Coorg is a region and not a town/place. Assuming you meant Madikeri, the dist headquarters of Coorg, this is the update (from my cousin who stays in Sulya):

Mangalore-Puttur: Decent roads
Puttur-Sulya: Repair work in progress, but manageable
Sulya-Madikeri: Road still remains closed.

To reach Madikeri, you should take either:
1. Mangalore-Kasargod-Talacauvery-Madikeri OR
2. Mangalore-Kukke-Somwarpet-Madikeri

Re: Information on Coorg route

Planning to visit Madikere from 10th to 12 th April 11.

The tentative plan is as below

09.04.11 night - Leave Chennai by train to Mysore

10.04.11 - Refresh at Mysore, leave for Madikere by cab.

Is it advisable to visit the spots near Kushalnagar like Nisargadhama/Dhubare/ Tibertian golden temple on the way to Madikere.

Check in to the hotel ( Mayura Valley view) in the evening

11.04.11 Visit Talakaveri , other places of interest near Madikere

12.04.11 Sight seeing near by places. Leave by 1 pm, reach Mysore, visit Brindavan gardens. Leave for Chennai by train

Is the plan OK? Please suggest if any change is required. Also I need details about reliable travel agency to hire a vehicle from Mysore (Innova / Qualis / Tavera)

Thanks

Re: Information on Coorg route

I am posting here just because I had been to Coorg recently.

From Bangalore, roads upto suntikoppa is BEAUTIFUL! And I mean it. Till Mysore, it's normal.

From Mysore to Hunsur it is 4 lane(part of the way) and dual carraigeway rest of the way.

From Hunsur, the roads are really good and most of it is newly laid. The tarmac is jet black and the visibility is also really good. There are curves as you near Suntikoppa and Madikeri, but those curves are fantastic to drive through.

From Suntikoppa to Madikeri, the roads are good but the last 4-5 kms before Madikeri roads are still being worked on. That stretch is the only thing you will need to worry about.

whats the current condition of the Hunsur Bye pass?
also while it is superb that they've cleaned up the Madikeri approach, what's the latest status on the Virajpet approach? Any news?

Mysore-Virajpet was horrrrrrible when we drove just before last Christmas. Made a mistake in choosing that route
It is highly improbable that the section is repaired by now!

Re: Information on Coorg route

I am planning to drive down to Coorg (in my i20) somewhere in the middle of July and have enquired about a homestay near Virajpet.I would like to travel to TalaCauvery and surrounding areas. Can anyone let me know how the conditions of the roads are and as to what could be the possible routes i could take?
Thanks in advance.

Had been to Talacauvery this weekend. The road from Madikeri till the junction towards Mangalore is bad. The left towards Bhagmadala from this junction is in very good condition. Only a few rough patches in between. Mostly good all the way till Talacauvery. Raining heavily all the time. The river at Bhagmandala was almost overflowing onto the road near the parking spot at the temple.

Re: Information on Coorg route

wanted to know if the roads have been opened for traffic on Madikeri-Mangalore section? Has any one traveled on these roads recently? I am planning to go to Udupi on 29th evening and I am aware that the Sakleshpura section is getting worse by the day. I normally use the Madikeri route as an alternative.

Re: Information on Coorg route

A bit more updates :

Madikeri - Bettageri : Not smooth, but manageable ( oh the usual roads - not changed much ). Some bad stretches.

Bettageri - Napoklu - Kakkabe : Many stretches *very* bad. Fortunately, the distance is short.

Kakkabe - Cheyyandane - Virajapet : Much better than above, but has it's share of small bad stretches

Virajapet - Ammatthi - Siddapura - Dubare Cross/Nanjarayapattana - Guddehosur : Also has some bad stretches, but no major concerns.

@vinboy : Traffic on this route has been open since Apr/May. A lot of buses ply currently on the Mysore - Mangalore/Dharmasthala route via Sampaje. However the last I went, broadening work was still in progress although the crashed portions appeared completely repaired.

Does anyone know if the Maani -> Puttur stretch of work is complete ?

I had traveled from Mani to Puttur recently and the road work is far from completion! The work has been halted I guess and the road is a mess! I even wrote a mail to Ms. Shoba Karandalage requesting her to do a little bit of work for the people of her town! As expected I have not received any response!

Guys,
Any update on the road condition between Madikeri to Mangalore. Is it open?
I will be driving to Mangalore in the second week of December in my Esteem.
