bangy--Mysore--Hunsur--Piriyapatna--KushalNagar.

Dont deviate from Hunsur towards Gonikoppal.

Since you driving on a saturday, my advice is to start off early atleast by 6am. Mysore road resembles our city road with traffic on saturday mornings. So make sure you start early, else you will need 3 hrs to do bangy mysore.

Once you cross Srirangapatna and on entering Mysore limits, watch out for the ring road.

Take a right on the ring road and follow the road till you reach Bannimantap.
Ask anyone from there how to reach Hunsur Road, else follow the sign boards.

Try to stop around Bilikere, the road is simply awesome and so is the scenary.
Only bad stretch would be before Bilikere and the stetch when you reach KushalNagar.I think repair work should have been completed by now.

The roads around KushalNagar is pretty much as is in the picture.

Abi' can confirm coz he did a trip a few days back.

Enjoy your drive and drive safe.
