The reason I mentioned route 2 is because you get more greenery and its more scenic. Looking at the NH4 option:

- You already said you are familiar with route till Hubli.
- Now you need to take the excellent NH4 either till Chitradurga or Haaveri, from where you divert to Coorg. (CK/Haasan). Nh13 option is pathetic tilll Shimoga.
- Again Haasan-Gorur-Arkalgud section is rough.
- If the last section is going to remain common, you might as well come via NH17 and enjoy the western ghats.

Re: Information on Coorg route

@ampere,

Many Thanks for your inputs. Will take the NH17 route as you suggested.

Panaji-Honavar-Tarikere-Hassan-Arkalgud-Somvarpet-Madikeri. This way I stick to NH17 & NH 206 for majority of the journey.

One more piece of info that would be useful would be places to tank up, for both passengers & vehicle :-) along this route..

Hunsur Road is 4L only for a stretch, I think upto the junction of Hassan Road (about 16Kms from Mysore). From there till Kushalnagar is a very good 2L (similar to Hassan - Belur) with shoulders and lane markings. Kushalnagar - Madikeri is also a good 2L but w/out the lane markings. Last KM to Madikeri is a WIP.

Thanks for correcting me. I thought it was 4L all the way. Sorry for that.
But yes the road is very nice and super-smooth.

Oh yes I was also just looking through Google Earth and found it to be a 2 Lane.
Anyway, decent 2L is also fun to drive!

Re: Information on Coorg route

Though two lane, it is an excellent stretch through out till Kushal nagar after which it is "decent". However, near the towns of Kushalnagar and Piriyapatna the road is not that great.

Also, once you approach Madikeri, there will be lot of pot-holes.

Not much because of the closure of the road b/w Madikeri and Sullia.

Re: Information on Coorg route

Hi All,

Just a quick review of my trip from Bangalore-Madikeri on Jan 22 weekend.

We started from Bangalore on Jan 21st by 1.30pm instead of morning and after a lunch break at Hotel Nandhini somewhere after Bidadi and before Ramanagara, we cruised on the Mysore expressway with very less traffic. Just after Srirangapatna, contemplated a little on whether to take the by-pass and then finally decided to try it, as I wanted to avoid back-home traffic in Mysore in the evening. The roads were not good, but then it was manageable on the Corolla. We then had a break at Cafe Coorg(an interesting replica of CCD, even thought it belonged to the same group, but was surprised to find out that they are not! COPY CATS!) on the Hunsur by-pass at around 5pm and reached Club Mahindra Madikeri at 7pm.

The stay was quite comfortable and we did not venture out during the entire stay. The bandh on the 22nd, Saturday, also added to the cause.

We started back to Bangalore on 23rd afternoon by 1pm and stopped for lunch at Cafe Coorg at 3.30pm and then proceeded to Bangalore. The traffic was heavy this time owing to Sunday and we managed to reach home by 8pm. Overall it was a very relaxed trip and even the drive was very comfortable as I did not push too hard.

Road Conditions:
Bangalore-Mysore Expressway: Good as usual
Mysore by-pass to join Hunsur Road from Srirangapatna: Bad but doable
Mysore-Hunsur: 4Laned for most of the stretch, rest is good 2Lane
Hunsur-Madikeri: Good 2Lane, gets bad after Suntikoppa on the ghat section for almost 10kms.

Re: Information on Coorg route

I did a day trip from Mysore to Madikeri on 23rd Jan. Like slakhs has said, the last km or two before you enter Madikeri is WIP. Expect a lot of dust and gravel on this stretch (so roll up the windows). No significantly bad stretches of road to report on the remainder of this route.

Re: Information on Coorg route

The road closer to Mysore is also under construction(hardly 1 to 2 kms of bad stretch), so its a bit dusty. And as Arka said, the road near Madikeri is also bad. The rest is a bliss to drive on.
